Just curious as to how other people feel is the best way for them to learn things. Mine could be considered strange, by being willing to screw up. Many people feel that is not a good way to learn things, but I feel that it is, as by making mistakes not only do you see that it should not be done but get to realize the consequences as well. The only thing with this is to make sure that you make every mistake original as if you are repeating mistakes then you are not actually learning anything.

To all our American HEROphiles: If any of you know someone who keeps a secondary telephone for personal safety -- something they would not want certain people to know they have -- it's important that you tell them to turn it completely off tomorrow. The US government will be testing its Emergency Alert System (successor to the old Emergency Broadcast System) Wednesday, October 4, reportedly between 2:20 PM and 2:50 PM Eastern time, although that time frame may not be guaranteed or absolute. The full sound of the telephone may come through even if the 'phone is put on "mute," so the secondary 'phone should be completely shut off. Test details (among…

A little history of Project M-1. America has had motorcycles for years. We market motorcycle nostalgia back to the old Harley Davidsons and Indians (the real ones. HA! Sorry. Inside joke for those who know motorcycles), even the Stanley steam-powered bikes and a few dozen other home-grown speed machines. The fact is that motorcycles didn't become the amazing things they are today here in the USA. We can go to business classes all we want and talk about "competition" and how it breeds better product, but America has always had a serious problem in this area: the largest "competitors" don't strive to improve for improvement's sake. They benchma…

Thought it might be interesting to start a hunting game where you have one or two hunters with paint ball guns hunting four or five runners. They would be at a large area with lots of trees and places to hide and a few miles in width and length. The hunted would get a short head start and have to try to get to the safe point before getting shot by the hunter(s). So how much would you charge for this?

I live in the north of Canada and now with out really hot and dry summer we have had more than our share of wildfires. One community called Enterprise was completely wiped out and the surrounding forests are black, soot covered and desolate. My community called Yellowknife underwent a forced evacuation. Twenty thousand people (yes 20000) were ordered to vacate the city within 48 hours. (cut off was Friday August 18 noon). Reason: a wildfire fifteen (15) outside city limits. Oh and the only road going OUT of town heads right through that fire. (I wish I were making this up as a hollywood screen writer would be laughed at if he came up wi…

Inspired from something I read on the Book of Face: Of the many and various iterations of Star Trek, what does each one do best? What makes each series stand out from the others? Here are the various series for your consideration: The Original Series: The Animated Series: The Next Generation: Deep Space 9: Voyager: Enterprise: Discovery: Picard: Lower Decks: Prodigy: Strange New Worlds: If you haven't seen one or more of them, that's okay. Just say "Haven't seen it" and move on.

The scoop: Someone posts a word or logic puzzle. Upon confirmation of a correct solution, the one who solved it posts the next one. Got it? Good. -- Arnold Schwarzenegger's is big. Donald Trump's is small. And Madonna doesn't have one. What is it?

Me included!!! I hope all of you in SoCal and other areas that are getting *crushed* by rains and flooding are safe. From what I'm reading right now, it's mostly property damage, fortunately, but still, that's no fun.

I got a Kindle Fire 8 for Christmas. It's worked fairly well, but the Android operating system that's on it is, for lack of a better word, lame. The Amazon app store is lacking, to say the least. Worse, I can't use my Kindle to access any of the Google apps. That's unfortunate, because my school district uses Google a lot, and it would really be helpful to have a device more mobile than a laptop but larger than my phone to access the stuff. Now, I understand that it is possible to replace the handicapped Amazon version of Android with the same OS that my Android phone is running. Has anyone here done this? And how tech-savvy does one have to be to accomplish …

Left my job today after 8 Years and 6 Months of public service. 4 fires, a mass shooter incident at the VA home, global pandemic response and so many Suicide/DTS/DTO incidents I literally lost count. Some of the best humans I’ve had the pleasure to work alongside, and the privilege of leading. Crazy transition. In 10 days I start my new gig (very similar to the previous one but different County). Really looking forward to the many new things I have to learn about the communities I’ll be serving, and the local priorities. Going to use the time to get my head on straight and study the community health assessment and other state/local reporting so I’m ready to go f…

I couldn't find an updated basketball thread, so here we are. And let's begin with the most compelling non-story of the off-season, the Kevin Durant saga. Kevin Durant trade rumors: Superstar tells Nets owner to deal him or fire Steve Nash, Sean Marks, per report Something about inmates running the asylum...

As a number of people have become increasingly dissatisfied with Twitter in recent weeks, two new options have arisen. One is Threads, which is apparently Meta's (that is to say, Facebook's) version of the platform. The other is Bluesky, which a couple of my academically-minded friends are interested in trying—but apparently it's available by invitation only at the moment. Has anyone here used either of these platforms? What has your experience been like? Pros and Cons? Is either (or both) of them worth pursuing?

Yes it is that time of year when Americans decide they have too many fingers and decide to lose some. Not by the conventional way of a slip with a knife or having them shot off as in Taxi Driver or the Ballad of Buster Scruggs, no they use explosives. Americans, they are a strange bunch. So happy lose your fingers day ! And thanks to the people who posted about this as I was running out of ideas to mock the Colonial Rebels.
