The Dark Age Of Champions

This is a thought experment about theoretical superheroes and supervillains in the time between the Golden Age of comics and the Silver Age of comics.

Because of the nature of the comics durring that time period, most so called heros are probably detectives with a dark past, police men with minor powers, or supernatural beings with a love of cosmic justice and a macobe sense of humor.

Let us see what our fellows can think up.

Tome Keeper

Prehaps one of the more unusual "heros" in the Dark Age is the mysterous keeper of macob stories, the Tome Keeper. An undead man carring a huge book, he wanders at night and when he reads from his book, mysterious monsters come forth to the call of cosmic supernatural justice. And much like his comic book counterparts, he has a macobe sense of humor and a love of puns.

During the day, he resides in the mysterious Libary Of The Macobe, an extradimentinal space with many books of horror.

The Tome Keeper wears a high-collared coat and broad-brimmed hat that keeps his face in shadow, so people don't immediately see his true visage. People meet him seemingly by chance and he engages them in conversation. Something they say reminds him of a story in the book he carries. He starts to read it a tale of deception, murder and/or other crime -- and the person realizes it's a story about him and his crimes! And just when the story the Tome Keeper reads comes to its inevitable sticky end, the person confronts the Tome Keeper. Only then does the light hit the Tome Keepr's face, revealing what he really is. And the evildoer flees... right into the doom foretold by the Tome Keeper's tale.

Or something like that?

(I may have to write this guy up.)

Right. Half Crypt Keeper, half Madame Xanadu.

More importantly, besides the 'undead' thing, what powers could he have?

A friend of the Tome Keeper is Old Baba, a 300 year old witch who looks her age. She is the servent of wild nature, neither truly good or evil. She flys upon a broom, and has full control of the four elements, plants, and animals. She can also see far off places by looking into any reflection.

Joe Diamond was, when he was living, a teenage motocycle punk. But unlike most greasers, Joe has a kind heart, a hatred of bullies, and the love of Judy. One day, his best friend Jake betraded Joe and murdered him. Jake had a visit from the Tome Keeper, and then Joe, now a reverent, visited his ex-friend.

Afterwords, Joe refused to rest. He sometimes joins forces with Old Baba and/or Tome Keeper to keep bullies, both natural and supernatural, from doing harm. When they are together, they are sometimes refered to as the Frightmairs.

Chuck and Betty are typical teenagers, apart from the frequency in which they encounter spies and criminals. In those cases, they are assisted by Chuck's older brother, Bob, an FBI agent.

Can our friends thwart the Communist conspiracy? Will Chuck ever get to second base?

...

Also, war comics were a thing, whether WW2 or Korea. It's likely that Chuck would eventually enlist and be sent to Korea, or even that new war in that place with the funny name - Vietsomething.

Betty, naturally, would be distraught, and might even go on dates with someone else for a while! (She always had a bit of a reputation, even if much of it was Communist propaganda).

The Guardian of The Future

Four adventures who are called together to protect the future.

Dale Dirkwood: Leader with smarts, brains, and guts.

Cotton Colons: The mussel of the team and pilot. But don't think him just a dumb jock.

Professor Paul Peters: The teams combat scientist.

Gloria Grimm: The token girl, but don't think she is dumb. She is an expert of the paranormal and cryptozoological.

gumshoe with something extra

Psychic powers. That is Law. Mick Law.

Anyways, the idea is supers who don't go around in funny costumes and such. The Frightmairs focus on thoes who excape normal justice and need some gruesome cosmic justice. They also police the monster underground, so to keep the carnage to a 'only to survive' level. Mick Law uses his psychic powers to help out in his job as a private investigator. The Guardians Of The Future use Science! to guard good science which helps people, and protects against bad science which hurts people. Chuck and Betty are darn lucky meddling kids who stumble onto adventures.
