I am considering using one of the Magic Systems from Killer Shrike as one of my systems of choice. In it you buy a MP with a set list of advantages and limitations (which must balance each other so +1/2 advantage must be balanced with -1/2 limit.), each of which corresponds to a style. One over arching limitation is RSR, every style MUST take that. So one style has as advantages 0 End (+1/2) and Incant. (-1/4) and Side Effects (-1/4). So I rarely use SE and I read up on them. WOW! They go from dangerous to totally deadly. The default one is 30 pt effect like an EB that has no defense, so 6d6 means 6 body and 21 stun. For a 125-150 PC this is almost certain death …

I unexpectedly received a box from my mother containing the notes and character sheets from my long-running "old school" D&D campaign. This game ran for years, from childhood to young adulthood. I haven't seen this stuff in 20+ years. After the nostalgia wore off I though "I really need to translate this into hero (something I considered doing "way back when") and reboot it yet again. Post One. Real World History. My early D&D campaigns were shared with an eponymous co-GM so that we could both play. We originally used Lankhmar as its base city. We didn’t know much about Newhon. Our only reference was the Newhon Mythos section of Deities &am…

So, my current Fantasy campaign is set in a large port city. Waterfront neighborhoods tend to have nautically-themed nicknames. I've named most of them, but I hope people whpo know more about matters maritime can suggest more, or better names having to do with building or servicing ships and shipping. So far there are Galleys and Dhows (two of the more common types of visiting ships), Stevie (for the stevedore's guild hall), Oldfish and Newfish (old and new fish markets), Shopwrights, Riggings, Spars, Nets, Sailmaker, Tarside, Chandlery and Groggery (heavy on taverns, even by waterfront standards). One of the main streets is Anchor Way. Ship Street, Captain St…

Directed primarily at those who have played or own multiple editions: Are the Fantasy Hero weapons stats something that have been reprinted, more or less unchanged, edition to edition? Or have their been significant revisions? For instance, has the pike always been -1 OCV, 2d6+1 K?

Has anyone converted or adapted the old Horror Hero Spirit rules to 6E? I liked that approach as well as the creatures based on it, but the mechanics are for 4E. They could probably be adapted straight across to 6E, but there may be some overlap with 6E powers since things have changed a bit, and costs may no longer be relevant. So before I put any real effort into it, I thought I'd ping the community and see if anyone has already gone down this road.

Suddenly transferred into a medieval fantasy setting, a handful of people from our world find themselves inhabiting the bodies of powerful heroic figures there. For their own reasons, the gods of this fantasy world selected people whose personalities matched certain criteria they were looking for and were about to die in our world. Perhaps one was flatlining on an operating table, another was seconds away from a fatal car crash. Plucked from our world, they are given a choice: accept the death that was coming for them or take a chance on this new world. The bodies they are given to inhabit are individuals who have the right skills and abilities to get the job done…

Just curious. On the D&D3 -> Hero conversions what would you change character point wise for 6th?

I'm thinking of turning over my entire bestiary of critters to you guys. I just don't have time to finish it up. I've promised stuff before only to skip away without completion... Its 166 pages without illustrations or flavor text... mostly because when I use them, I know what they're all about, so I've never had to finish them up. Maybe I should put them together in themed batches and release them over time... dunno. Guidance is requested.

Guide to the Gods, by Marjorie Leach, might be useful to FH GMs in designing gods for settings. Or at least the table of contents might be, as a source of divine types you might not have thought of: I Cosmogonical Deities 1 Primordial Beings 2 Male/Female Principle, Angdrogynous 3 Deities of the Universe, Space 4/5 Supreme Being, Great Spirit, High God/Creator Deities II Celestial Deities 6 Sky and Heaven Gods 7 Solar Gods: Dawn, Day, Light, Twilight, Eclipses 8 Lunar Gods: Eclipses 9 Gods of Night, Darkness 10 Stellar Gods: Constellations, Planets, Stars III Atmospheric Deities 11 Weather Gods: Thunder, Li…

I've posted about this general idea earlier but I can't find the thread. Currently there's a reddit thread about character subclasses players wish existed--in other words, character concepts 5e can't (currently) handle. Here's a list of highlights: Unarmed Brawler (STR-based) Storm Druid Plant Druid Fey Sorcerer Dragon-pact Warlock Shaman Warlock Ice Cleric STR-based Monk (see Unarmed Brawler) Jester Bard Barbarian Shaman I'm mainly posting this to gloat (and I'm in a 5e campaign right now!) but I thought it was interesting how 5e players continue to limit themselves to the existing class based framewo…

Now that I have a list of gods for my campaign (if I ever get around to it) I want to get a list of powers that the gods give their followers. I don't agree with the AD&D clerics as medics / revivers types. So what abilities would be possible with the following. Also if you need to expand the portfolio in a logical manner, please do so! Gods of StabilityCommerceJusticeEarth/AgricultureSkiesNight skiesGods of ChangeLuck/Trickery Storms WarFire Pestilence

I love the setting and was curious if there's anyone else on these boards who do too? Steve did and amazing job with the book and I think it deserves more supplements. Although the base book is very detailed in terms of races, geography, theology, etc, I think there's tons of room to expand on. The setting has such good bones that it feels criminal to not expand on it. Also, an update to 6th edition would be fantastic although strictly not necessary.

Turakian Age Cities Poll -- What Would You Most Like Steve To Consider Working On? 1 2

I've been reading a long thread about the Turakian Age setting recently, which naturally has inspired me to think about the setting and ways to add to it -- specifically, the possibility of a city book, since I don't think I've written a detailed Fantasy city book. So I thought I'd find out which cities would most interest y'all, and why. I make no promises, but knowing what y'all suggest will help me guide my imagination. My own personal most-likely candidates would include Aarn, Eltirian, Talarshand, Tatha Gorel, Tor Vilos, and Trisadion, though any of them would be interesting to work on.

In the HERO System 6th Edition selection in the Store, what is the difference between the "Fantasy Hero Complete" and the "Fantasy Hero 6th Edition"? One has a book 'and' a PDF of the book, which makes it quite attractive, and the other is just a PDF. However they are clearly different products. Obviously the Steven Long one is the 'official' one. If I was to choose one, which would you advise. Would both be super useful? (Money is seriously tight for me these days.) I am quite conversant with Hero and have the original 6th edition books already. I have and regularly use Hero Designer as well.

So while I am using a blend of 5thR and 4th for my game I will ask my questions from a 5thR view. In many FRPG’s both table top and console/computer there are many “spells” or powers that are can be “cast” with the caster paying the entire cost of mana (or whatever) on the instant of casting but then the spell effect lasts for a period of time (multiple turns/segments/actions/etc.). For Hero I have usually defaulted back either to requiring the player pay End on an ongoing manner or using charges. But that isn’t really what I want to do. I want the “spell” to be a fire-and-forget style where the caster pays all End (or Mana/or whateve…

So as part of my continuous mental exercise to develop a campaign I dusted off my old Star Crown Empire book from ICE. I have described how I will change the size of the continent, where some cities are, now I come to religion. Now I don't know if I will give my priests spells or powers (probably) but religion will play a role. To this end they describe ten gods.. But some are a ..... problem. they doesn't fit. Gods of Law Order and Commerce Justice Wealth (already in the commerce, I feel this is redundant) Skies (male) Night skies (female) Gods of Chaos Luck Storms War Fire Filth and disease (seriously) See I like most of it because there …

I have some quick questions for Fantasy sessions. Regarding combat maneuvers. 1- Do you use all the optional maneuvers? 2- Which one of your sessions do you exclude. 3- Do you authorize Haymaker for throwing weapons (Bows) 4- and do you authorize Haymaker for spell? Steph

I am looking for some decent maps to use in my fantasy frontier wilderness campaign. The campaign is a small population one where the largest centers are small towns (3000 pop max) with the majority living in small villages and hamlets with single extended family steadings being where most people live. The land is forested hill country with broad river valleys and bounded by distant mountains. I am looking for maps for the local region as well as villages and a town or two. Most of the ones I have found on my own were either far to populated, far too large or the villages were completely undefended. Even steadings and villages woul…

So I've got a character who is currently lesser nobility, complete with oaths of fealty, etc... I want for him to gain a small fief. This would be essentially a small village with some surrounding land that he administers, and the right to build some sort of manor there, though he might not start with one. He currently has a 3 point nobility perk and 3 points in wealth. Would you handle this as a special effect of a wealth perk, or would you go so far as to define a base? If you built a base, how would you build it?

What would you use to repel insects or animals, either of the garden variety or the giant type? Mind Control? PRE attack? Illusions or Mental Illusions? Something else? And how would the above interact with those creatures having been summoned instead of stumbled upon or found in their nest / hive / den? - E

So I am past the creative part of building my intro/teaching game and have begun to actually use that abacus and stat out all the NPC's and encounters. Bring the lazy cuss I am I have been grabbing as many of them I can from the 5th Ed books (bonus points if they are in HD files). But count me amazed when I cannot find any generic guards, city watch or anything. Am I blind? Did I miss something? Where are the Fantasy Hero henchmen and "normal" NPC's?
