Black Panther with spoilers

Black Panther is excellent, both as an interpretation of the character and stories from the comics, and as a piece of modern story telling that does not shirk from hard social subjects. It is a movie that is as much about a depth of world building that I really, really enjoy, as much as it is a plot that essentially forces Wakanda out of the shadows, and makes it a relevant player in the larger Marvel universe. Th,e most important character in the movie is Wakanda, and they take the time to explore it and show that it is not "one thing" in some generic, homogenized  abstract of a Afrofuturist nation. It is dynamic, spectacular, yet contentious and diverse within its own borders as well.

I really love that they went fully into the sci-fi wonderland that Wakanda was made out to be, especially in early Avengers comics. (I can only add that in a larger picture, it is clear that the level of futuristic technology shown here will be essential to the battle vs. Thanos coming up in a few short months.)

Bozeman's T'Challa is the calm center in a wide cast of vibrant supporting characters. Lupita Nyong'o just owns the screen as Nakia. The movie is really an ensemble cast, rather than a vehicle for Bozeman, but that is as much about the kind of story that is being told... one of a "people" not just one person.

Oh, and the humor is spot on. It is a natural humor, coming at the right time in ways that feel grounded in the moment, often serving to reveal and build character in a very effective way.

Action wise, the various fight scenes that did not have the full on Black Panther suit were much better than the scenes with them. My one "meh" feeling is that there was just too much CGI of the high-tech Black Panther suit, compared to how they filmed him in Civil War. I think the Russo Brothers just do better fight scenes. That being said, I'm always a fan of giant, armored war-rhinos.

I would also have liked more time with Killmonger . He is an important villain, and complex, and they could have spent more time showing his operation. His plot felt too rushed. I can honestly see why there might be a 3-4 hour version of this movie, because you can tell Coogler had deep plans for a dozen characters, and not enough time to flesh them all out. Andy Serkis' relishes every second as Klaue, and it is unfortunate they kill him off.

I'd put Black Panther in my Top 3 of the Marvel films, because it is hands down the most ambitious, the most fully realized as "its own thing" and it is the most loyal in many ways, to the source material.

My personal rankings:

1. CA: Winter Soldier

2. CA: Civil War

3. Black Panther (but give it time... when I've seen it as many times as I have those other two, we'll see if moves up a notch)

4. Iron Man 3

5. Spider-Man: Homecoming

6. Avengers

7. Iron Man

8.Thor: Ragnarock

9. CA: First Avenger

10. Avengers: Age of Ultron

11. Ant-Man

12. Thor

13. Guardians 1

14. Thor: Dark World

15. Incredible Hulk

16. Iron Man 2

17. Doctor Strange

18. Guardians 2 (god I hated this movie)

It was decent.  I would rank it in the middle of all the Marvel movies.  The middle act seemed to drag on and i wish Killmonger was more fleshed out.  However, of all the Marvel villains so far his motivations were the most believable and understandable.  I liked all the characters, but I thought M'baku the ape king stole the movie.

Rating:  B-/C+

OK if I had to rank Marvel Films, I guess I'd do this (haven't seen several yet)

Avengers

Captain America: First Avenger

Iron Man

Doctor Strange

Ant Man

Iron Man 2

Guardians of the Galaxy

Thor

Captain America: Winter Soldier

Incredible Hulk

Guardians of the Galaxy 2

Avengers: Age of Ultron

Captain America: Civil War

Thor: Dark World

Iron Man 3

I've heard that Black Panther is pretty good, if not quite as fun as previous Marvel films in terms of humor, and very well acted. In fact, the quality of the cast is getting raves.

O.k. I haven't seen it yet, but I'd like to say one thing. The Black Panther was complete and total crap. The cinemtograpghy was done by a blind man, and the acting made porn films look like Oscar winners. Now your probably wondering if I haven't seen it, how I can say that? Because you can say that and not be racist. As for when I actually see the movie. I'm thinking it'll probably be pretty good. Marvel hasn't really made any missteps. But I'm gonna hold off. I thought people waiting in line for weeks for Star Wars was nuts. The people in line for this the first week, well people on this board have seen it and liked it. Maybe I'm worrying needlessly.

Probably should've stopped there.

I saw it Saturday with my wife, who typically avoids MCU films like the plague, but she really wanted to see this one.  Both of us loved it.  It is a visual feast, it touches on relevant social themes, and the villain is relatable.  It's a fun movie.

This whole post has been bugging the crap out of me...and it comes down to the first statement combined with the general sentiment.

If you haven't seen the movie, the only thing you have to go on is the general knowledge of it, which is largely focused on the overwhelmingly black cast, direction, and theme.  So you're judging a movie as crap based on that general knowledge -- which is racist.

I'd rather strongly suggest you consider how your post is coming across.  If you don't mean for it to actually be racist, you may want to post and amendment to explain your intention.  If you do mean for it to actually be racist, you may want to find another site to frequent.

So I'm curious the general statement Is you can hate this movie and not be racist. You then implyied I'm racist and threatened me with being thrown off the board for saying something bad about a movie. Other than proving me right about people going crazy over this. Whats wrong with me saying a movie is bad? Espically when I admit I think I'll like it when I see it.

Read my post.

"No offense, but..." is generally a lead-in to something offensive.

"This isn't racist, but...." is generally a lead-in to something racist.

Without any context for your opinion other than "I haven't seen it," your statement applies to Black Panther in specific, and is viewed as a reflection on what is known about the movie.

Now, if you preface your statement with other reasons/explanations it becomes significantly more palatable -- just like any other review (from those that have seen it).  "I really don't like Marvel movies, and while I haven't seen this one yet, I can only assume that it will be the same poor acting, poor cinematography, etc."  That explains your opinion as a general opinion of Marvel movies and not specific to Black Panther.

So, again, I would strongly suggest that you explain your statement a bit more thoroughly.  Unless, of course, you actually meant to be racist...in which case I would strongly suggest that you quit posting entirely.

He was just making a point about freedom, opinion, and people being individuals with different outlooks.  You can tell that by reading the entire post, instead of stopping at the first few lines.

Not well.  I did read the entire post (when it first went up)....and decided not to respond to it until after I had actually seen the movie, so that I could determine if perhaps there was something I wasn't aware of behind his apparent need to express that particular outlook.

If this is the hill he wants to die on, then so be it.  Banning will occur.

Alternately, if his intent was NOT to express a racist opinion, all he really needs to do is say "sorry, that was not my intent and I apologize that it came across that way"

Its plain from any reading that it wasn't intended to be racist, you can tell that from these words right here:

Criticizing a movie does not make anyone racist in any remotest sane sense of language or reason.  You can say a movie sucks even if it didn't without being racist.  I can say "John Woo's film The Killer was crap"  without being racist against Asians or Chinese in particular.

Surely you understand that??   I mean you can infer whatever you want but claiming its RACIST to criticize a movie is a bit much, don't you think?

Okey dokey

Attention all board members the moderators of this board do hereby declare that any criticism of the film Black Panther is racist and anyone suggesting a lack that complete and total love for the movie will be forever banned. Nothere will be given one final chance to praise it or be banned from the board forever.

Nothere "Never having seen the movie I think Black Panther is the greatest movie ever made in the history of movies. This movie is so great Hollywood can close now because they can never make a movie close to this one. You should burn all movies and T.v. shows you have at home for being an insult to the unquestionable greatness that is Black Panther. All cable channels should only show this movie 24 hours a day."

All members of this board who have not praised Black Panther have exactly 72 hours to come to this thread and declare it's greatness or this board will call you a racist. 72 hours after that if you have not praised Black Panther you will be banned.
