Everybody likes jokes. Here is a thread to post your favorite or most recently heard jokes. Here's one I heard today: A woman takes a lover home during the day while her husband is at work. Her 9-year old son comes home unexpectedly, sees them and hides in the bedroom closet to watch. The woman's husband also comes home. She puts her lover in the closet, not realizing that the little boy is in there already. The little boy says, "Dark in here." The man says, "Yes, it is." Boy - "I have a baseball." Man - "That's nice." Boy - "Want to buy it?" Man - "No, thanks." Boy - "My dad's outside." Man - "OK, how much?" Boy - "$250" In the next few weeks, it…

In memory of Tom Tyler, aka Vincent Markowski, of Hamtramck, Michigan, whose birthday was today, 1903. His family was Lithuanian. One of his film roles was the World's Mightiest Mortal, Captain Marvel, widely regarded as one of the finest serials ever produced. He also starred as The Phantom, and appeared in more than 150 movies. A champion weightlifter, he qualified for the 1928 Olympics, the same year that he won the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) heavyweight weightlifting championship, lifting 760 pounds (340 kg)—a record that stood for fourteen years. Tom developed a rare disease, scleroderma, costing him his looks, his marriage, his livelihood and his life.

Fourteen FBS teams woke up in new conferences this morning, so it seemed a good time to start a new thread. One of those teams is BYU. After more than a decade of wandering in the desert of FBS college football independence, the long wait is over. BYU Athletics Officially Joins The Big 12 Conference BYU is joined in the 14-team Big XII by Houston, Cincinnati, and Central Florida, all from the American Athletic Conference. (Texas and Oklahoma are leaving the Big XII next year for the SEC, which started this whole mess.) The American responded by raiding Conference USA, taking Charlotte, Alabama Birmingham, Florida Atlantic, N…

Well, it looks like we had our first spring training game last night, so the new baseball year has officially begun. Let's kick it off with an amusing little article from college baseball: LOOK: LSU designated hitter Hayden Travinski uses pencil bat Maybe he can land an NIL deal with Ticonderoga.

Based on that other thread, what non-fiction books have you read recently? The main reason for this thread is to inform our fellow herophiles on what non-fiction books are worth the time to read. The secondary reason for this thread is to increase my post count The first book I rate is Dead Men Do Tell Tales: The Strange and Fascinating Cases of a Forensic Anthropologist by William Maples A good book to learn what bones can tell about a person and what killed them. This is not a textbook however, it is a memoir of a forensic paleontologist (William Maples) and how he approaches the cases. As a history geek I especially enjoyed the last chapters …

Are you in school? Do you teach school? Do you have family members in school? Are you experiencing (or have you experienced) strange, remarkable, and/or amusing things related to school? Or do you just like reading and taking about other people's school experiences? Then this thread is for you.

This is the thread for when you're feeling unreasonable, cranky, and/or just plain snarly. By posting here, you automatically concede that you're crankiness has made your arguements questionable at best, and that anyone snapping at you is cranky as well so don't get really offended. Don't post on this thread if you're in a good mood, happy, or (god help us) chipper... Chipper is what we do to wood, it has no place on the cranky thread This is the place to B*tch, moan, and complain about how lousy the little things in life are in petulant fashion. Enjoy... only, don't enjoy too much, that'll go against the feel of things. and that'll make me c…

Here's the deal: We'll start with a topic. I will post something matching that topic that begins with the letter A. The next post will be something matching the same topic that begins with the letter B. The next one will be the letter C, and so forth. Whoever posts the answer with the letter Z picks the next topic. Let's go. Topic: Modes of Transportation Aeroplane

Season's tipped off. Right now, the games largely don't even count as cupcakes...lots of em are cotton candy. Barely more than exhibition games. Locally...some may remember that NMSU shut down its entire basketball program midseason, after serious, severe allegations arose. The other shoe dropped today. 3 former players were charged with multiple felony charges (including a second degree charge) of criminal sexual assault and false imprisonment. 13 charges were filed against 2 of the defendants; 11 against the 3rd. The university is also facing another round of lawsuits...some were settled over the summer...related to this. …

I just noticed this: "Please consider these as temporary, advisory answers until such time as Steve Long's health and personal circumstances permit him to resume answering rules questions himself." What happened?

Holy forced spontaneity! It's the Impromptu Superdraft II! What: This is a supers draft. You'll be making one selection each weekday, starting tomorrow (Monday, March 4th) and running until Friday, March 15th. All selections are exclusive. Who: All the usual rules about different versions of the same character apply. In short, different characters with the same name are fine; different versions of the same character are out. (For example, if Ant-Man Hank Pym is drafted, you could still draft Ant-Man Scott Lang, but not Yellowjacket Hank Pym.) When: You will make a pick each weekday, starting tomorrow, at noon Eastern Time. No, I don't…

WARNING: The contents of this thread may be too disturbing or terrifying for some people. If you have a low PRE score and/or are easily squicked out, now would be a good time to head for the exit. If you're at the office right now, we cannot guarantee that everything here will be 100% work-safe, so please use discretion. It has been suggested that the NGD boards have been clogged with multiple annoying threads, all linking to other, usually funny websites. It was also suggested that they be given a single thread where they may be posted, commented upon, etc., similar to the random musings thread. Given that I tend to link to other sites quite a bit, and not wanting to be considered annoying, the Thread For Random Links is born. While it may be confusing at times with mixed comments and multiple links, at least it will be less annoying to others and hopefully contributory towards the new character of the NGD board. I'll open this thread with the funny baby.

... but aren't, for any of a number of reasons. Usually because people don't want warnings, they want platitudes. Occasionally one does get through, though. Two examples from my life: "An ambition far beyond your reach." -- I got this one at dinner the day I mailed off my last application to grad school. "A handful of patience is worth more than a barrel full of brains." -- I got this one at the celebratory dinner the day I did my PhD oral defense. So to kick this thread off, from a collection of disquieting possibilities I've collected.... You should see a physician. Soon.

We have threads for quotes from games, books, movies, etc. But I think there should be a thread for quotes from life. With or without context. Things you have said or heard yourself, that were not directly lifted from gaming or fiction. From my divorce: My wife: "It's not just a sex thing with you, is it? It's a romantic thing." Me: "You've only now understood that? I always thought it was something that went without saying." After a silence - Me: "It's taken me seven years to realize, that you and I speak a completely different language of the heart." Lucius Alexander Many palindromedary taglines would probably qualify for this thread....
