I'm potentially going to be starting up a FH campaign after a multi-year hiatus. I fortunately have several months to prepare, which is good because one of the things that I was never happy with previously was my magic systems, so I'm scrapping them wholesale. I have 3 ideas. Magic is either Wizardry, Earthpower, or Divine. For those of you well read, I'm drawing inspiration from the Chronicles of Thomas Covenant for Earthpower, and the Fionvar Tapestry and others for Wizardry. Divine power I'm drawing from the Deed of Paksennarrion mainly. Plus some ideas I picked up here in the few days I've been lurking. First is Wizardry. A Wizard buys two things. T…

In the Monsters, Minions, and Marauders thread, someone brought up the idea of tailoring monsters around the fears and concerns of other races, specifically coming up with a vampire that would scare an elf. I was thinking about that, and I came up with a couple of ideas. I haven’t done stats and exact powers so they can be customized, not because I’m feeling lazy. These are based more or less on the standard Tolkien/D&D interpretations of these races; your mileage may vary. If I’ve duplicated something out of fiction or gaming, I apologize. The uvanmia is thought to be a demon loosed from hell specifically to torment the elves in revenge for some long-ago…

I'm trying to create a spell that will give a temporary OCV bonus to a particular weapon. So, for example, you cast the spell on the weapon and it gets +3 OCV for a few minutes or some such. But I'm not quite sure how to put it together. Normally to boost something for a few minutes you'd use Aid, so nearest I came up with was 2d6 OCV Aid where each 2 points rolled gives +1 OCV (as a 2 point CSL). But it doesn't feel right giving the weapon CSLs. I'm actually tempted to dump the idea of boosting the weapon and just make it a DEX Aid on the wielder (for OCV only), but giving the boost to the weapon is more in the flavour of my magc system. Any ideas?

In some medieval worlds, there is a ruling noble class and a massive peasant underclass who are little more than slaves. This has enormous potential for social abuse, as the American experience with slavery demonstrates. If the local lord begins to abuse his priveleges by doing things like killing peasantry at random, claiming the first night with the new bride of every single marriage in his manor, or making serfs fight to the death for his sport, what can the peasantry do to bring him back in line? Historically, peasant revolts always failed (but occurred frequently) because the rebels had much poorer training and equipment than their opponents. But if some peasant…

Can I take the obvious inaccesable focus limitation for a follower if it is tied to a magic ring worn? The maiden Julianna (built on 75 points plus 75 points disadvantages) is protected by an iron golem (120 points plus 75 points disadvantages) whose commands she gives through the power of a ring (60 Active Points. -1/2 OIF. Total Cost: 40 Points). -Preston

Hi all, been a long time since I posted on here (due to lack of internet) and its great to be back. Okay...I know the FH book just came out, and I lack the $$$ to purchase it (plus, my LGS won't order it unless somebody special orders it)...so I am curious about how the book handles Magic... What are the various options Steve mentions in the book on how to handle magic? Any information would be cool to know, so when I do get the book someday (not anytime soon though ) I will know what to expect. Anyone feeling like passing on some info my way.

Wizards in fantasy fiction are able to extend their lifespans 9without becoming liches) by hundreds of years. Elves never die unless killed, or unless they wil themselves to die out of ennui. And so forth. What are the practical effects of immortaloity on a campaign world? Can the same person rule a kingdom for hundreds of years as King Eternal? And how does that change the politics of that kingdom? If the Court Wizard has been serving the royal fmaility for hundreds of years, does he effectively become the government? How powerful can one get in a thousand years?

Wasn't there a thread on: Fantasy HERO weapon sameness?

I remember there being a thread here on the FH forum regarding the fact that some folks felt the Fantay Weapons listed in the HERO5e core book, and Fantasy here were somewhat bland. That they prefered the old weapons tables from FH4thed. Where Spears had inate armour peircing, Hammers had a stun bonus, Swords had a OCV bouns etc, etc. It was an interesting thread if I remember correctly, but, I can't seem to dig it up again. So, if anyone reading this knows/remembers what I'm rableing about, please post a like for poor ole forgetfull Doc.

If I wanted to build a sword that would be worth building an entire campaign around acquiring and weilding, just how powerful wuld that sword have to be? And what sort of power? I believe earlier on these boards I mentioned a sword that could eb only weilded by the high king. What if ownership of the sword meant that, int eh eyes of the peop,e you WERE the High King? The sword was lost three hundred years ago in a quest and thet land has been in chaos since then. The only way to save the realm from self-destruction is to find a worthy weilder for the sword -- but first the sword itself must be found. What is more the sword chooses who can use it to full effect -…

Guess what showed up on my doorstep this morning? The Fantasy Hero genre book, fresh from the printer! That means it's now well on its way to distributors (and thence to retailers), and a big shipment of 'em is probably already sitting in our booth at Indianapolis just waiting to be unpacked. If I do say so myself, it's a mighty cool book.

What do you think of allowing starting mages to have a VPP at the 20 pt. level (30 character points)? The restrictions would be that the player could not buy either the 0 phase or No Skill Roll needed advantages. This would help simulate mages who are more powerful when using “spells†but still capable of drawing on naturally occurring magical energy in a wide-ranging fashion. It would be most appropriate in a game where mages are uncommon (perhaps a ratio of 1 in 1,000 to 1 in 10,000). In my opinion it would alleviate the blasé mentality many people seem to have about mages and make them a little more mysterious and respected and a little less predictable and categor…

How common do you think martial arts should be in fantasy? I am not talking eastern style martial arts, but weapon martial arts such as schools of fencing, sword play, and other weapon arts. Should the average warrior have martial arts maneuvers or do they have CSL’s with their weapons or do they have both? Right now, I am considering this question and really do not know what to think. Of course, it depends upon the campaign, but I am talking the average D&D fantasy campaign.

Ok, in my campaign one of my characters (new to HERO) asked why Age was such a big disadvantage. Now, he sees it as giving him a boost in the Char Max for the characteristics he needs (EGO and INT), and still leaving him plenty of room to grow in his less important characteritics (a char with 15 BODY and CON is still much healthier than your average man). I can't farely make him "get sick more often" in every adventure, so really, he's getting points for Increased Char Maxima. In Fantasy, for Wizards, does Age seem like an advantage? -cK

Below is a magic system I am thinking of implementing. I’d like to get peoples feedback. Magic System All characters built on 100 + 25 CP Magic Skill (CP 3/2) – (9+EGO/5) EGO allows you to control the forces of magic Talents (3CP each): Magic Aptitude – must have to use magic (not necessarily magic items) Magic Ritual – must have to participate in ritual magic; requires Magic Aptitude Create Magic Items – must have to create magic items; requires Magic Ritual Intelligence is required to recall spells. There is a penalty when you attempt to cast spells of higher level. Spell Level: AP/10 Spell Delta: (INT-10) - Spell Level …

Wizard War! Dispel as an defensive action. Two Wizards throwing spells at each other. It is a great mental picture. And in order to expand on that I was wondering what you all thought of making a Dispel attempts as an Defensive action that a Wizard can Abort to, just like a Dodge or Parry. Thoughts.

I think that DF is doable in FH. Distinctive Feature: Race (Human, Elf, Dwarf, whatever) Concealable. Noticed Not distinctive in some cultures. In a busy city the character may go unknoticed BUT have that character travle through a halfling villiage. He will be distinctive.
