I'm also considering (among everything else) running a low/swords & sorcery fantasy game. In fact, I really want to run one set in Lankhmar. In addition, I'm intending to run most games as stand-alones (all set in the same world, with the same characters, but not running over from week to week). I'm envisioning players largely being members of the Thieves Guild (or the Brotherhood of Slayers) and having everyone being relatively combat-capable on their own (so teamwork is an option, rather than a necessity). Also, as members of the guild, most "adventures" will really be more like jobs, assignments, or 'free-lance opportunities' so that it isn't unreasonable that…

My gnome, Ramne (shortened to Rom by my party because aparently the two sylables were to hard to remember), is a heavy drinker, though quite resistant to alcohol's effects. To simulate this (because I was not allowed to buy life support: immunity to alcohol) my dm said I could increasew my CON roll vs the effects of alcohol by +1 fro every three points I spend. I'm new to the game and all, but isn't this a little expensive? -Preston

A phisical Limitation for mages 5 Points: cannot cast spells while wearing armor with the Real Armor Limitation of 7 Def rating or higher 10 Points: cannot cast spells while wearing armor with the Real Armor Limitation of 5 Def rating or higher 15 Points: cannot cast spells while wearing armor with the Real Armor Limitation of 3 Def rating or higher 20 Points: cannot cast spells while wearing armor with the Real Armor Limitation of 1 Def rating or higher (Essentially a no Armor limitation). This still allows the Bracers, Cloaks, Robes Etc.. but keeps the plate and chain off of the spell huckers What do you guys think?

I have seen a lot of discussion that a mage purchasing spells. I am not sure I understand the problem. I have had many mages in games, and they all paid for their spells. With any level of experience, they quickly started to outstrip the growth of the fighters. I just don’t see that the mages end up power poor. Also, the whole idea a fighter only spends a couple of points on a WF and uses a sword is not what happens. That fighter buys marital arts, or skill levels, and usually honkin’ stats. In my games they spend at least 30 points on fighter related stuff. Just like the 30 or so points spent by the mages. I just don’t see it as a problem.

I interesting question was raised about buying life support for intense heat and if that would stop a dragons breath or not. Seems a little cheap for such a gain but does start one's gears a grinding

In the campaign I'm planning, all spells require Gestures and Incantations. However, some skilled wizards can "simulcast" two spells at once by weaving the Gestures and Incantations from each together just right. It can be any two spells, provided they both take the same amount of time to cast, but all the individual spells still require Gestures and Incantations and characters can't legally activate multiple Powers with Gestures and Incantations at the same time. Ideas? I would prefer "by-the-book" game-legal methods, of course. Thanks.

Pretty great isn't it? Who is it that deserves our worship/praise/etc. for this fine artwork? In case you haven't seen it:

I see a couple of arcane spell conversions. Didn't know if anyone worked on clerics and druids.

Did anyone ever post a HERO writeup of the movie Legolas from the LOTR films? I'm curious to see two things. 1. How high a DEX you would give him, and.... 2. How to write up some of the amazing things he can do with a bow and arrows (including using an arrow as a melee weapon).

I realize that 2 skill levels made be traded for 1DC, but do any of you GMs allow higher dex characters to transfer OCV for DCs, and how much OCV, the same 2 or more, and do you require the same number of DCVs to be swapped. For example, if i have a 25 dex char in a campaign where the average is 15-18 dex, giving me 8 ocv/dcv vs 5-6 ocv/dcv, can i drop down to a 6 ocv/8 dcv or 6ocv/ 6 dcv to add 1 DC to my damage. THOUGHTS?

I don't know if this has been answered, but I wondering what groups of spells were actually in the Grimoire. I was sure I saw alchemy and necromancy, but what else? I am wondering as I am working on my campaign and would like to know what may already be "done", since my buying the book is a forgone conclusion. Thanks. Nightshade

Hey Herophiles.... Myself and a friend are about to run a fantasy hero campaign, and we want our divine magic system to be based on faith somehow. We thought about using BOECV for a lot of the spells, to capture the "success based on opponent's weak will" sort of thing, but after taking another look at it, it doesn't really work. Our second thought was to have some sort of opposed skill roll, like a "faith" power skill for divine spellcasters. However, we thought this should probably be an opposed skill roll against the target's faith, or something similar to that. The "requires a skill roll" disad in the book doesn't really mention opposed skill rolls. Anyway, I wa…

My gnome, Ramne, hit a ratman/wererat, 32" away, who was running at full tilt, from a second story window. Possible? The same gnome is also impulsive (phycological disadvantage) and, when comming upon a goblin encampment, thought it would be interesting to see what would happen if he hit one of the 60 or so goblins. I rolled a self imposed ego roll and failed, thus flinging a sling bullet at one of the goblins. I was the only character in the group to suffer a point loss when the dm tallied points for the game at the end, even when another character had followed the afore mentioned wererat alone into the forrest at full speed (thusly getting jumped and nearly killed,…

What would it be like ot build a game around the standard fantasry tropes, but with superhuman power levels for PCs? Superpowers would be magic. Characters with extreme Characteristics would have dragons blood, giants blood or be related to gods. If you wnated a magic sword you'd buy it with your character points as a focus -- but that sword could chop through boulders. Only wizards and clerics would be able to cast spells, but they could weave powerful dweamors indeed. The PCs would be the greatest adventurers in the world -- and thus face the greatest challenges. They might indeed be a match for a dragon -- but what if they had to face an ARMY of dragons? And …

If any of you have read the Ars Magica magic system, and like it, than you might like this concept. It's actually been a while since I read it, so I doubt it's that close, but I've borrowed some of the concepts. I imagine that when any mage goes through the process of learning to manipulate magic, they begin with easy spells and work their way up to more complicated ones. Along the way, the begin to grasp the fundimentals of the theory behind spell design. Spells are simply invocations of a combination of magical effects that have been broken down into a formulaic shortcut. As a mage practices a spell, he gets better at it. Soon, the gestures and incantations and men…

I just finished watching Fellowship of the Ring for the 6th time on DVD, and I was wondering if anyone here had ever put together a 5th Edition version of the demon? I've got a magic-based Champions game coming up soon, and this might be just the ticket for the final bad guy. My players are unlikely to read this particular forum. To put it bluntly, that thing was incredible! I've probably seen literally dozens of paintings and drawings of the Balrog in the 31 years since I first read LotR, but Peter Jackson and his merry men did it perfectly. I wouldn't have changed a single detail.

What size of campaign worlds do people play in? Do they have a couple empires, a single empire (or even city), or are they much bigger than that? My fantasy world is enormous (over 60 empires), with my primary continent about the size of Eurasia and Africa combined. However, I don't know that everyone wants a world that large. I like it, but I am prejudiced Just looking for perspective. Nightshade

There was some discussion on the boards about the Two-Weapon Fighting skill, and how its cost is inefficient as compared to Combat Skill Levels with Sweep. Some optional remedies were suggested on the FAQ page: These optional benefits for TWF also appear in FH5 on page 96. Since I like the idea of TWF (despite its questionable historical realism), and do want to encourage players to take it instead of CSLs with Sweep, I’m inclined to allow both abilities. But some additional rules need to be placed around the second ability to spell it out more clearly. Whenever performing a maneuver that could be part of a TWF combination, the player must declare …

I am looking at creating some spells and wanted to get some ideas on how others would do it. These are flame based spells that are intended to do damage, but only in certain situations. Both would have the SFX of heating up metal. The first spell would damage those who are wearing metal armor or have large amounts of metal on their person or in their clothes. So far, this seems to be an NND, except that NND cannot use lack of something as a defense. Next would be a heat metal spell on metal handled weapons. The desire would be to either a) have the user of the weapon drop it or take damage for continuing to hold it. NND was again my idea adding the limitation …

For me, the particular form that magic takes in the campaign setting suggests the method for spell buying in the campaign, e.g., VPPs, MPs, ECs, point-buys, or other. Each of these methods have particular issues associated with them, for better or worse. For VPPs, my issue is the vast amount that has to be dealt with to run VPPs: this includes "free" spells - alternative methods are necessary to control learning new spells, as well as many issues raised in controlling VPPs. For both VPPs and MPs, the Active Point limits are an issue, because it makes it difficult to create powerful ritual magic or certain basic constructs that while they are not overpowering, t…

Being a fan of a more lethal game system, I'm thinking of changing the weapons charts for my upcoming campaign. Basically my desire is that if an average joe gets hit with a broadsword he stands a better than average chance to get killed. This would mean that I need at least the potential to do (approximately) 10 body with a broadsword being used by joe swordsman. To acomplish this I'm considering raising the DC of all weapons by one. I toyed with bumping them two DC's but I think that would be excessive. Comments? Feedback? Has anyone ever done this?

In another of many questions I have been asking on campaign building recently: What about magic? How much time do you spend to create the magic. Do you create all of the spells? Just create guidelines? A little of both? How do you plan on using the Fantasy HERO Grimoire? Personally, I like having many types of magic, each connected to special effect. However, I also like the idea that magic is consistent in some aspects and not in others. For example, all of my spells are divided into groups, such as Necromancy, Abjuration, Totemic, Alchemy, etc. Every group requires the use of a different skill roll and is fed using an endurance reserve. All spells…

I am hoping to convert the Al-Qadim game setting to Hero. I do not agree with the cleric, here is the spells I get today setup. I want to make divine magic more mysterious. Not all preists have it, and even non-preist may get some (the gods do work in mysterious ways). I was thinking to use a VPP to model the effects, with a No Concsious Control (divine will) disad. Has anyone done this? How did it work? What should I look out for? Any advice appreciated. Thank you
