The Flagsuit

Doc Shadow

I'm sure we've all created a flagsuit at one time or another. So how about a thread to showcase them.

So for your amusement I present mine, The Patriot. Played in one form or the other from the early 90s to 2000. He started as a Pulp character and finished as a modern era superhero.

So, who's next.

P.S. comments are welcome and encouraged

Probably not quite what you were expecting, but I had to run an adventure where the heroes were in Peru.  Here's the local flagsuit, Libertador (Liberator).

No that's fine, it doesn't have to be an American flagsuit. The heroes of other countries are just as interesting.

Any history to go with the stats?

Not a lot.  He's the product of a super-soldier program, very much in the same vein as Captain America.  Like Cap, he's a boy scout at heart, and fiercely loyal to his home country of Peru.

In his sole appearance in my game, while investigating the deaths of several current and past government ministers, he discovered that they were all connected to Profesor Muerte, late head of the now-defunct Terror Inc.  Specifically, those ministers took bribes from him and then hamstrung efforts by UNTIL and foreign governments to move against Muerte's island fortress.  After Muerte's death, they turned states evidence in exchange for immunity from prosecution.  And when Muerte came back from the grave (with Takofanes' help), he had them killed.

Libertador followed the trail back to Muerte's island, and was captured by the new Terror Incorporado.  After being rescued from his cell by the American hero team Just Cause, he fought alongside them to capture Muerte and all of his superpowered minions.

I don't have a copy of him around to post, but one of my favorites was Captain Invincible, basically dumb as a bag of sand and fairly strong, could fly, but his whole schtick and almost all his points went into being incredibly difficult to harm.  I built him so he could fall out of orbit and not be stunned. He had all those "this will never come up" defenses I could afford.

The other one was Sargeant Steele, a low end brick with one of my favorite 4th edition constructs: Variable advantage on hand-to-hand attack.  Because of how cheap it was you could have a pretty powerful HA with all sorts of variants.

I've had several flagsuit heroes appear in my campaigns, or at least be mentioned. Oddly, the American government super-soldier team, Project: Starstryke (it was the '90s) was not full of characters with patriotic names and flag-themed costumes. Most of my flagsuit types have come from other countries: Volksmann, Captain Armenia, etc.

Also several flagsuit adversaries or outright villains, such as an Iranian guy whose battlesuit was painted in the colors of the Iranian flag (red, white and green IIRC); the same team had a Growth-based brick who took the name of Feridun, after a legendary Persian hero.

(Sorry, I don't have write-ups ready at the moment. And most of them were 4th ed.)

I did create an all-Nazi team of flagsuit guys for my Golden Age team; the US hadn't formed its team yet because of the campaign history and how superpowers came about (long story short: only bad guys had superpowers at first, the PCs were the first super powered good guys).  I didn't get any art done for them, unfortunately.  If people are interested I can dig them up and post them.  They were

Fledermaus - shrinking bat girl from Golden Age Champions

Hauptmann Deutschland  - Captain America, but a Nazi (I was a genius, years before they wrote him into a Hydra agent!)

Kriegsmariner - aquaman, basically

Schlagermeister - swordsman, dueller

Schocktrooper - electricity energy protector

Interestingly enough, one of the PCs was a member of what was going to be that team.  The Germans experimented with a version of the Super Soldier program, but it failed catastrophically, resulting in maimed and weakened people.  Considered worthless to the reich, he escaped to America.  When the event happened that brought superpowers to the world, they all gained power.

Storn did several for me including Britannia and the British Bulldog. Red Star which was a Russian WW2 era soldier and an Astronaut.

Britannia was a brick in the Wonder Woman class, the bulldog was a medium level brick, Red Star was talented normal class and the Astronaut had strength and all sort of add ons depending on the situation.

I'm really fond of flag suits (I think that literally the first superhero comic I ever read was captain Britain) so I have a few

Der Englander was active before WWII an supernaturally gifted actor and master of disguise he operated throughout Europe rescuing scientists artists and musicians from the Nazi programs

he's based on this movie Pimpernel Smith from 1941. Itself based on the scarlet Pimpernel

https://youtu.be/P67A5xLoJcw

And gets his powers from a fragment of the lost scabbard of Excalibur.

the fragment is called the heart of Avalon it has two powers over time it enhances the holder making them to the peak of their natural abilities they go from merely good at something to great and from great to legendary the second is enhanced healing toughness and never bleeding out from a wound.

He was superseded by a modern hero with the same origin but different powers while the original got super acting the modern hero got super intuition/precognition

Then there is Britannia

She is the mystic bonding of the spirit of the British isles and a series of teenage girls (think promethea with British National character) there have been several bearers of the mantel since she was first summoned during the reign of Queen Victoria.

Notable versions where the gun toting military Britannia of the Falkland war and the leather jacketed cool Britannia of the late 90s. Her powers are the ability to make weapons and armour from gold and silver material summoned from thin air.

Some of the Bearers have created chariots motorcycles and even seemingly independently intelligent lions.

Lion heart, Lady Lion heart

Both created by the avalon project the UK’s crash WWII supersoldier program desperately trying to give the UK a fighting chance against a Nazi invasion. Lion heart was the only successful recipient of the full serum a badly wounded but highly trained commando.

The serum gave him superhuman strength and resilience welding a golden mace he was an excellent propaganda tool for the allies.

Lady Lionheart on the other hand was an accident exposed to a random Sample of the experimental serums.

she gained superhuman reflexes, enhanced senses and improved tactical cognition.

Combined with her already extensive training in martial arts she was the dagger to Lionhearts blunt instrument.

Lionheart II and Black Jack

Both of these heroes gained their powers from parents who had been experimental subjects for project Avalon (there were many more but these are the flag suits).

Lion heart II was the first public Avalon baby believed to be the son of Lion heart he operated through the 60s before the shocking discovery of his true parentage (Nazi super soldier Eisenfaust) broke him and he became the villain Blackheart in the 70s.

Black Jack was the son of a jamaican commonwealth soldier who survived the early trials of the avalon project and returned with the windrush his 4th child was the only one who got the full power of the avalon serum (several of his nieces and nephews have since manifested some abilities)

during the turbulent times for the Caribbean communities of London in the Late 70s and early eighties he donned a black and white version of the union jack and defended the community from neonazis organised crime and even the police.

He was eventually framed for a crime he did not commit and sentenced to life in jail. He was eventually released when the truth was revealed.

He used a settlement from the government to set up a Nightclub which became a neutral meeting place for London’s superpowered set.

Now in his 60s he is a member of the Tower Ravens the UKs covert operations Super team under the name Mr Cosh and poses as a super tech fence.

Promenade is technically a flag suit although it's the flag of Brighton and Hove County Council who sponsor her under the sanctioned extra normal talent program (she's a gate teleporter who uses assorted grenades and fighting sticks)

As is the Gent (the world's greatest accountant) although in his case it's the coat of arms of the City of London which he wears as a crest on his blazer and has weapons based on it a red holographic sword, shield and small dragon (actually a sophisticated AI assistant).

This character is from a very old Teen Heroes campaign I ran for over 10 years. I built all the characters and when I came up with "Maiden America" boy I thought I was very clever. Then immediately found 3 published characters using the same name. Anyway, she is a martial artist who can generate a force field shield. Built using 4th.

Incidentally the look is totally stolen from Erik Larsen and his character Liberty who is the daughter of another Flagsuit by the name of Super Patriot.
