I started the thread in another board, so I figure I might attach the link to a more appropriate place. http://www.herogames.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&postid=47696#post47696

I'm currently working on a Fantasy Hero character, and I need some input. It's your basic Ranger-type character, but I want him to know a few simple spells to help him out. I'm talking things like Resist Elements (Life Support or Change Environment), Healing (low-level/takes time/requires herbs), etc. The world is fairly high magic, anyone with some aptitude can learn a few household spells, but you require specialist mage training to do anything powerful. Any ideas on the sort of spells he should know? Also, anyone have an idea on how to model a spell allowing him to start a fire?? cheers oberon

Here's my first attempt at designing a Heroic magic-using character for HERO on the standard 75 +75 points. I managed to start out with a fairly useful selection of spells, but I do still have some concerns over the slow growth in this area that the "single spell = single Power" system can often mean... I'm still pretty satisfied with the character as written, though. I have only the genesis of a backstory so far, but the stats are complete. Name: Ziran Reilore Player: Will Mistretta Race: Human Gender: Male Characteristics: STR: 10, Roll: 11-, Lift 100 kg, 2d6 DEX: 14. Roll: 12-, OCV:5/DCV:5 CON: 13, Roll: 12- BODY: 10, Roll: 11- I…

I made this post elsewhere (http://www.herogames.com/forums/sho...=&threadid=2700) but will make it here. I am moving forward with the project as part of a website of non-d20 gaming resources. I've been reading all the posts/threads about folks working to convert their favorite book/TV show/game setting to FREd and realized that what we all really could use is one place for everyone to put their work. What I am proposing is to host such a site. The ground rules would be: 1) I will not make any decisions on the specific conversions unless I am involved in that particular project. 2) The site will acknowledge all copyrights. 3) The site will acknowl…

Ok, I haven;t really seen this discussed anywhere, but I thought some of the ways I have balanced mages in my games in the past may be helpful to others out there. See, the problem with mages is they buiy a lot fo magic inherent to themselves... meaning, they pay the HPs for them. The fighter or rogue of the group just buys stats and skills, and can run to the local shop to pick up a sword. Maybe the local alchemist for some Greek Fire or a potion of Invisibility. The end result is you have a fighter type based on the core amount of points in your game (we will assume 150 from ehre on out), and THEN he gets all his nifty weapons on top of that. The Mage is mostl…

Part of my first session GMing FH. If you folks are interested I'll continue as long as the weekly sessions hold out. ---------------- Lavenus the Most Pretty wearily walks towards Cowscrossing after weeks of stomping through thick forest and swamp. "When I find him, I will take his hide, that bastard! 'Follow the western trail' he says, 'Cowscrossing is a huge city' he says, 'You can't miss it' he says..." Looking at his clothes in dismay, "These swamp stains will take hours to get out! and what if somebody notices the smell?" As it turns out, Cowscrossing is a small town. Calling it walled would be generous, fenced would be a better term as the timbe…

Question for the GMs: Most magic-using Fantasy HERO characters I've seen have at least one Power Skill tied-in to their spellcasting ability. Usually called Magic, Faith, or something similar. Obviously, these often serve as the basis for Required Skill Rolls relating to the character's spells, but what else do you allow and encourage them to be used for in terms of "power stunts?" Given the following scenarios, where would you draw the line? 1. Cantrips. Incredible minor spells with no real combat application or measurable "power." These tend to be useful mostly for narrative purposes, as they either let character do things with no tangible effect on their envi…

Gem/Focus Magic System 1 2 3 4

Not wanting to take over a perfectly good Final Fantasy thread, but wanting to start/continue talking about gem magic I will endeavor to start this new thread. I believe I can say it is the goal of Zoth and me (err...myself I can't remember propper grammar), to create an effective magic system that revolves around gems, or at least a system that is focus heavy. I will present my system, dubbed Channeling, because the mage channels mystic energy into the focus to be used later. It is a name I am not to overjoyed with, since it is simplistic, but I have not stumbled upon anything better. I would appreciate any comments on my system, perhaps an idea for a better…

This might be a bad idea, or maybe a good idea, but I was wondering and I think this would be really cool to play in, is combining the world of Game of Thrones with the magic of Wheel of Time in one world. Personally I think that would be cool as hell since I like both series equally for there own reasons. What do you guys think?

OK, folks, it’s time to get serious about the Origins Award write-in campaign that I’ve hinted at previously. To briefly recap, Hero Games products, including 5E, were completely shut out of the nominations for the 2002 Origins Awards, despite the high quality and importance of our 2002 releases. We want to correct this grievous oversight by mounting a write-in campaign. To succeed, we need YOUR help — and the help of anyone else you can recruit to vote on our behalf. If you’d like to know more, or would like to get directions on how to vote and other things you can do to help, please visit: http://herogame.dans.cust.servlets.net/news/newsWriteInCam…

Steve will probably have a few answers to these questions, but I thought I'd get a few opinions. What, in your opinion, is the best way to build a heroic-level mage in the Hero System 5? Some possibilities that come to mind: 1. Take a VPP and have the player pre-generate a spellbook with as many spells as he likes. This would create a versatile but less powerful mage, as the control cost could mean he couldn;t cast excessively potent spells. 2. Buy the mage's powers as a Multipower with ultra slots for each spell, for the character who knows a small-to-moderate number of powerful spells. This might be a good combination for battle mages. 3. Build and b…

Sounds like a classic Transformation attack (albeit a powerful one.) Figure out how many points a person gets for being a vampire and add 1/5 of them to the body score for the purposes of the target number of the attack. That covers the increase in power. It will probably require multiple attacks to succeed. 3 nights? Keith "I do not drink... blood" Curtis

I sometimes wonder what sort of martial arts-like abilities elves should have in a fantasy campaign. Should elves know kyujutsu, or should they have another martial art for bows? Are their warriors skilled unarmed fighters, or do they rely on elegantly-crafted swords and staves? The big question, of course, is whether a 500-year-old elf should be built on the same point base as a 18-year-old human fighter?

I'm not sure how many people here are fammiliar with the board game Talisman. But here goes, would this make an interesting world to set a game? Since it provides so many different character types, how would they tranlate into Hero terms?

New GM/How do I balance Armor? 1 2
by Guest Green Giant- 48 replies

I have recently started running a fantasy HERO campaign and have run into an irritaion regarding heavily armored charcters. I have mixed party of two light fighting elves, a hobbit thief, and a heavily armored knight. How do I balance encounters so that it is challenging combat for the knight while not completely slaughtering the characters without massive amounts of armor. The 6-8 def of resistant armor make almost all arrows and typical melee weapons bounce off of the knight. I am utilizing dex based skill penalties and other mundane difficulties with donning armor, but it takes pretty threatening creatures to put the fear in the player. Do you just have to get throug…

Has anyone ever run a fantasy campaign in which none of the PCs can use magic? Maybe magic is a closely-guarded secret that none of the PCs got in on. Maybe magic is forbidden or inherently corrupting, and only villains use it. IN any event, how does that change the game?

Hi folks! I have got a litte problem and wanted to hear how other GMs deal with the limitation on wood&plant magic "Only where plants can grow -1/4". In my oppinion if you say this means no magic at all indoors, then a -1/4 limitation is ridicolous, cause how high is the percantage of monsters you encounter if you are acually indoors??? If you say indoors, in a cellar for example there can grow plants through little cuts in the stones, so where then can no plant grow? To put it a little bit further, is there a must that there is earth in "reach" for plants? Just think of this small green stuff just growing on rocks where is basicly nothing... …

One thing I've always wondered about fantasy cities is that if the magic exists to create magical lights that don;t go out until you want to do, why not apply that magic to lighting the streets of the city? I don;'t know how much profit there would be in it, but perhaps mages may be required to every so often perform the "public service" for the city of enchanting new streetlamps to light the night, and thus help reduce crime and keep drivers and pedestrians at night from getting lost. Hopefully there's a way for a PC mage to cast the spell without giving up any of his Character Points to the Independent light effect.

Here's my problem: How do I balance magic-using and non-magic-using characters in a HERO fantasy game? Making the magic-users buy all their spells with the standard Power rules doesn't seem to be the answer. Even if they purchase just a few moderately useful ones, it seems to require so many points that the fighting characters in the group can buy multiple 5 or 8-point CSLs for each spell the magic-users do. This quickly leads to competent wizards and absolutely GODLIKE swordswingers; an undesirable situation. The main solution I can see to this is utilizing Power Frameworks, with a sizable Variable Point Pool or all spells purchased as part of a magic Mul…

Looking for online hex maps for fantasy buildings
by Guest AGLAR- 12 replies

Anyone know a good site for hex maps (preferably done on Hero scale) for typical fantasy buildings? Not looking for castles, more interested in typical village buildings like inns, bars, small houses, barns, shops, etc. I am trying to help a newbie to the hero system learn the rules by running an orc attack on a village via Yahoo groups. The PCs see the smoke, charge into town, save the villagers type of thing. My goal is to give this newbie some pre-generated PCs and let him see how Hero shines before he puts in the significant time needed to learn the system. Right now, he has the car buying equivalent of "Sticker Shock" from trying to learn everythi…

I was wondering what kinds of steps the many of you take when you decide to make a character. Do you guys write down your backgrounds first, or just work with the points and do the background first, or something else? I ask because I am new with the system still, its a lot to digest and a lot to get used to, and the one character i made took over 3 hours to make. It was okay, but not that great in my opinion, so I am just curious what you all do and how long it takes you to do it. Perhaps I will pick up some pointers that will help me out more.

wanting to start a fantasy hero campaign and have the plot line -idea tied to the mythological wendigo - i picture the creature as a collection of seperate spirits or entities and a being that is thousands of years old. the wendigo does have some created avatar types that resemble Yeti - the players goal is (after discovering the wendigo legend) to find the hidden fortress that holds a imprisoned wendigo and initiate the release of "good" spirits before a race of Not so good characters release "evil" spirits that would comprise the wendigo. The players have characters from 110-180 pts (after disadvantages) looking for ideas on stats for the wendigo any help would…

Given that powers cost the same for everyone, how do you control, limit, increase the cost of, etc. powers that are in the province of one magical type from those of another? E.g., if Healing is available to practitioners of Divine Magic and Wizardry, but the Divine practitioner's Healing is twice as effective (or half the cost of) the Wizard's, how do you handle this, when Healing has a set cost? If you say "Wizards can't have more than 5D6 Healing", then what other than explicit GM disapproval keeps the balance in play for starting Wizards vs. Priests, if a starter Priest only has 3D6 Healing?

This is a question that I seem to see popping up on numerous boards from WOTC to Rpgnet... So I thought I'd bring it here. There are many people who have put much time and effort into creating campaign worlds for fantasy games (and many more genre's). Some keep it simple with the whole intention of "create as you go" just so they can have something to game in. Others have spent years of their lives fleshing out worlds that the hope to someday write novels in, get published, etc. The question that I keep finding is on the lines of... I'm looking to create a world for my fantasy campaign. The problem is that I have no idea where to start. I also have no idea what…
