Write-Up Challenge: The Handyman's All-Purpose Secret Weapon...

Recommended Posts

For those of you who have ever watched The Red Greene Show, it's safe bet you already know what this thread is about. For those not in the know, two words: duct tape.

The challenge for this thread: Write-up a power that represents something that can be done with duct tape. All powers must fit into a 75 Active Point Multipower. Have fun and be creative.

I used to call it "Duct" tape too, but it's IS actually Duck Tape after the Manufacture that first made it. It's kind of like thinking that wire cutters are nicknamed "Dykes" and not "Diags". Easy to mistake one word for the other.

If you buy shitty Duck tape you end up with Adhesive problems. Always buy good quality tools and materials. It will always save you time and money in the long run.

Lets see.
Healing (taping stuff together including wounds) could also be an Aid to body. The Aid might be best because things "fixed" with duct tape tend to deteriorate back to their broken state eventually.
Flash vs Sight (taping their eyes shut)
Darkness vs Sound Single target (Taping their mouth shut)
Entangle, hands or feet only (taping either wrists or ankles together)

Supply your own numbers, but use of Duck Tape should take at least a full Phase if not longer. With Concentration 1/2 DCV. None of this should be usable in combat. IMHO

15 Almost as good as New!: Aid BODY 2d6 (standard effect: 6 points), Expanded Effect (x2 Characteristics or Powers simultaneously) (+1/2), Technology (+1/2), Delayed Return Rate (points return at the rate of 5 per 5 Years; +3 1/2) (75 Active Points); Extra Time (1 Minute, Character May Take No Other Actions, -1 3/4), OAF (Roll of Duct Tape; -1), Only Restores To Starting Values (-1/2), Gestures (Requires both hands; -1/2), Requires A Roll (14- roll; -1/4), 64 Boostable Charges (+3/4) - END=[64 bc]

The etymology, and the distinction between modern "duck tape" and "duct tape," is rather more involved than that. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Duct_tape

And Marcus, any fan of The Red Green Show is considered an honorary Canadian. :hail:

Duct tape is a type of tape and is the correct name for what's being discussed.  By comparison, Duck tape is a BRAND of tape, not a type ... and all sorts of Duck-branded tapes are made by its manufacturer.  Oh, and the first manufacturer to make the stuff as we know it, today, was ... Johnson & Johnson.  (Granted, it was drab olive coloured instead of silver ... and was officially unnamed at the time -- but was nicknamed 'duck tape' by the soldiers who used it.)  You're welcome to fact-check this.

I've bought in all price ranges and am generally a 'buy once, cry once' kind of person when it comes to tools -- even single-use ones like tape, nails, screws, etc.  I'm still not impressed; there's nothing duct tape does as well or better than tapes specialized for specific purposes ... and I've found it generally performs worse than rudimentary clear packing tape (which is typically VERY sticky/adhesive) ... for most things.

I've even tried the military grade duct tape ... which apparently people in the military feel lacks adhesion, too.

Duck Tape Armor: Resistant Protection.

Really?!  Seriously?!  LOL

Everyone here is clear that The Red Green Show called duct tape "the handyman's secret weapon" as a joke, right? What Red used it for was clearly ridiculous -- that was the point. On one episode he was actually trying to attach a salvaged duct to something, and couldn't think of what to use.  But as a system write-up challenge, it's a cool project.

You wouldn't expect to be able to order from the Acme Company all the things that Wile E. Coyote does. ;)

As someone who has used real world duct tape, I'm well aware of that. For this thread, the cinematic and comedic versions of duct tape are what we're going for.
