Last night I dreamt that I was walking along a stream, I heard voices coming from underneath a bridge. I looked under the bridge and saw a bunch of anthropomorphic mice*. they had gathered under the bridge because there was "good" air beneath the bridge and "bad" air everywhere else (a subconscious connection to the many fires and "smokevercast" we've had locally for several days now) they were talking about their friend who had fallen into the water and was drowning. I reached in the water and rescued their soggy friend before continuing on my way. *See: American Tail, Chip 'n' Dale's Rescue Rangers, or Flushed Away for examples.

Manga has lost one of its giants with the death of Space Opera legend Leiji Matsumoto. His best-known creations are the legendary space pirate/rebel Captain Harlock, the pioneering Space Battleship Yamato (one of the first anime series to be released in the US, under the title Star Blazers) and the proto-transhumanist fantasy Galaxy Express 999. He also created the music video series Interstellar 5555 for Techno masters Daft Punk. He was known for his distinctive art style with languid lines contrasting with detailed and realistic technology, his controversial relationship with war (to this day his film The Cockpit is banned in much of the world), and his po…

The Article At The New Republic Saw this on Facebook and thought I'd pass it along. Seems to me this would make an excellent refuge for someone who really wanted or needed to stay hidden. Could be really great as a setting in Champions, Dark Champions, or Pulp Hero. Or maybe someone here needs to really stay hidden. . .

So, we're planning on hitting the UK in September for a vacation (details as to when exactly and how long are still up in the air). Probably London will be where we're staying (not sure where specifically)... ...now we just need to figure out what we're gonna do! Hubby is a big proponent of Doing Things We Can't Do In The States, so, while museums aren't bad options, he wants to know what else? We're thinking about visiting the Eye. I am insisting on hitting St John for dining one night. Any other restaurants worth checking out? A friend suggested taking a bus to Stonehenge, then visiting Bath afterwards. …

Why not give this its own thread, since their season starts today. Better here than cluttering up the NFL thread. Mind, I'm not all that likely to pay any attention to it until after March Madness, but hey...

This is an experiment. What we have is an attempt by me to create the longest running, NON game thread. Our record to beat, is the Catsuit thread. Quite a challange. And we are going to have to keep this thing as best we can. Threads and Tangents are welcome. Getting it locked is not desired. Now all we need is a launching point. What does everyone feel about the Red Sox "Curse"? And are you aware that this year Stephen King is going to every game and will be writing a book about the season.

In memory of Tom Tyler, aka Vincent Markowski, of Hamtramck, Michigan, whose birthday was today, 1903. His family was Lithuanian. One of his film roles was the World's Mightiest Mortal, Captain Marvel, widely regarded as one of the finest serials ever produced. He also starred as The Phantom, and appeared in more than 150 movies. A champion weightlifter, he qualified for the 1928 Olympics, the same year that he won the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) heavyweight weightlifting championship, lifting 760 pounds (340 kg)—a record that stood for fourteen years. Tom developed a rare disease, scleroderma, costing him his looks, his marriage, his livelihood and his life.

It has been suggested that the NGD boards have been clogged with multiple annoying threads, all linking to other, usually funny websites. It was also suggested that they be given a single thread where they may be posted, commented upon, etc., similar to the random musings thread. Given that I tend to link to other sites quite a bit, and not wanting to be considered annoying, the Thread For Random Links is born. While it may be confusing at times with mixed comments and multiple links, at least it will be less annoying to others and hopefully contributory towards the new character of the NGD board. I'll open this thread with the funny baby.

Every once in a while, I'll see a news story that restores my faith in humanity and makes me feel like the powers-that-be haven't given up on this world just yet. This thread is for sharing stories like that.

Domains of Influence. These are special realms of control and responsibility for which you are known and prayed to. You will have one primary domain and three secondary domains. Four episodes in, we're on the verge of dropping Star Trek: Discovery from our lineup. The two-episode series opener was good, but the next two episodes revealed those episodes to be the bait for a switch to something else entirely. As a recent fan of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, my only remaining question is whether the inclusion of Christopher Pike makes Discovery S2 worth watching. If you're a fan of SNW, what's your opinion? Is Discovery S2 worth watching for Pike even if we don't care about the other Discovery characters or their storylines?

"I'm bad, and that's good. I will never be good, and that's not bad. There's no one I'd rather be than me." Thanksgiving and Christmas have come and gone. We've spent the last few weeks being nice, in the interest of peace on Earth and good will toward mankind. Now it's time to be naughty. For this month's Superdraft, we'll be choosing a team of villains. This will be a dark reflection of the Five Man Band trope (details below). All character picks are exclusive, and all the usual rules for drafting characters will apply. You will make a total of 12 picks in this draft: Location: This is the physical setting for the story. T…

Based on that other thread, what non-fiction books have you read recently? The main reason for this thread is to inform our fellow herophiles on what non-fiction books are worth the time to read. The secondary reason for this thread is to increase my post count The first book I rate is Dead Men Do Tell Tales: The Strange and Fascinating Cases of a Forensic Anthropologist by William Maples A good book to learn what bones can tell about a person and what killed them. This is not a textbook however, it is a memoir of a forensic paleontologist (William Maples) and how he approaches the cases. As a history geek I especially enjoyed the last chapters …

So, the Eagles completed their beatdown, the postgame coverage has run its usual course. Local news comes on. Blah, blah, blah, blah. Story about the funeral of the former El Paso police chief's memorial and funeral...he died unexpectedly at 71. Memorial...yeah, cool Graphic showing the actual funeral service...to be held at Evergreed East funeral home..... Oh dear...and that graphic wasn't spur of the moment, this wasn't a breaking story or anything.
