Lately I've been reading/re-reading some of Lin Carter's Thongor books. (They're fun but not very good.) Anyway, they include Sumia, Thongor's romantic interest, who is a stereotypical Dejah Thoris type Princess. She wanders around like a Fantasy Hero DNPC, without doing much that is useful. This makes her an exception to a group of people (Thongor and his friends) that tends to include various warriors, and even a wizard. She is the only female member of the group. 🙄 I started thinking: how could you make such a character a PC? She has a legitimate background - Exiled Princess (technically Usurped Empress). She's not a Warrior or a Wizard, but something else. …

I'm looking for help with developing a power and choosing the right limitation. The power is called "Mindblade" and allows users to create a weapon (melee or ranged) using its psionic power. The weapon has the same characteristic as a standard weapon of the same type, a mace mindblade has the same properties as a mace and a mindblade lance has the same properties as a lance. The mindblade could be disarmed or damaged as a normal weapon has weight. My idea was to use the standard weapon template and change some of the limitations to reflect the new nature of the weapon. Require strength and required hands to stay the way they are. …

I've never been terribly fond of the Speed Chart and the mechanical effect it has on combat. Its only advantage, to my mind, is that it guarantees that a combatant with SPD 4 acts exactly twice as often as one with SPD 2. The big problem with it is that it encourages the sort of metagaming mindset which allows players to pre-plan their combats, to the grave detriment of the feeling of fast-moving chaotic excitement which combat should have. I've tried a couple of ways to get around this, to make combat less rigidly structured without doing away with the SPD system altogether. The first variation: Random Segment Determination , in which a d12 is rolled and those …

back in 1996 I modified the then current setting for Fantasy Hero (2e, 1990), Western Shores. Adding to it again in 2006. I'm now thinking of updating and improving it to 6e Hero System as I may run another campaign using it. This thread is for feedback and ideas on what I've done so far and what folk might like to see (and if anyone actually would like it to be done). Locations to find this setting: The Western Shores Campaign (1996, 4e Hero System, note the elite level HTML use) The Western Shores (2006, 5e Hero System, some issues with transitioning wiki markup from the RPG.net site) WS:Index (same as above but hosted on the RPG.net wiki) …

This weekend, I was contemplating PD vs ED. My game has always been Fantasy Hero, rarely so much as looking sideways at other genres, and the PD/ED divide always struck me as artificial. Something left over from superheroes, but needless clutter in a fantasy game, where PD and ED are listed separately but typically closely balanced if not identical. My ideas about supers are probably naive, neither reading comics much nor having ever played a supers game, but it seems to me that energy projectors are all about energy (duh!) while bricks and martial artists are all about physical stuff. In other words, PD and ED exist to express and differentiate character archetypes. Ener…

I've been bingeing a lot of Swords and Sorcery recently, and keep running into a lot of other worldy/dream/weird sequences. Even Conan isn't immune (see The Frost Giant's Daughter, The Vale of Lost Women, and others I can't be bothered thinking of). The obvious question is: how would you run this in a game? It's quite a different tone from more "realistic" situations, yet it is so commonly present that it begs to be included. I can see a lot of players and GMs not wanting to do it, but for those who do: how would you handle it?

What would be the best way to make an area magically filled with water so that a radius of water appears and stays there so anyone going into it will have to swim and have the same problems as being under water?

Was wondering if people think it might be a good idea to have Fantasy Hero characters pay points for their equipment. It can be said that it is rather hard to determine the strength of FH characters if their equipment is free. Or is there any other way to better determine the strength of your characters?

This is a write-up for Merlin the Magician adapted from various Arthurian legends, films, and RPG write-ups for D&D. Included is the Hero Designer file and character sheet (5th Edition) in Microsoft Word. Some design notes for your reference: 1) Most of what I read and watched depicted Merlin as a diviner and seer who works through others rather than actively commit direct action. The most common abilities portrayed were his divination to see into the future, ability to move through nature much faster than normal means (those traveling with him also moved faster as a result), and glamour magic (illusions). I increased the END cost for his g…

Comments are welcome Nemesis Anastasia Romanova Background Anastasia was the not so bright apprentice to a great and evil mage(Koschei the deathless) The mage needed a soul he could control to power his iron golem to protect his estate from fairies and other threats During this time the mage added many spells to aid his creation to look normal ,as the times warranted it he needed to disguise her later she became his lover and assassin posing as his apprentice with a wandering eye later the mage died in a lab accident(not her fault) and Anastasia was left without being controlled She is looking to right the wrongs she did while controll…

I recently read Osprey Games' Romance in the Perilous Land that had interesting interpretations of characters from Arthurian romance. Inspired by the work, I developed four re-imagined characters from Arthurian legends. They are the following: 1) Queen Guinevere is a knight. In this incarnation, war has come to Camelot. Initially healing the injured, Guinevere takes a more active role and takes up arms as the casualties rise and the war is not going in Camelot's favor. She still has her secret affair with Sir Lancelot, so I added the disguise and concealment skills that she would likely use. 2) Elaine of Astolat is a knight. This versio…

One of the ideas that has become a big deal in D&D circles is that there shouldn't be inherently Evil races. I'll refrain from ranting about this and cut to the chase. Surely, creating an Evil Race is a very Evil act. The kind of thing that the Evilest of Evils would do, just to be Evil. (And because minions are useful.) So, in other words, if inherently Evil races didn't exist, they would be created! While I came up with this through an independent line of thought, Tolkien had already done it, as you would expect. He described the "creation" of Orcs as one of Morgoth's Most Evil Deeds. Evil races can therefore plausibly exist, and the …

Have seen what is out there but I think there is not enough for me to run my next game, Fantasy HERO in Greyhawk. I want a classic Greyhawk "feel" which means identifying what makes Greyhawk feel like,e Greyhawk without seeking to emulate D&D. I will use this thread to talk out loud what I am thinking about, more than happy for folk to chip in. 🙂 can't promise to follow suggestions or advice but alternative views, at worst, sharpen my thinking and point out things I have not considered. I will add to this as I work things out but would be interested what folk think are essential bits of playing in Greyhawk, the original Gygax sett…

In HERO Designer, when I'm creating a Variable Power Pool, there is a value for "quantity". It costs +5 points for every doubling of this number. I can't find any reference to it in the HD guide or any of the rule books. What is it for? -- Brian

Dears, I’m looking for some support because I’m going to start a really titanic did (at least to me): I’m going to create starting from zero a complete fantasy setting using the 6th edition of Hero System… Furthermore, I have to involve my current RPG party that don’t speak English at all and explain all the rules… Anyway, my main doubt is about the magic system. I know that “Fantasy Hero” handbook proposes a lot of different magic systems but you have to understand that I don’t have time to test the system…Once I have implemented it, I must to be sure that it works and, most important, that it is balanced. The only magic system I know very well is the one of D&…

With fantasy worlds that see undead of various power levels rising from the grave, how might that affect burial customs? It seems like you wouldn’t want any bodies left hanging around to come back as skeletons or zombies, so burning corpses or dissolving them in acid or suchlike would likely become standard practice to avoid having such things happen. Could more powerful undead like ghosts or wraiths then end up becoming more common, taking in more of the dark energies that empower undead? What other effects could the presence of undead cause in societies? Ecologies?

A city is made up of people and so I am delineating some of the personages of the city. Not only the movers and shakers but also some of the more street people. Lets start with the two people who run this town. Any comments and suggestions welcomed!

Hello fine folks, My boys have lately gotten into God of War/ Ragnorak games. Now talking to them, they would be interested in the next time I run some Fantasy Hero to run it Norse style. I do have some resources but I’m always ready to listen to others if they have advice on tailoring generic fantasy to a Norse style game.

So, I have finally conquered my procrastination! I have uploaded templates for creating classic World of Darkness vampires, werewolves, and wraiths, and only 30 years past when such templates would be relevant! In all seriousness, I'm pretty sure I'd uploaded them previously, but I went through the Downloads section looking for my old stuff and the only thing in there was an HDC file for a cWoD Wraith, so they must have been deleted. I've now uploaded correct HDT files for all three. Please note that I haven't done any of the myriad, multiple supernatural powers from the various games -- no Vampire disciplines, Werewolf charms, and Wraith arcanoi -- since that…

Would anyone be able to state what would be the best way for something to be able to steal the skills and memories of something they killed? I had thought of using VPP but you cannot put skills in a VPP.

I have completed and published the digital version of The Jolrhos Codex! Its up on DriveThruRPG in the Hall of Champions section. I hope to have it up here on Hero soon as well as in print. The Codex is the rewrite of my old Fantasy Codex, with doublechecked math, new spells, streamlined layout and content, and specifically built to be for my Fantasy Hero campaign setting rather than generic. Also added are Bard Songs and Priest rituals, as well as campaign rules for building spells. As a result its slimmed down, but has more content. The full spell builds (and NPCS, songs etc) are all in hdc files that are bundled with the book. Because of th…

Created two new (and related) talents for Fantasy Here which would work for both 5th Edition and 6th Edition, and I am checking to see what others think of it. The following are the talents: Armor Mastery I Armor (4 PD/4 ED) (12 Active Points); OIF (-1/2), Must be Aware of Attack (-1/2), Restrainable (-1/2), Only Half as Much as Worn Armor (-1/2), Not verse Critical Hit (-1/4), Not verse AE (-1/4)) 3 Points Armor Mastery II Hardened (+1/4) for up to 36 Active Points of Worn Armor (9 Active Points); OIF (-1/2), Must be Aware of Attack (-1/2), Restrainable (-1/2), Not verse Critical Hit (-1/4), Not verse AE (-1/4) 3 Points …

Here's the fluff as I envision it. Evil-nasty necromancy spell that "prevents" its victim from healing. Natural healing simply doesn't work. Any kind of assisted healing can try to "fight" the spell and get through to heal the victim. If you "win" the fight, the spell is weakened a little, and eventually dissipates. Here's some crunch: every time you try to regain BODY (Paramedics, Heal spells, etc.) there's some kind of Skill vs. Skill contest (I wanted it to be less about "big honkin' Heal spell!" and more about effort). If the Healing side wins, you regain however much BODY and the Spell side gets a little weaker (kinda like Ablative). Eventually the Spell …

I've been taking a look at some 5E Champions material that wasn't updated to the new edition and there's been a lot of great finds so far. As I understand it, the Fantasy HERO and Star HERO lines are part of the Champions timeline (Fantasy set long in the past and Star in between Champions and Galactic Champions), so I thought it would be worthwhile taking a look at some of those books, but I'm not sure which ones to focus on. If I start with Fantasy HERO, since I believe Takofanes originates in one of these settings and he's always been a fun concept, which books would be part of the greater Champions universe? The potential hits I can see looking through the…
