this guy (not me) photo-shopped animal parts together to make some intriguing animals. They are well done, but some are just silly and some of the human ones are a bit twisted. But the lion-chipmnuk, frog-bird, and bird with fangs are certainly worth seeing. might be good pictures for a fantasy race. http://www.humandescent.com/index2.shtml

So we're about to start a campaign and we're trying to decide on a cost for books when I realize 1 sheet of paper costs 8 SP and a small reference library costs 400 SP. Since a 50 page unbound book (with a very generous author) seems like a poor "reference library" to me I assume one of these costs is a typo. As a group we discussed a reasonable book price in a fantasy setting with no industrialization a good formulae was a SP per page of print + cost of pages(paper, vellum, or parchment) + 10 SP for the binding and cover = book cost Thoughts? Comments?

Have any of you come up with derogatory names for the different races in your fantasy games? When I consider how much Elves hate drow and humans hate orcs, it seems only natural they'd develop. For that matter, the races might even grow to like some slanderous titles after a while. I don’t mind being called a redneck or a yank, for example. I guess that means they aren’t all that slanderous. Here are a few I just thought up Elves addressing: Humans___Beardies Drow_____Little Blue Brothers Dwarves__Mole-man

FH says that Knockback is an optional rule that usually isn't used in a fantasy setting. Then, there are several creatures, both in FH and the playtest of MMM, that have varying degrees of Knockback Resistance. What do you do with those creatures? It seems like wasting points, buying a defense against something you'll never encounter. Do you subtract those points? Does it instead translate into some kind of Knockdown defense? If you only allow some spells and abilities to be purchased with Does Knockback, do you give a price break on Knockback Resistance, since you won't see it that often? Thanks for any help.

I'm running a Fantasy Hero game at an event at our local library. The event is call Fantasy Game day, and it is an event to get teens interested in reading and math. I plan to run a session of Fantasy Hero there, and I need an adventure idea for a group of teens with little or no experience in RPGs and none with Hero System. Thanks for any ideas, Mike

Ok, I've finally had time to give both of these a good read through and I must say I am very pleased. I know FH is a big book but I was surprised at how much is jammed in there. I was worried about the Grimoire being tied to the official FH setting but the way it was done works nicely, it has flavor because of the setting but remains generic enough to be useful even if I don't use the official setting (some of the Starhero supplements had me worried on the direction DoJ was taking HERO). Far superior to the old spellbook and magic items which I always found boring. If this style is used for other books you won't hear me complaining about official campaign material. If the…

Magic Item Challenge

I want to plant a plot device in my group. I want to play off the weaknesses of one of my PC's, who is obsessed with magic. So I am going to present them with an item that they clearly should have nothing to do with, and see if their greed gets the better of them. The item is going to be a small crystal ball that's obvious power is giving a power boost to magic based powers, say 40AP's worth. The inobvious power is that it will be a reverse scrying stone, that is, the villian that gifted the item can use it as a spy tool, AND as a memorized teleport point. T The bad part needs to be invisible to detect magic, but there should probably be some way for them t…

I just want to know how many people prefer low fantasy to high fantasy. I used to love high fantasy, but my interest in it gradually declined. I enjoy historical fantasy; ie set in the real world with little or no magic. I'm talking about stuff like Ivanhoe or the Father Cadfael mysteries. Even movies with wildly inaccurate stories about real people such as Shogun or Braveheart qualify. I'm pretty sure I'm in the minority here, but I can't be the only one who enjoys it.

It seems kind of inappropriate to me. It looks kind of neat, but it almost seems more super-heroish. Not trying to slam the actual quality of the art, which is excellent, but more the composition and selection of it. I think I like the 4th edition one better.

I was toying with adapting Birthright to Hero and was wondering if others had tried to convert the realm actions? I have already checked out This Birthright Site but I was really looking for the domain stuff more than the character building.

Does anyone know of any books, online sites, or other sources that detail Ancient Rome? I would need something around the height of the games (990 A.D.; I'm guessing on the date here.) The reason I need it is because I have gotten involved with a Fantasy Hero game that uses Ancient Rome as its basis. I just wanted to do some research. I know someone will say, "Look at your local library." Well, I KNOW to do that. What I am looking for is a specific book or source that you may know about, that you think is good. I thank you all in advance for any suggestions. ~Shadowjax

I am building a villian with a set of special powers, but the END used to power them can only come from an END reserve. How do i show that in the powers' formula? Do i put the limitation on the power (i.e. "only powered by ER") or do i limit the END reserve (i.e. "only usable for 'X' powers")?

I'm toying with a campaign in which magic comes from the gods -- but not in the "D&D" way. What happens is, you must satisfy some requirement of a god, and if you do, he teaches you a spell. It might be one you ask for, or it might be one he thinks you should learn. However, once you learn the spell, it's yours. You don't have to pray to recover it; you cast it normally as your END permits. To further complicate things, the gods have an agreement: no god will grant a magician more than a single spell until *all* the gods have granted him one. I'm thinking seven gods, and I have some ideas for what spheres of influence each should have. But as you might …

OK - most people are familiar with a druids ability to assume the form of any animal (with size limitations/etc). This ability cannot be easily done as now written in the hero system. Basic info. So how can I do it? I don't want to go the "you start out with one shape (or 4) and can learn more later as you gain experience (and divine favor/etc)" route, and shapechange doesn't cut it. Either transform usable only on self, or multiform with some kind of advantage (variable SFX came to mind, but I think the +1/2 is too low, way too low). As a transform, I figured : 4d6 Major transform (body), standard effect (so 12 body, enough for an average non-fighter…

We had an interesting discussion in last night's chat that I thought I'd raise here as a way of "continuing" it. As some of you know, in my "copious spare time" I've been plinking away at some more arcana, with an eye toward publishing another FH Grimoire at some point. Such a book wouldn't include expansions of the existing FHG arcana, but all-new arcana. That raises the question of: what doesn't the FHG cover that you'd like to see covered? So far I have written up: Arcanomancy Black Magic Rune Magic Shamanism Song Magic I have plans to write up Chaos Magic, Monster Magic, Naming Magic, deity-specific divine magic, and a couple others. …

I've never seen any of the Turakian campaign setting and I'm not necessarily looking for yet another campaign setting, but I think its magic system is the one I want to use. I've had the Fantasy Hero book since Gencon and picked up the Grimoire over the weekend so I've been guessing at the way it works. Please correct me if I'm wrong. Basically, I would have a wizard buy a Endurace reserve, which I'll just call a mana pool or something similar, for say 20 points actual cost that would be 10 mana rechargable once per round. Then they might buy a couple spells from the grimoire possibly at a 3rd of the cost per the suggestion in the grimoire. Lastly they would buy one …
