What (besides not taking cover ) are some common and easy-to-fix tactical gaffs you've noticed players in modern day to near-future police and/or military campaigns make?

For a "modern day" character (1980 onwards), what kind of background could be fun yet practical that explains their great wealth?

Just curious and wondering if there is a Hero variation or alternative rule that uses Ego Score or rolls to create a situation like the sanity points in Call of Cthulu type games and genre? I would like to incorporate more of this aspect into a Dark Champions or even a Steampunk game. It would make it much more interesting to throw the curve ball of the supernatural in. Anyone see anything like that?

Using HERO 5th Edition, or HERO 6th Edition, how would you build a boot with a internal concealed blade that can also be quickly deployed?

I've been pouring over the old "Widows and Orphans" PDF and The Asylum books. Some pretty good stuff, I have to say. While reading these two, I kept thinking of HP Lovecraft's new England and then my mind jumped to the Qilophic* (can't spell it worth a damn, or remember how to save my life) realm, I know no genre mixing to that scale but still >< Point, point...I do have some questions I keep wondering about Toddbury asylum. Which is mentioned a few times in the Dark Champions books, and it seems kind of like a stand in for Arkham, but I can't seem to find much more info on it besides its brief mentioning (I'm a fairly lazy GM, I know, and I like the me…

During times past, it was much easier to be a wandering adventurer: there was less (or no) electronic record keeping, borders were not quite as secure, and the climate in general was more flexible for those with no real home. Nowadays? Well, there are certainly more obstacles to contend with. What skills/traits in general would a "modern day" (mid 1980s onwards) character need to make it during their journey?

Is there any place in any of the books that talks about stats for mid 1800's era smooth bore and rifled cannon stats? I have not be fortunate enough to locate this in any of the books. I see a few promising threads that MIGHT contain something like this but I do not have time at the moment to look though 100+ pages in many of these threads to find any mention of them and am hoping someone can recall a specific thread to narrow down my search. We are trying to figure out what some good stats would be for this weapon: http://civilwarwiki.net/wiki/1.5_inch_Hughes_Breechloading_Cannon

So just in game terms, what would I have to Skill and Stat the guy in the video to do this, assuming the numbers he gives are accurate? Of course, he is from Kentucky...so there's that.

So, I haven't been able to come up with anything good for the Creepy Hotel thread. It's not that there isn't creepy stuff out there, just that not everything is creepy in the right way for the Hotel. Fortunately, Karmakaze came through for me... sort of. On Tuesday, she sent me a link to the SCP Foundation wiki, sort of a spiritual successor to SJ Games' Warehouse 23 Basement (since Warehouse 23 itself is their online store, they moved the unsellable boxes to the basement some time ago). It's also something of a forerunner to the Syfy show Warehouse 13 (which isn't bad, as far as Syfy shows go -- it's almost science fiction!) However, of all of those, the guys w…

First of all this is a great book! Wish I found it years ago. Question: the Super-Skills listed from pages 106 - 150 are very cool - but obviously Dark Champions was written for 5th Edition. Since I am using 6th Editon to run my game does anyone know (or has anyone done any conversion analysis) as to whether these can taken as read (no need to convert them to 6th Edition - ie re-point them out) or should one go through them and figure out the new (if any) point cost for each of them? Am I making too much of a big deal about this? The rest of the book can be taken pretty much as is - use the combat rules for 6th which are very comprehensive and add in mat…

I got hooked on Hero System because I wanted to play Champions - now that I have been working my way through the rules and expanding my horizons I started to figure out what sort of game I wanted to run. I read through all the Champions books then bought Pulp Hero and then Dark Champions and I have to say WOW Dark Champions is the setting I have been dreaming of. I wanted to run a more Iron Age game with Champions but I wanted to have the PCs be some of the first Super Powered beings to come on to the scene (I did this years ago using TSR's Marvel Superheroes FASERIP system - and it was a success - longest game I ever ran - 3 years). The PCs are either hardwar…

Currently, Dark Champions seems to be revamped (or defined, I guess might be the proper word) as the "action movie style" for Hero which is good enough, except I'm more a fan of Dark Champions as just that, low level supers dealing with more "realistic" but occasionally powered crime such as Daredevil, early Spiderman, Punisher, occasionally Batman without even the "kiddifying" that is done for animated series versions of these characters. Fourth Edition DC seemed to have more information about that style of play while Fifth almost ignores it favor of modern day action. Is there going to be any support for street level supers in upcoming products for Dark Champions?

I'm trying to figure out Smith and his guns from the movie Last Man Standing and how to build the attacks. The GM wants attacks capped at 70 active points. For the update from the 30's to the present, the guns will still be based on the full frame 1911 Colt. It would have tritium dots (to help reduce penalties from firing in the dark), ambidextrous magazine releases and flat black finish. No laser sights or stuff like that. In the first gunfight, the bullets seem to cause a terrific amount of knockback. The gangster is knocked backwards 5 or 6 meters, out into the middle of the street. In that fight, the bullets go through a pane of glass when Smith shoots …

http://www.physorg.com/news/2012-01-self-guided-bullet-prototype-mile.html A couple of boffins from Sandia labs have created a self guided bullet. It homes in on a laser dot on the target. They want to sell this to the Military, Law Enforcement, and of course the Enthusiast market. It is fired from a smooth barrel longarm. It uses fins to steer itself to hit the target and seems to have an accurate range out to a mile.

I'm putting this here, even though it has some Star Hero aspects...But for me it rings more Dark Champions bells...so...here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7J2M-J1OtMs&feature=bf_prev&list=FLA4j6w6ihuYX4Dbudiqi_ZQ& And yes, there are some cliches involved....But then, it's a "big bang and boom" movie so.....shrug. -Carl-

I'll link to the site, and recommend "Facing Violence" and "Violence A Writer's Guide" but really his practical attitude and experience and ability to communicate it is what I find so helpful. http://chirontraining.com/Site/Home.html Excerpt from his blog: "Once upon a time, waiting to start a class I noticed a guy outside trying to change his tire. The tire was slung under the truck and he had a rod which was supposed to be inserted into a socket and turned to lower the tire. It wasn't working. He was standing there behind the truck with two friends trying to figure it out. So I went out, crawled under the truck and started feeling around. That’s an i…

I'm trying to find a good location for a magic/curio shop in an urban fantasy game set in Hudson City. The image I have in mind is an old victorian building in a formerly residential area turned touristy shopping place. Similar to many parts of San Francisco or other cities with an "old town". Any ideas?
