Hero Virtual Tabletop > Progress

Recommended Posts

For folks looking for an alternative to maps and miniatures for there super hero RPG battles, have a look at what I have been putting together. The following are screen shots of an app that takes the headless version of City Of Heroes, called Icon, and extends it with some functionality to manage fully animated an interactive miniatures on a 3d desktop.

After a couple of months of toil, thought I would show what is starting to be some pretty cool features to extend Icon for machima, role playing games, etc...

Application places a tabletop widget to the side of the desktop

the character explorer allows creating nested crowds of characters that can be linked, cloned and moved like windows explorer.

Single characters or entire crowds can be pasted into an active roster. Multiple characters in the roster can be spawned, locations can be saved, etc with a single command.

Each Character can be given multiple identities, Models or Costumes can be browsed, filtered, and previewed. Identites can activate an animated ability on load

Characters can be associated with multiple animated abilities. A UI provides for associated abilities with a hierarchical structure of FX, movs, and sound, all browseable, with realtime previewing.

Multiple Characters can be activated at a time which causes the active widget to display, active character can be moved, and abilities can be fired from the widget.

Once i get attacks, movements, and scenes done the "desktop" will be done, than Ill move to integrating the hero system RPG ruleset, so all mechanics, knockback, character build are part of the application.

Anyone interested in the application let me know, probably a month away for the first release

Trying to get this to work. I have Tequila downloaded, but it can't find the file it needs on Dropbox.

Did you try the links at the bottom of the page? I just attempted and it works fine. If you are still having trouble please post on the cog thread and we will be happy to support you through it.

Apologies I have not been very active on this thread.

Yes this program did originally interface with Hero Combat Simulator, the current version does not, as I wanted to really focus on getting the tabletop pieces right, and I am happy to say it is almost there! It is a really neat tool along side any PNP RPG supers game. I think I need about a month to kill all the bugs then I'll upload a link. After that I need to figure how to integrate with champions.

Options include

  • coding hero system directly in the application, I have about 80% of the business logic coded, but am running out of steam, hero system is a beast!
  • integrating to HCS, i love HCS but there are crazy bugs, and the code is nigh indecipherable,  still I may take a stab at it
  • integrating with Hero Combat Manager, to be honest I didn't like the feature set as much as HCS, but I am taking a second look as I am sure it is alot more stable than HCS

If you want a beta just let me know here...

We should talk if you are somehow thinking about integrating with HCM.

I took a look at HCM, and HCS, and am taking a second shot at integrating with HCS, as I'm able to (finally) get my head around enough of the code to integrate with it and fix various bugs. I am making a lot of progress, and should have a working integration, that covers attacks and character activations in about a month.

Ill drop rip a line when it's done.

I didn't write HCS so I have no concerns about how you use it.

On the other hand I created HCM and I do care about who wants to integrate with it.

You guys probably already know this, but you can buy the HeroDesigner code from the store. That might help you with the mechanics and code, but since it is on the character creation side rather than the combat, maybe not? Just mentioning it because I saw it the other day and wondered who might be interested in it.

Yes,  I downloaded the source code, which could be interesting to integrate character creation, but for now happy to directly integrate with HCS, and use HCM directly to create the characters...

HD - Hero Designer to create characters

HCS - Hero Combat Simulator ... No clue who wrote it or how it is maintained

HCM - Hero Combat Manager - uses exported character data from HD to manage a combat.  You can't create characters with HCM.  Those features will never be available in HCM, that is what HD is for.

HCM which I wrote and is sold here does not have source code available to be purchased.  Any attempt to integrate with another product will need to be worked out with me.
