STAR TREK: Discovery

A video is available with a glimpse of the new ship design--it owes a debt to Ralph McQuarrie's design for the proposed sequel series back in the Seventies, except the delta-shaped secondary hull doesn't overwhelm the primary saucer hull the way it did in McQuarrie's art.

I like the name Discovery.  Perhaps we can have her sister ships named Challenger, Endeavour, Columbia and Atlantis.  That would be a welcome tribute, I think.

I will boldly go with this show.  You don't have to join me, but it would be nice if you did.

If you look at extant Trek rather than McQarrie's design, it looks like A Klingon D7 back (triangular and lowered nacelles)  and Fed Saucer. The music got decidedly drum based and Klingonish when that part of the ship came into view. I'm cool with that.

I just want to know what era/timeline it's going to be in. Visually it looks Pre-TNG. Maybe even pre-TOS.

I don't get that station, but I'm sure I;ll find them somewhere to watch.

CBS All Access is an online service. If you're outside of the US, Netflix will be streaming the episodes after they air.

NCC-1031, so I'm guessing pre-TOS. Still an incomprehensibly ugly ship though. It's even uglier than the Ent-D, and that's saying something.

Glad I am not the only one that thinks the ship is uglier than splattered barf. I've been wanting Star Trek to return to TV, but my first reaction to this is not positive.

It's nice to see I'm not the only one thinking that the ship looked part-Klingon in it's design philosophy as a first impression.

The saucer aesthetics definitely look TOS-ish.  Have to get a bridge shot and maybe a look at the uniforms to form a better ideal

It also looks as if the impulse engines are in the wings (looked too bulky to be pylons, imo),  I don't believe I've ever seen a Federation design like that.  The impulse engines are usually part of the saucer section, I believe.

On the plus side, it doesn't seem to be basing off the JJ-verse at first blush.  We see the ship leaving spacedock, not lifting off out of a planetary atmosphere.  But that may be wishful thinking on my part.

In any event, I'm highly unlikely to subscribe to a streaming service for a single program.

USS Constellation from the planet killer episode was NCC-1017.

Depending on how much the Federation plays with the hull registry numbers, I'd say we're within the TOS continuity at least broadly speaking though we're probably talking pre-Enterprise/Kirk.

I remember that someone over at the Trek BBS was working on an updating of the McQuarrie design, oh, a good 2+ years ago.

Here's what he came up with. I think it looks much better than the "professional effort" from CBS

I think the real problem is that McQuarrie's designs are ugly--specifically the triangular secondary hull in this case. TOS Enterprise was saved by making it cylindrical, thus helping to match the nacelles.

I did some research on the show. CBS is not putting out any official word (that I could find) but most of the people who were talking about it said that it was halfway between Enterprise and TOS. That would make this to be a wild time in Federation history, especially with them constantly on the brink of war with several other powers around that see the new kids on the block and want to challenge them to see just how good they really are.

The latest news I found has pretty much everyone familiar with Trek no longer being on the team.   It looks like classic studio "the old series was so bleh, we must reinvent and fix it" garbage.

Also one article had a quote that essentially said that the studio was ecstatic that being on a streaming format meant they could be "edgy" and "R-rated", nudity is possible. .

Last nail in the coffin for me.  I was pretty much set against paying a fee for just CBS shows, they really don't have that much I watch.  But if they are dropping all the Trek aspects I actually enjoyed to shoe horn in a full plate of soft porn and political correctness, well I'll pass.....

Well...the "Archer" Trek had the decontam chamber as it's most interesting feature, not suprised to see suits grab that part as the "best". Who will replace Jolene though?

"Political correctness" has always been part of the Star Trek package.

Hmmm....no.

Star Trek is defined by its ability to present concepts even when they are not in lock step with current beliefs.

Star Trek has been pure anti-PC from before the phrase was coined.

Political Correctness is the death of free expression masquerading as a protection from hurt feelings.
