Of late I have taken to converting the mountain of notebooks full of materials from campaigns and adventures past into digital format. Being the glutton for punishment that I am, I have not been satisfied with simply scanning everything and storing it that way. Instead I have been slowly retyping everything, formatting it, redrawing the maps (then scanning them in, madness, right?), etc. These notes span a multitude of different systems and genres. Most of them, as I have been working through them, I keep thinking to myself, "Self, why don't you convert this to Hero, it would be a far superior product in the end...?" Obviously that's not always true, but it has made me wo…

Already posted to the HD forum, but I thought I'd ask here as well. I tried to use HD for 5th edition to make a couple of FH characters and well I need to know how to do the following: 1) Equipment- Especially magic items that are independent (-2) of the NPC but I want to list as part of his stats 2) Familiarity as a power- The magic systems I am planning to use allow a familiairity (1 to 2 points) to stand if for the power. But I want to list the power later so show what this Fam bought. Example: 7 Basic Running: Running +5" (6"/21" total), x4 Noncombat (15 Active Points); Extra Time (Delayed Phase, Only to…

Just curious, since I have been asking about magic a lot, to go to the sword / weapon swingers in a campaign. So what are some of the styles you have? Like the Tiger Fang style (double daggers) The Butterfly style (great sword) The Diamond Mind style ( rapier like longsword )

Too lazy to look it up. What value would you give for "only for movement" on Dex? Either NCM or CBT.

I've noticed that a lot of spells have common limitations. Obviously, taking advantage of this to hose hostile casters would be a good idea. So, ways to do it?

This is a follow up question to the side effects question. Now I own a fair bit of Fantasy Hero stuff including the NPC books for Turakian Age. One element that I REALLY dislike is the inflated skill rolls on magic skills. Yeah I'll buy up the skill to 26- because even at minus 8 I still have a 18- roll. So why even have a RSR skill then? At that time the points saved from the RSR limitation are being spent just to remove the limitation. So they want it so that 1 time in 216 they may get a failure. RSR should be a factor. A limitation that isn't limiting, well how did the saying go? So question, do you limit the RSR? Like an 18- sounds gr…

The player characters aren't kings, barons or other army/city/big scale leaders yet but they are involved in complex conflicts which take place at their social level. Does anyone have any experience or good ideas for such a situation?

Can you add any more? Or add to the list with your own ideas. In the Wyrmian Mtns is a set of caverns filled with strange creatures. If you can make it to the centre and solve the puzzle it will open to a chamber with items of beauty and power! In the Goddess Woods in the North part of Kern is a Stone Tree that can be used to make wands, staves, potions, salves and handles to items of power. In the Gefting Sea is an Island supposedly that of a bloodthirsty pirate who was cursed. Now the Island is covered in mists and those who come near are attacked by the skeletons of the pirates. There the Pirate Lord, a powerful skele…

At this point I am basically asking questions out of curiosity To what extent are your games about exploring "places of mystery" ("dungeons"), exploring the world, epic quests, politics/intrigue, romance or whatever? OK, partly I am fishing for things I might be interested in, because endless dungeon crawling bores me to sleep, and in any case HERO isn't the best system for that, in my opinion.

My question is: how much information about a setting do you need to create a character?

The thread on farmland needed to support a city elsewhere on this forum got me wondering, what's the population of the largest urban area in the fantasy world setting or type of setting you adventure in? E.g. most recent, most frequent, or preferred? A bit of discussion as to why you decided on that number would also be welcome. I generally prefer bog-standard pseudo-medieval fantasy worlds, with a decent representation of non-humans in variety and numbers, and fairly common but rarely powerful magic. For such I set my top city at between 500,000 - 600,000 people within its immediate environs. My research suggests that's an historically justifiable number for …

A question for GMs and setting designers: when you are naming people and places, what do you do? Even if you are using a published source, you will end up needing more names. How do you deal with the range between Qwertyuio and Bob? One is gibberish, the other mundane. Where do you locate suitable names in this range, and how do you tell the difference? When you steal names, where do you steal them from? And so on... An example: The Cat of (name). In the Great Temple of (name), there is always a Cat living within the Most Holy Place. Since it appears to suffer no harm from trespassing in the Most Holy Place, the priests of the …

Basically I'd like to know how much land does it take to support a midieval town? So how many sq mi (or sq km for the rest of the world) will it take to feed and support a town? For a good beginning assume a population of 10000 to a max of about 50000!

I'm making a short list of magic Items that might be important to my setting. I'm short a couple though. So far I've got: An amulet which provides magical protection, and boosts the abilities of wizards A talisman that does the same only more so. A sword that does normal magic sword stuff, and also is required if you want to conquer the Big City. A ring of invisibility. All of these are potentially campaign shaking. They aren't just casual loot. But I want a couple more. Any ideas?

Yeah; that's not much of a title. Sorry about that. So let me back up a bit: Some years ago, I made mention of a few things that were more-or-less standards in my (rare) high fantasy games. Of these things, my favorites are the Office of the Public Scribe and the Torchbearers' Guild. I don't actually think I went into any detail on the Guild, save how it came to be, but having told that tale I thought "hey, you know what? Here we are complaining that there aren't enough things for new players or enough inexpensive things that folks can use to get their own juices flowing.... " So I thought I'd write these organizations up under the…

Well I have an Empire. I have a partially explored mountain range to the north and south. Large forests east and west. Past the northern mountains are a desert and after that a grassland. Also a Jungle area to the north west and a LONG mountain chain running north south. Now I am running no elves or dwarves, just humans, but occasionally you want an opponent that the players can bash on. Usually this is .... orcs. But I want to get away from that. So I thought what other enemies come from mythology that I can use, and I came up with one. Used by Norse and Celtic stories. Giants! Even if I make the just 2x bigger than humans they'll have …

New player talking to NPC in starting city of new campaign. NP admiring a castle- “so how old is this structure?” NPC “Well according to records the foundations were laid 100 AD (After Desolation)” NP “Seriously? WOW! Was it ever taken? NPC “Well it was almost taken by the Northern Wasters in 4000 AD, but it has been rebuilt since then!” NP “4000? You mean 400?” NPC “No 4000 AD.” NP OOC to DM --- UMMM what is the current date? DM 6250 AD NP ????????? I noticed this while perusing TVTropes about Medieval Stasis, where a setting seems to think that making events go into THOUSANDS of years, an…

(Writing this from memory / without the aid of books.) Most Fantasy Hero weapon writeups are built with Costs 0 END(+1/2). Adding STR to the weapon damage should normally be prorated for the cost of the Advantage. But they don't; +5 STR over the STR Min is +1 DC. END Cost for Strength in Fantasy Hero is 1 END per 5 Active Points, instead of 1 END per 10 Active points. If the weapon's Advantage, and the doubled END cost, were dropped, how well would this work out?

I was recently reading a site where they were commenting on how in Greyhawk there were multiple pantheons among the humans and that to him, this made the setting more real. I guess it is like the Greek/Egyptian/others, where there could be multiple sky gods (Horus and Zeus). So how many of you have multiple pantheons in your games? How did you set it up? Do you feel it added or detracted from your setting!

I just found some of my old work on writing up Middle-earth races in HERO terms. I have the Elf Package Deals, but I don't have the Human Cultural Package Deals. Please let me know if there are any corrections to be made. https://docs.google.com/document/d/1ecQlJl70uPpFnyIrzLWuuNAVe8VoWZ8EQ4BGyhl7pn4/edit?usp=sharing

We have the spell users, what ever the flavour you have chosen. But what do you give the warriors/ rogues so that they don't feel overshadowed. I have been in games with both, A ) a DND 2nd edition game where we quickly learned that warrior had durability (HP) and great saves B ) a Palladium game where we learned that the raw power of a caster totally overshadowed any similar leveled warrior and that the argument "But you get magic items to compensate!" was.... yeah! So to those GMs of fantasy..... How do you keep the non-casters feeling special? I am looking at thing like Tuala Morn's Warrior feats or abilities like 25% Dam. Red. (only when a…

I've been mulling over an idea of late and thought it might be interesting for others to cogitate on as well ( or give their experiences if they have tried it). For martial based characters, it is often enough to just pay currency and receive a power that can be used as long as they can refrain from losing it. The use cost is a minimal outlay in a weapon familiarity. They receive a bonus to damage simply for being "strong". What would a magic system look like that followed a similar vein? Purchasing spells with currency is not a completely foreign idea in RPGs, to be sure. But how would *you* make it work in Hero?

So I am into considerations of prevalent low level magic in the new setting I am working on. There are lots of restrictions on magic as far as keeping it from being overwhelming in combat, but even low level magic can have lots of side effects in the economy and other areas like infrastructure. So in this setting I am working to figure out the best way to create earth based spells for repairing or creating roads. First thoughts: Change Environment with long lasting, either as damage to the high spots or as TK or both (seems... too much change for CE?) Transform (rough road to smooth) Telekinesis Tunnelling? (Seems wonky) At the…
