This is going to sound like a very off-the-wall question, but what sorts of martial arts can a halfling learn? I know Tolkien hobbits scorned martial pursuits, but halflings in the campaign world I am imagining are more involved in the world and do not foolishly scorn the need for self-defense. However, what can bodies that small be trained to do in the way of disdging physical attacks, striking opponents (I doubt they can be trained to leap very high or far, so flying kicks are right out!) or using melee weapons?

The magic system I am considering using for my FH Campaign. I believe that FH Hero has one main flaw. (If one can even call it a flaw. Did I mention I love this book?) It is that it leans toward non-magic users. That is to say, it is easier to make a good well balance non-magic user that it is to make a good well balance magic user. Now I believe that Steve realized this was the case. And that is why they provide the Players and GM with so many different options for magic system. (Well done Steve!) All of which are great examples. These example have lead me too the current Magic system that I think I want to use in my FH campaign. The basic premise it that wit…

STR is cheap in HERO and armor is light. What's stopping all the characters in my fantasy campaign from buying a 20 STR and full plate armor? It weighs in at maybe 40 kg, just 10% of their total weight allowance and not enough to impose any DCV/DEX Roll/movement penalties or long term END loss. Being equipment, it doesn't even cost points. And the high STR also has the crazily-efficient effect of boosing PD, REC, STUN, Leaping and damage. On the other hand, trying to build a lightly armed/armored swashbuckling type involves a high DEX (much more expensive than STR) and lots of extra DCV and Combat Luck, which do cost points (a lot in some cases, to get similar b…

I saw the ad in the bvack for Fantasy HERO Grimoire and i was wondering just what sort of book it was going to be and what kind of spells would be in it. Will it be just a book of spells, or would there be more to it? Finally, will there be a Hero Designer package for Fantasy HERO including the Grimorie, and will it be just as expensive as the UNTIL Superpowers Database kit? (I;'m sure there has been a thread on this subject, but I can;t find it. If someone could point me to it, I'd like to read and contribute to it.)

I been real busy with life the past months but now that I have Fantasy Hero for 5th I have redone my Managen magic system to reflect some of the ideas it has brought to the table. Like I said I would do here is my system in its entirety. Some of the changes in light of Fantasy Hero for 5th are: 1.) Made the system pure skill based and dropped the idea of managen being Independent items that give powers. Now managen is a focus but each managen focus has its own list of spells it supports. Both or more or less the same thing really but a pure skill based system look cleaner imo. Also I can distinguish between the process of making magic items or making managen …

I have Ultimate Martial Artist, and need to get a new copy of Ninja Hero, but now that I have Fantasy hero I was wondering if FH adventurers who knew UMA martial artist practices were viable in fantasy worlds. I can see fantasy worlds in which there are 'exotic" reigons where these arts are pracitsed, and it may even be a quest in itself to learn them. A very experienced Elf adventurer who has gone to the Oriental lands and studied both Kenjutsu AND Kyuujutsu and brought it back to his home woods could train a cadre of deadly Elf warriors. And especially if he knew battle magic he would be an extremely formidable warrior himself.

From the Thread Yamo started about plate mail being overly effective, I saw an interesting idea. Keeping in mind the core rule for Hero, the more USEFUL something is, the MORE points you pay. A Disad that never come into play, you get 0 pts. DEX, used for loads of stuff, you pay 3 per 1. The idea briefly posed and lost in the thread was this: STR could cost 2 pts per 1 STR bought. Thinking on how MUCH more useful in a FH setting STR is (Not too mention its cascade effect into secondary stats!), then in just about any other setting, I sort of like this idea. So I put it forth to all us assembled Hero players and GM's, what do you think of this idea, bearing in mi…

Armor Penalties, what do you use. I was just wondering what armor penalties, if any; you use in your FH games or the games you play in. The new FH (Did I mention I love that Book!!) give several options. And I am not sure what options(s) I should use. And do you put a penalty on magic of wearing armor?

STR and Armor, a brief analysis I went through this exercise largly after seeing the number of people who felt that STR was underpriced, especially in FH games. It is meant to inspire debate, but I am not interested in starting wars. If you find math errors, please point them out and I will try to correct them. I started with two warriors. One is named Light Warrior (LW), the other Heavy Warrior (HW). The premise was to see how much having better STR (and by extension, heavy armor) benefited HW over his weaker and lighter armored opponent. I have to make a lot of assumptions here, but I hope to give enough info for the reader to make their own judgments. …

Has anyone had any long term success with this type of campaign? I want to run a fantasy hero campaign in a low fantasy type world, like that of Robert Howard's Conan... Basically, my players want something different from the typical high fantasy fare, plus I think it will encourage them to be more open-minded about character design. If the game LOOKS like D&D, I'm afraid they will buy their characters like they are D&D characters, which is what we are switching to hero system to avoid, we want total creative control over the characters. What I was going to ask of you veteran Hero Fantasy-ites was this: Does anyone know where I can get any solid i…

I'm considering starting a new FH campaign, either in Lankmar, or in a "fantasy" medieval setting, and one of the things I wanted to do was create a relatively low magic feel without preventing spell-caster PCs. Although this was never overtly part of the Lankhmar mythos (either in the books or in the D&D conversion), I noticed that, other than gods and absurdly powerful spell-casters, virtually every spell cast in Lieber's works is cast through a device. Aha! My idea is to only allow "wizards" to purchase their spells through magic items. All spells must have a Focus, though it does not have to be expendable (although potions and the like should be, or …

Is anyone else suprised by the level of "free magic" handouts suggested in FH? Some of their systems give the caster a free Variable Power Pool. Others give the caster a huge discount on a variable power pool (say 80%), but place limitations on it which, to my eye, don't limit it nearly that much. Two of the systems discount all spells purchased by 80%, and while one requires a Perk purchase, and the other puts limitations on spell-casting (power, duration, and frequency), neither amounts to a -4 limitation in my eyes. One system simply doubles the power of any attack spell against someone whose True Name you know (at no cost increase at all). One…

Is there anythign special you need to do to design a magic item so that it can only be used by ONE person? Examples include a wizard's staff that only the wizard who made it can use (for everyone else it's just a stick) or a sword that grants its bonuses only to the regining King of All the Lands (to everyone else it's just an ordinary sword, perhaps even duller than usualy, but for the King it can cut through anything). This is the opposite of Independent, and almost certainly makes the item more expensive. It also makes the items useless if found as treasure. (But if the Sword of the Kings is found in a dungeon where a King died a hundred years ago, and the f…

Greetings, I was looking at the Fantasy Hero Mass Combat record sheet in the free stuff section. Does the new FH have information on calculating things like unit modifiers, and good ideas on running mass combat?? If so, are these ideas also applicable to running mass combat in other genres of the Hero system? Polaris

I wouldn't want to put these in the hands of starting PCs, but how does one go about desinging a really massive spell within the confines of FH? In the past, I ocne started a thread about building a spell designed to skill a dragon with one shot. What if this spell also did massive collateral damage? Likewise, in the 4th edition version of Fantasy Hero, there was a section about genres in which lone wizards can take on an army and win. Do that he would need a truly massive spell -- something that would destory a large enough chunk of the army with one shot that the rest would break ranks and flee rather than face it again. They don't have to know that it was a one-sh…

Hey all, This is for all of you who have played Fantasy Hero for a while and/or run the game. I have a couple of players wondering about lethality (or lack thereof) in Fantasy Hero. Looking at numbers alone, the average weapon damage would seem to be between 1 1/2 to 2 1/2 d6 killing averaging from 5 to 9 body done. If you take a normal fighter in plate mail - rDef 8(please no "plate mail should be rare" arguments, its not in most games or books, especially where dwarves are an inclusive race) or even chain - Rdef 6, it would appear that a very little if any body gets through. Stun doesnt appear to be a problem, but it does appear as if there is a real lack of lethal…

I have been loving my copy of Fantasy Hero. There is absolutely a massive amount of information, definately worth the price. However, I am worried about the spine of this thing. Its a huge book for a paperback. Hardback would have been nice but I am sure economic realities precluded that happening. I kind of wished they'd broken this thing into two volumns though. Am I the only one who finds the size to be a little akward?

Need help with this.. I am trying to develop a paladin power. The power is going to a "holy aura". It creates a aura that extends out 2 hexes from the paladin and any enemies that enter the aura will recieve damage from it. Those who play Rolemaster will recognize this from the paladin's spell list. Anyway, I am trying to decide if this would work better as a damage shield or as a EB/RKA no range/continious. If I go the continious route then the enemy would take damage every phase the paladin is able to take an action. However if I go the damage shield route, then the enemy would take damage every phase the enemy is within the range of the damage shield...is tha…

This is the email I sent to my players last night, I thought I might share it with you all. Currently we are all playing a Super Mercenaries Champions Game. None of them had ever played Hero before and the all seem to really be enjoying the game and the system. This is just one more reason never to go back to that evil game system…you know the one. I LOVE THIS BOOK. Any way here is how I described to my player (Edited for the kids) ***Email start***** I just got Fantasy Hero, its not a book it's a f***ing brick. 415 pages of kick a** stuff. No more of this I have to wait to be 5th level to cast a fireball, s**t. If I want to be a Sword Master and train with the swo…
