POD might be nice, but first, we don't know if Hero Games has the rights to the material. Many older characters and adventures reverted to their creators after publication. Second, most of those older books don't exist in any sort of electronic format. Someone would have to take the time to scan all the pages of the original print book and turn it into a PDF or the like. It's not like Hero Games has a lot of free man-hours lying around these days.

Yeah that's the biggest concern.  Getting a good scan of the pages wouldn't be particularly difficult (the actual files of the written work are still out there but it would take work to build them into a PDF, too.  Be worth it, though.

I have this book.

First adventure was right out of H.P. Lovecraft with extra-dimensional creatures taking over the mind of an Explorer who builds up an organization to allow them to take over the World.  The Heroes visit the ruins, and get a chance to go back in time to keep it from happening.

There is another adventure taking place in a dreamscape.

And of course one where the Nazis have taken over the World because F.D.R. was assassinated and Huey Long was elected President and kept of out of World War Two.  (GURPS did a better version of this).

The best was a version of the main Champions Universe where the Heroes are Villains and visa versa.  The Golden Avenger is a secret agent of DEMON, and becomes President of the United States.  (Too bad they didn't have Foxbat as a brooding crimefighter leading the resistance).

I remember that supplement.  The Lovecraft-ish adventure at the beginning still gives me the creeps just thinking about it 25 years later.

I can't speak for the GURPS Nazi alt-universe, but the one done for C3D was interesting enough.  Especially snce (and I may be recalling this incorrectly) the superhero who led the Resistance was the disembodied brain of Albert Zerstoiten in a life-support jar and called himself Professor Preserver.

...and two seconds after I hit POST last night, I remembered that there was a Mirror-Universe chapter which may have been the actual source of my "Professor Preserver" memory. D'oh.

Ah, yes. The Backworld Doctor Destroyer. Backworld is really cool.

One of the best things about Backworld is helping the GM into creating the evil version of your character. Do you go with the "dark you", with the same powers but different personally? Or perhaps the mirror opposite of your character's powers? Or even a different power setup all together?

Barry:  So, imagine there are multiple versions of Earth.  One where, um, the Nazis won World War II.  One where Kennedy was never assassinated...

Winn:  Oh!  One where all of us are evil!

Barry:  Been there.  It sucks.

That said, I've used Backworld in past Champions campaigns as well as my current campaign, always to good effect.  My current campaign has an underlying story arc featuring the Empress of a Billion Dimensions, and I justified bringing many new villains to (and dropping many old ones from) my campaign world by having a major cross-dimensional event just prior to my current Champions campaign starting.

Yeah, Champions in 3D is a great book.

I've typically used generally the same powers / different personality, though I typically change some powers (turning a Blast into an RKA, for example) and/or add one new power to trip the PCs up.  Not typically major changes, though they can have major influence.  (For instance, the Backworld team mentalist added Psionic Surgery and slowly but steadily turned the rest of the Backworlds team into her mind-puppets.)

Most recently, I had the Backworld version of Maker, the PC team's blaster/gadgeteer put more emphasis on her gadget pool than the PC does (slightly higher Control and Pool costs on her VPP, able to change in a half-phase rather than out of combat), at the cost of some of her natural blaster powers.  It showed the player some possibilities she hadn't considered, and she has since dumped points into the PC's gadget pool to follow suit.

One of the old Adventures Club magazines that Hero put out in the 80s had a brief article on Alternate Earth settings.

Red World 1 - Based on the movie Red Dawn, the heroes have to help fight the Soviets who have invaded America.

Red World 2 - In the 1950's charismatic candidate is elected President after promising something for everyone.  After he is inaugurated it's all revealed to have been a Communist plot and he puts in place a Soviet style Dictatorship.  Thirty years later the heroes have to help the resistance.  Patriotic Heroes wouldn't be attacked because the Government has appropriated those symbols for it's own purposes.

Nazi World - German Scientist secretly based their efforts on Einstein's work, and build the Atomic Bomb in 1943.  Britain and Russia Surrender.  When Germany develops V-3 missiles capable of hitting the U.S. in 1947 America surrenders, and Germany and Japan divide up the world.  In 1975 Germany launches an attack on Japan, leaving them in command of a world heavily damaged by a nuclear exchange.  The heroes have to go back in time to keep this from happening.

1984 World - The events in the George Orwell have taken place.  Some 40 years after a nuclear war Oceania, Eastasia, and Eurasia fight a never ending war.  The resistance in this world is a trap.  The heroes can only try to escape.

Backworld - In 1778 General Washington betrays the American Revolution, and declares himself Emperor George I.  In 1862 Emperor Abraham I signs the Extermination Proclamation executing the slave.  In 1945 the American Empire develops the Atomic Bomb bringing the rest of the world under it's control.  Harold I was pleased, and that's why he assassinated Franklin II.  In this world there are no good guys, for the villains are even more ruthless then in our world.  The Heroes can only try to escape.
