I wanted to ask the community on their ideas of how one would go about creating a magic system and spells based on the merging of "steampunk" level of technology and arcane magic. VPPs Gadget Pools may be the way to go, but I have never liked VPPs. Would one just create spells as normal with the standard Limitations such as Gestures, Incantations etc., but with the requirement of a Focus Limitation (Technological Item), with Activation Rolls and possibly Jammed or Burnout and maybe Extra Time (building the Focus)? Or is there a better way to do this and simulate the "steampunk" genre of magic?

Hagakure chapter 2 by Yamamoto Tsunetomo translated by William Scott Wilson. Samurai Determination Healing 10d6 to Body +Ressureaction Trigger (only when character reaches 0 body or less)+1/4, Self Only -1/2, charges 1 --2, Side Effect: 4d6ka Side effect (occures whenever the character does one specific act) When he has made one final attack or leaves combat -3/4 BC:120 AC:150 RC:35 I did this while comtemplating whether i wanted to convert over my Feudal Japamese setting over to hero.It was in Oriental adventures but i found that it and d20 wherent really that good at simulating the kind of feudal japan i wanted. Hope this doesnt look to bad Its sp…

I just saw that flick last night, and I enjoyed it, even if it has more cheese than an extra large pizza. Definitely it qualifies as a fantasy; the fact that people can bring their katanas in an airplane without a fuss is proof enough. Not to mention taking lots of damage without dying. Anyway, here's the idea. It's set in modern-day earth, with all the modern-day conveniences: electricity, good plumbing, medicine, cars, etc. The difference is that people duke it out with swords and other melee weapons found in FH and UMA. That is, when they're not doing any kung fu (or any other style) fighting. That leads to a couple of questions: First, what happened to all t…

If I may ask: I've noticed (more in Champions than Fantasy Hero, actually) several references to both qabbalah and the qlippoth. Now, I have read references to both of these before, but does anyone know of any good books or links that can give a better explanation of them? And, out of curiosity, just why did the developers use them? It's not like I'm bothered, mind, but these are kind of unusual choices. How many gamers actually know all that much about Jewish mysticism?

I have a question concerning familiars for mages. I want the mage to buy a familiar as follower, so he has to pay 1 Point per 5 points of the familiar. So far so good. But if you take for example a raven as in the beastiary as a basis with it's total cost of -12 ! and apply ther familiar template to it ( worth of 74 points ) is the resulting cost then really 62 points -> Have to pay 12 points for it? And if so, would the raven without the template cost nothing at all?? Thank's for your help...

Hello everyone. I read the (dated) thread on the VPP in a FH setting and wanted to touch on a few salient points of the conversation to see what everyone thinks. I have a few players who are familiar with AD&D (2e and 3e) so I want my magic system to be familiar to them. HERO gives me this flexibility. Basically I want a Vancian magic system in FH. I think Killer Shrike hit some really good points that got lost in the general arguing back and forth. Obviously if we are emulating a Vancian system it is most definitely not a Cosmic power pool or anything of the sort. So here goes my understanding of Killer Shrike's VPP for a Vancian system: …

I was responding to a mailing list psot of gifts that make you more attractive to the rcipient when it occured to me that one could make a smiliar gift to present to a spouse (such as an enchanted wedding ring) to improve their fertility. That led to some general thoughts about the role of fertility magic in a fantasy world. it's hard to represent in agem terms because the concept is rarely dealt with, but it a world where magic is known and plentiful 9or at least commonly known) magic to improve fertility would be a very important concept. This can apply on several levels. For humans, kings and other nobels depend for the srurvival of their lines and the stability o…

Has anyone taken any of the spells from Slayers, the classic fantasy anime comedy, and adapted them to FH? I am terrible at calculating spells, but I was wondering how one would buld not only the powerful attack spells like the Dragon Slave, Giga Slave and Ra Tilt, but also the minor cantrips like the spell Lina Iberfse uses to attrack the fish ion the stream to her hook. I also wonder if there is a way to write up the power to restore lost END by consuming food -- this would certainly explain Lina's enromous appetite, and she probably burns a lot of END on a daily basis casting spells. Or maybe she just likes food one heck of a lot.

ok so im building a wizard through a multi power for all of his spells. Im taking limitations on the multipower itself. If the multipower takes longer than 0 phase to switch out do i put extra time on it. If yes I already have extra time on it because all of the spells take delayed phase. Does this matter. Should I take it two times. Basically the guy can switch his spells by meditating for a phase or two. Thanks Isaac

I believe Badger3k posted this in a thread back a while but I don't think anyone really answered him so I wanted to start a fresh thread on the topic. Other games like D&D simply allow the GM to award players with "treasure" at their leaisure. This has always been the thorn in my side with Fantasy Hero. Those points for magic items always have to have come from somewhere. So I handle it the following way...... First I altered the Independant rule. If you take this limitation for whatever reason you don't actually ever lose those points. Instead, once the item is destroyed they go into a "pool" if you will, that slowly returns to you over time.…

Does anyone have any suggestions on a reasonably balanced way to use the FHG spells with a narrower set of Arcana Skills. For example, only having six Arcana skills where Enchantment and Thaumaturgy are combined into one. Using combined existing Arcana would prevent a GM from having to go through the entire FHG and determine what spells should go into the Black Magic Arcana. It would be much easier to be able to say that Black Magic has all the Necromancy and Sorcery Spells. (Please note: I have only skimmed through the Grimoire, so the examples I chose may not really be very good combinations; I only used them to illustrate what I mean).

In FHG, all the spells have many options. Are these considered variations on the same spell that can be modified as the charcter grows more experienced or totally different spells that must be learned? If a character has the ordinary version of Create Light and wants to learn the Strong Option, does she need to buy the Strong Version at 1/3 or the 8 CP cost or just pay the difference between that cost and what she has already paid on the Create Light spell? I would think that one just pays the difference, but on FHG page 4 under Options, it seems to indicate that the optional versions are specially developed and often have their own names.

Do you use package deals in your campaign? Are they required or optional? That is, if a player wants to play a dwarf, does he have to use the dwarf package, or do you let him design his own? Does anyone offer different racial packages for different human groups? I'm thinking about having 3-4 different human ancestry packages with slight differences in characteristics. Do they get any special benefits for taking a package? In earlier editions, a package deal gave bonus points, but this has apparently been eliminated... so there's no real incentive to take a package. Do you offer an incentive as a house rule? I'm considering allowing disadvantages in pac…

There's a fairly positive review of Fantasy Hero in this week's (October 18-October 25) Pyramid Magazine. Written by Ross Winn, it essentially says that there are genuine positives and real negatives, but the positives seem to win out. A brief quote from the review: "Even with its flaws, Fantasy Hero is an amazing book. Let us be completely clear on this point. Not only does the book attempt a task no other RPG book has ever accomplished, it clearly succeeds on several levels. Unfortunately, the encyclopedic nature of the finished product is its most disappointing aspect. There is both so much here, and so clearly much more to be covered." Bill.

I just did, and the verdict is... COOL! I like it a lot. Forget what I said in a previous thread about having mixed feelings. It's not quite what I expected, but it's better. I was pleasantly surprised to find it included a few magic items and potions. There are a lot of really cool spell ideas too. So, kudos to Steve! I can't want for Minion and Marauders. BTW I don't think I ever said how much I like Fantasy Hero. Err, maybe I did, but it bears repeating. Excellent stuff! Mike

Any advice, tips, tricks, etc.? I tried using Mr Killer Shrike's character conversion notes as a springboard, but my 2-hp kobold ended up with 10 BODY, and...that...seemed...wrong. Sure, I can just drop the BODY to, like, 3 or something (kobolds fall apart when subjected to harsh language or exposed to sub-par service at the drive-through). But has anyone any guidelines for doing such with other critters... ...or is it me & HERO Designer against the world? You know, like when the Russians invaded in '82?* Thanks in advance! *NOTE: This may have been made up.

ok so ive got a group of basically new people. The one person who has experience isnt enjoying himself with plain gaming so hes created a character who tinkers with magic and magical items. The thing is im not really sure how to run this for him. Im wondering if theres any sites out there that really go into detail about creation and identification of magic items [NOT JUST GAME RULES] basically im thinking about running it like hes identifing chemicals in a chem class he just has to keep doing stuff till he knows what hes got. Im looking for ideas. Magic is always left simple and it happens because it happens i need something that tells the why and how alittle bit more. …

Okay, i've made this FH Blood Mage; he can power his spells using his blood; i mean, all his "spells" are with Concentration, Gesture or Incantation, RSR (Magic Skill) an Side Effect (minor to major). Some have even Reduced End (no END) (some have'nt this advantage to simulate spells that BOTH fatigue and use his blood) (I am the GM, and this is a pregenerated PC for an adventure in a Con) So, i'm building this "summon blood golem" spell; With Concentration (½ DCV, -½), Gestures (-½), Reduced END (No END, +½), RSR (Magic Skill, -¼) and Side Effect (Major, only self, only when activated; +½) [1d6+1 Killing Attack on self, NND, No Range] So with 20 points…

I've been thinking a lot about how I want to do magic. The thing that always stops me cold are trying to define a set of spell colleges. But, I really like the Ars Magica system. If you're not familiar with Ars Magica, it is based on five Techniques and ten Forms. To cast a fireball you could Create Fire, but to make fire jump from a torch you could Control Fire, and to create a cold environment you might Destroy Fire. TECHNIQUES*: Create, Destroy, Transform, Control, Perceive (detect). FORMS: Air, Animal (nonsentient forms), Body (sentient humanoid forms), Earth, Fire, Illusion, Magic (includes spirits), Mind (thought, emotion, and soul), Plant, Water. …

I am confused as to how the Create spells in the enchantment college are calculated. Some of them have are based on Active Pts = Real Pts in the item, as described in Fantasy Hero p.279. Some of them seem to be based on Active Pts = 2x Real Pts in the item (Armor of Unseen Step, Dragonskin Armor, etc.) Some of them have are apparently based on Active Pts = 1 + 2x Real Pts in the item (Winter's Mail, Boots of the Cricket, Robes of Invisibility) Some are apparently based on Active Pts = 2 x (Real Pts + 1) in the item (Necklace of Eloquence, Ring of Deadly Touch, Ring of Deadly Illumination) And hte Ring of Penetrating Sight is AP+1. I don't see…

Working with a system that a lot of people prefer not to name, I am transferring weapon properties to FH. Here's one I'd like opinions on - its from the "under-negative light" book - the stalactite property: The text: This property is normally reserved for bladed weapons. A stalactite blade resembles a long, thin stalactite instead of a standard blade. The difference in appearance does not affect the weapon statistics in any way. A critical hit with the weapon can turn the target to stone. OK - the meat and drink: 6d6 Major Transform, Target into stone, [90] Reduced END (0) (+1/2) Conditional Power: Only on critical Hit (-2) No Conscious Co…
