Aliens in Champions

There's no official alien race that has close to the range and magnitude of powers that Green Martians have. Among shape-shifters the Roin'esh are the most adept, some of them even more than Martians, able to change themselves into normally-inanimate objects, even into raw substances like water or fire. They don't typically have other powers the way Martians do. (And you're right, QM, Hzeel can't change shape, nor do they appear to manifest any other super powers.)

If your player wants to base his/her character on an official race, I would suggest the Empyreans. They're all physically superhuman to varying degrees, and can fly, as well as being ageless and immune to environmental extremes that would kill a human. Additionally, individual Empyreans can manifest a very wide range of other powers. One or another official Empyrean has displayed nearly all the classic Green Martian abilities, and more. It would be highly unusual for one Empyrean to possess such a large array of powers, but I know of no reason why one couldn't.

There are a few other alternatives. Many official Champions races can develop super-powers not typical for their species the same way Humans can; so the PC could be such an exceptional example. Also, Champions Milky Way has plenty of room for an additional species with the desired abilities. As long as said race isn't defined as being the oldest/most advanced/most powerful, or ruling a large swath of the galaxy, there should be no problem.

One might also go the supernatural rather than extraterrestrial route, in which the PC is defined as being the avatar or offspring of a mythological god. The Greek gods in particular were all shape-changers in legend. Champions Earth has quite a few characters with "divine" origins running around.

That is an excellent suggestion, massey.  For example, a Roin'esh rebel against the Malvans' enslavement of his people is captured, and punished for his rebellion by being forced to fight in the arena. Malvan science can induce almost any super power in anyone, so they may have added other abilities such as super strength to his native Roin'esh shape shifting to make his fighting more entertaining. If he was put into the Forum Malvanum on Earth's moon, Earth would be the nearest place to escape to. And you could justify him being Hunted by one of the bounty hunters Malvans employ to acquire or recover superhuman combatants, such as Kanrok the Acquisitioner (Champions Villains Vol. 3).

Perhaps because of the inherent shapeshifting ability, the Malvans put in some sort of telepathic implant designed to control the character.  It helps you find him and helps you turn him off at range if he escapes.  However, during one of the gladiatorial battles, he gets zapped by some opponent and the weird energies makes the implant malfunction.  Now it operates in reverse, giving him the ability to read minds, etc.

So you take a natural shapeshifter, one of the best of his people (which is why the Malvans grab him), they give him a standard "flying brick" genetic overlay, and he's got a malfunctioning telepathic implant.  Now you just need justifications for invisibility, desolidification, and martian vision. :)  Theoretically the invisibility and desolid could be extensions of his shapeshifting, and the Martian Manhunter went like 30 years without using his martian vision.

Escape or was set loose? Malva still wants to get Firewing above all else so what harm in letting a prisoner "escape" to eventually oppose another former gladiator?
