2017-18 NFL Thread

Does the NFL even still vet trades? Because this looks a little like the self-sabotage we've come to expect in Cleveland. You know, if this were England they would have been relegated to the second division a long time ago.

Cleveland is paying for a warm body and a 2nd round pick. They had the cash to burn and it's not like Osweiler is notably worse than what they had out there before.

If it were England they'd be playing soccer and none of this would matter.

It's Monday morning, and there's no news yet on either Tony Romo or Colin Kaepernik.

To put it in perspective: Even Brock Osweiler has a new team, but nobody's made a move for either Romo or Kaepernik yet.

The general consensus I heard when the trade went down was that the Browns had no intention of keeping Oswieler on their roster, preferring to buy out the contract and let him become a free agent. I don't know whether that is still the plan. But since they also released Robert Griffin III, there is still some question what they intend to do at quarterback.

Still, they have cap space galore and can go out and get free agents -- if they are willing to come to Cleveland and the (currently) worst franchise in football (though Washington has a claim on that title as well, at least they've been closer to the playoffs than Cleveland).

They also have a boatload of draft picks and not very much to lose.

And yet, local sports radio STILL wants them to make a play for Garappaolo (much to my hubby's frustration).

What will Garappalo do? He's shown that he can step in when called upon and run a simplified version of Belichek's offense, but he can;t be a full-time starter until Tom Brady retires if he stays in New England. But would he thrive anywhere else, or does he need the system to be effective?

It's the same question that's asked of just about every college quarterback that comes into the NFL, and these days the answer is usually negative.

It's exactly what happened to Brock Osweiler in Houston. He did fine with a simplified version of Gary Kubiak's offense in Denver, but when he became responsible for the whole playbook for a different coach/coordinator, things went south (so to speak).

Thus endeth the lesson.

I'd say depending on the difference, it could take a half a season,
