Virtual Surfaces

IndianaJoe3

Question

Does AoE: Surface need to use a physical surface, or can it use a well-defined virtual surface (a doorway, a 2m radius hemisphere around the target, etc)?

(I realize that is similar to Cage from APG1, but that seems to require an enclosure in a way that a virtual surface would not.)

Ordinarily Area Of Effect (Surface) requires a specific, physical surface (such as a person’s skin, or a wall). But with the GM’s permission, a character could use Surface to cover some sort of specific, well-defined surface-like space, such as an open doorway or a corridor from wall to wall and floor to ceiling. In effect this creates a millimeter-thin “plane of force” that affects anyone who passes through it (to cover a thicker area, use the Line form of Area Of Effect).

In your example, I'm not sure if I personally would allow "2m radius hemisphere around the target" as a valid use of this rule. For that I'd require AoE: Cage.
