Shadow7
Greetings all, Since the San Diego Comic-Con has just passed, it always interesting to see all the Cosplayers and their unique and detailed costumes. Recently, I came across a book entitled Champions Live Action Role-Playing or Champions (LARP). This book gives details and rules to a live action form of RPG, with the participants actually dressing up in costume, and playing out the scene. It sounded like a real extensive project, and listed some of those likely to participate in this type of event would be Cosplayers. Has anyone every participated in one of these events, or witnessed one done? Just curious to know. Are there any groups out there that organize such an activity or even run a campaign in such a way? Thanks for any info or input. Shadow7

womble
As a long time (over 30 years now; _gulp_ ) LARPer, I'd personally struggle to be involved in a superhero-level action-focused LARP, for similar reasons to my scepticism about LARPs where projectile weapons are commonplace and supposed to represent current RL SotA (or even approaching that) in that field. I've tried Vampire LARPs, and the various mechanics to represent the super powers of such creatures really get in the way of the actual RP, even as they can do in high-powered "Heroic Fantasy" LARPs. Supers games have such a wide variety of powers and effects that it would be very difficult to convincingly represent on a 1:1 scale. It's easier to do in a LRP (lacking the "A" for "Action") where game mechanics can be expected to be much more table-toppy and abstracted, since "hard skills" aren't as much of an issue. bigdamnhero
Someone (drawing a blank on who) ran a Champions LARP at a local Denver convention a few years ago. I wasn't able to play, but it sounded like it was fun. I think the Champions LARP rules are well done. But I also think a superhero LARP would be difficult to pull off. For one thing, the supers genre is very combat-heavy, and dressing up in costume doesn't help simulate flying around and punching people through walls.
