The more interesting question for me is how/if to pay for these and how much?  One can be looking at 50 pts or more which is a lot of experience to put into them if the characters are expected to pay for them all themselves.  How many players would be willing to do so? At the other extreme is zero or close to this number in which case the players will be getting lots of free toys and perks but may be limited by the GM as to how often they can use them.  I would welcome what people thing about how to make these work.

I would require a bair minimum purchase. Any team vehicle and base can be divided up by all the team members. Don't require the purchase of KS's related to the team (there will be time enough to slowly buy them). So, simply buy the required perks (and not every perk, as you first become a provisional member before you become a full member).

Should all of the X-Men teams have individually tailored package deals or are they all basically the same thing with minor alternatives?

It depends on the team, I would think. Anyone who's graduated from either The X-Men or New Mutants teams might have a similar package deal, while some of the others may not. For example, while Cyclops, Wolverine and Shadowcat might have the Xavier Training Package, Marrow wouldn't (though she might have a Morlock Cultural Deal), nor would Northstar (Department H Training Deal).

About PaladinAgs cost question: I just started a Justice League Campaign and had to decide myself.

  • The way I see it a team membership should not really cost players points if every player's character is on the team and the game master wants them to be because that is the story he wants to tell.
  • On the other hand of course the characters have to be balanced against non-member NPCs. So their membership's Ads and Disads have to be built so the GM can compare. (Being an Avenger is a big plus, being a X-Men has a lot of cons and a little more pros, being one of MOLEMAN's Subterraneans probably is much more a problem than helpful.)

How to solve that dilemma? My way is to give the players that package deal for free, but building it and having on the sheet, so players are aware of their special situation and so I can calculate balanced NPCs.
Attacking THOR as an Avenger is more dangerous than attacking THOR in his own comic. So his opponents need more perks, powers, preparations, resources, or whatever. More Points anyhow.

And of course I put those complications into game. You will feel the benefits, but you will feel the drawbacks, too.

By the way, I consider Hunted: Avengers Foes 8- As Pow, NCI 15 to low. Being an Avenger means your are constantly fighting a string of terran and cosmic threats. That should be a 14-. And they are not As Pow, because most of them are built to take on the whole team; so they are clearly more powerful than any single Avenger.

Thats 15 more pts. of Disads. Nice way to bring down the packages cost's.

I think Hadmar von Weiser's approach seems sensible:

- GMs want players to form a team

- There will be complications as well as benefits

- However, the same "benefit" in terms of equivalent packages or extra CPs elsewhere need to be purchased

- When the hero is operating alone, they won't necessarily get all the benefits (need to determine which), but then again, the opposition they encounter either won't have the benefits or pay a price for having them.

... and even more for X-Factor, a team of mutants posing as human mutant-hunters, and led by Magneto. This adds several distinct Advantages (trusted by mutant haters) and Disadvantages (Hunted by Magneto's Enemy Gallery).

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/X-Factor_(comics)

One small quibble. I don't think Magneto ever ran an X-Factor team. The original five (Cyclops, Marvel Girl, Iceman, Angel and Beast) formed X-Factor after Magneto was instated as the X-Men's leader.

This is the team package I've developed for the PC team, the Sentinels, the premier group in the UK

2          KS: Criminal Law                                           11-

2          KS: The Sentinels, History and Rules            11-

1          TF: The Phoenix

3          Teamwork                                                      (DEX)

8          Contribution to Sentinel Tower (base)

8          Contribution to The Phoenix (jet)

6          Contribution to ATHINA (computer)

3          National Police Powers

3          Member of the Sentinels (includes security clearance and access to MI7, the Special Circumstances Service)

4          Positive Reputation: "It's the Sentinels!", +2/+2d6, world, 11-

1          Sentinel Stipend: Well Off

10        Radio Communicator High Range Radio Perception, difficult to trace (+1/4) earpiece OIF (-1/2), affected as hearing group (-1/2)

Complications

25        Hunted: Enemies of the Sentinels (more pow, NCI, freq, harsh)

15        Hunted: MI7 (more pow, NCI, freq, watch)

10        Social Complication: Subject to orders (Infreq, major)

53        Total Benefits

3          Net Cost after complications

The 3 point cost is the "entry fee" paid by the players (i.e the Membership perk).  Like for like opponents are built on a basis of 50pts extra or similar benefits.

I get what you're saying in principle, but honestly someone who feels confident in attacking Thor in his own book probably isn't all that worried about most of the Avengers.

  • 1 month later...

So here is a question on Super Team package deals

:

They are often provided to the character after the character has been designed etc. and often after a few adventures have been played.  Assuming that the GM has gone down the root of "have this stuff for free, but get these complications oh and the bad guys are getting these extra points too", how does everybody deal with duplication?  Examples are techie based heroes already having radios, some heroes may already have existing skills, bases, access to certain individuals and others, especially existing state sponsored heroes, will have pre-existing complications.

Here are my thoughts:

The player keeps the points for perks, powers, skills etc., but they must be re-spent as close as possible to the original intent. So this means higher skill levels and similar perks.  Where perks can't be bought out then they should be spent on contacts etc. associated with team membership.

Radio's etc. are complicated.  Suggest the player uses the points for a computer support, or add extra points to this where applicable or perhaps another sensor power.

Complications are complicated :-).  Existing levels could be made higher.  The player may have some zero level complications that can now be bought out.
