I've been thinking about Fantasy Hero settings for a while now and I've come to the spot where mundane equipment has become an issue. At a certain point, gear implies culture. If characters get to wear plate armour, why aren't you playing a medieval game? If you don't want to play that, why are you allowing that? OK, (home now), in a personal game, this isn't an issue. If you are writing for publication, it is. Maybe that's one of the reasons why the published settings are so bland. For me, the best published Fantasy Hero setting was the ICE dual-statted Mythic Greece. That was a book that made me want to play it. Because of my life at the …

This is just a random thought I just had. Is there any good reason why can't a sorcerer/wizard be modelled using skills and perks? And yes, I know the answer is: no reason, in my game. But still, the rant may be interesting. OK, so our student of the Dark Arts learns things, and acquires things. (For the moment, let's say he is male.) What does he know: well, he probably can read, and possibly speak, some old language. Grimoires (for example) aren't necessarily written in a modern language. They may also be encrypted, and/or omit important details. That way they can't just be stolen and used by any random person. So they can be read. Of course, they would j…

Currently I'm at work on another novel, so my gaming books are on the back burner but I've started work on this new module and have been working over the years on it based on an old game I ran in this setting. The core concept is that this is a huge forest on a key trade route between two major cities. Long ago there was a kingdom there, which fell under mysterious and awful circumstances. From then on the forest has been suspect and over time its gotten worse and worse. OK pretty pedestrian so far, but what I'm trying to do here is make a large sandbox adventure area for a campaign to run about in quite a while, whether trying to find out what went wrong or just to…

I'm not really sure if "evil" is really all that much different in a fantasy world than real life. But most role players tend to run into evil more in their games than real life. So what is the essence of evil in your game world if you were to boil it down to a few sentences? Here's mine. The essence of evil: There are plenty of people you can exploit in the world but only a few who you can trust to guard you while you are sleeping. Treat those people like the most precious of treasures...so you can get back to ripping off everyone else.

Corvid Cove is a small port town that apparently got its name from the almost ubiquitous quantity of ravens that live there, and who seem to have driven away the more normal seabirds one would find in such places. The ravens are everywhere, as if they are watching people. According to tales, it originated as a pirate hideout, the surprisingly deep bay concealed by high cliffs and a twisting passage entrance that required excellent sailing skills and nerves of steel to enter or depart back then. However, the pirates eventually made too much of a nuisance of themselves and were massacred by the navies of several nations in the region. Their bones lie strewn abou…

It might be fun to talk about barbarians. In your game, where are they from? What makes them barbarians? How do they live in their homelands? Can they become Conan style kings? How do they do it and how do they stay in power? Do they establish dynasties?

Grammarspire is the name of a centuries old wizard’s tower located on the edge of a forest with an ancient history of faerie enchantments and dangerous magical beasts that attracted the original builder of the tower here when he was an adventurer, but it has been fairly quiescent for many decades thanks to the irregular efforts of various roving bands of adventurers passing through from time to time as well as past wizards plundering the slowly dwindling magical resources from the woodlands. Years might pass between visits by such adventuring companies nowadays. While not located on a major trade road, it still sees some occasional visitors and generally needs t…

Hello, Its been years since I've played hero system but we started up a game of fantasy hero. One of the players wants to make a Paralysis and a sleep position. I was wondering if anyone could make some suggestions as to what power to use to build these on. I'm trying to keep the active points to around 30 points. We are using the 5th edition rules. Thanks for any help.

I've brain failed on the following spell: (Special effect description): When the spell is cast, a small storm cloud forms above the caster's head. From it, she can call lighting bolts, storm winds and similar effects. It stays in place for as long as she can maintain it - the more powerful the caster, the longer. Eventually, however, it goes away, even if the caster doesn't actually use it. Once it is gone, the spell needs to be memorized again before it can be recast. (I'm actually thinking of building a bunch of spells along these lines. The idea is that a powerful caster might only know a handful of such spells - but they can destroy an army, or a city.) Th…

Posted this is Online Resources forum because it was in the Hero Download section. But I thought I might get a better response here. I found a character sheet in the resource section that was pretty close to what I was looking for as a Play sheet for CONs and Intro Games. Essentially sheet that leaves out all points and give general text boxes for entering info. The one I found that was Fantasy Hero Character Sheet form beta2.pdf Beta2 in the HERO System 6th Edition Documents section. I’d like to upload my 5th Ed version to HERO System 5th Edition Documents and wanted to touch base with the original poster and get their OK to do so. I went ba…

I have long been dissatisfied with the weapons list as written for Fantasy Hero. They don't feel distinct enough, have clear winners, not enough variety of characteristics and don't well represent some of the nuances of weapons in real life which of late we've seen gigantic upgrades in knowledge and information. One thing that helps is using killing attacks built so they work like normal attacks instead of a separate mechanic. This gives weapons a better feel for small differences (this dagger does 2d6, this one does 2½d6, etc. Another thing is to put a speed on weapons. This is often messy and difficult to implement well without making it exces…

Don't get me wrong, in a traditional DnD game I LOVED playing the cleric. Decent HTH, Good Armour, and a nice selection of spells/miracles make a cleric a well rounded PC. But is he manditory? Most of the time, he was the "Healer" of the party and with a jerk GM the cleric was just shy of the Paladin as the PC most likely to get smacked by a vengeful GM. Also depending on the nature of your deities, you could end up with some wildly differing looks to a cleric. For example I have a Goddess of the Night Sky: Lady of the Stars, the navigator, Patroness of sailors, desert travelers. The night predator. romance. Poetry, beauty She should have very differen…

I have a character who is a witch. I don't want to have to say this, but I want to make it clear without saying that. Obviously her name is the best giveaway. So, I need a name that says "she's a witch!" Endora from Bewitched was a good name - a reference to the biblical Witch of Endor - but obviously that's not suitable ("been done"). Hecate could work, but it's a bit too obvious. Can anyone think of a name that generically says "witch!"? Non-English names are OK.

I mentioned I was working on moving my old game notebooks to digital format and I felt like sharing a piece of the first notebook. Focused mostly on campaign material for a setting about The Golden City. Here's the "intro blurb", the overland map, and the city map (before cleaning up the line work). "Two generations ago, the world died. During the Burn the High Mage of the famed magical academy, the Golden City, erected an enormous barrier over the city and much of the surrounding land. The city accepted any refugees from the Ruin that had outlasted the Burn, survived the twisted creatures that hunt within it, and managed to fight their way to the barrier. The…

Setting SFX

Today I tried to make a NPC using the Metier System from Killer Shrikes page. 34 points for stats OK Mage sight as a sense (will upgrade later) Power skill at 16- and a few Languages, riding, WF, trading (any other skill good for a beginning PC) Spells- Uses a MP with RSR and a set of advantages and disadvantages based on the style chosen (I went 1/2 end and x4 diff to dispel ... Gestures, Incant., Concent. ) Oh and an END Reserve 40 end 3 Rec. Now my point. This is very... generic. How do I personalize the caster? I thought when you get the spell you choose the SFX and it remains that way forever. So two casters who buy EB cou…

I am making some Runemaster Character Ala Killer Shrike and the package deal has 15 points to buy self made rune weapons. Easy enough as required limitations are things like Focus and Independent. Easy enough. I made an Armour Charm with IIF and Indep. But weapons have a Str Minimum. In his examples the weapons have no Str Min.... BUT.... is that the norm? Do magic weapons use Str Min (are normal weapons just with extras) OR Do magic weapons NOT use Str Min (part of the enchantment is that they are almost effortless to use) Which way do you go in your campaign? Have you tried both and found one wanting?

What point totals have you used in your FH games? What worked, what didn't, and what are the pros and cons for each power level? For context, I am considering a fairly simple Swords and Sorcery game and thinking of starting at about 100 or 125 points, depending on which edition I decide to use. That's including Disadvantages/Complications of course. Obviously you should specify which edition(s) you refer to for clarity. And no, I won't be using a published setting, so references to them aren't terribly useful.

This is for a medieval-ish game. They are kind of related, but thankfully no game is ever going to completely ride the rails. The categories can overlap to various degrees. The Barbarian: not necessarily the Full Conan, but a pirate, mercenary and general scoundrel for pay. May have followers. If you have the cash, he or she has the warband, and isn't bothered by silly prophecies. The Claimant to the Throne: This person is the disputed heir to a probably minor kingdom or title. Their (male?) rival is good at swords, horses and generally being a popular aristocrat of the less cerebral kind. The Claimant might be being paid to stay away, or may be being fobbe…

So, I'm considering suggesting a move to Hero from Pathfinder. And I'm not particularly worried about convincing them to try a more flexible rules set, having seen them all get frustrated at (and in some cases try to bend the rules around) not being able to grow the characters to match the story rather than the 'class'. Which only leaves me with a much more serious issue: they really like their pretty dice Given this'll be a fantasy game, I forsee a lot of killing attacks so I'm considering using dice for the different DCs of KAs. It seems to work fairly nicely, something along the lines of: 1, 1d4, 1d6, 1d8, 1d10 for the first 5 DCs without skew…

HSMA has it where you can do a non-defined martial art. 8 3-pt CSLs where you can mix OCV, DCV, and dmg. I'm putting the character in HD tomorrow and I'll post the file. She's part of a X-Crawl / Urban Fantasy Hero game. But to topic. Has anyone else done this and how has it worked for you? This is the 5th character I've done for this, the last a Half-Orc who took the levels with a -1/2 "only with bladed weapons" to represent all the sword mastery she learned as part of her training by her Orcan mother and in King Thar's (an orc) army. A lot of training without any real semblance of ordered style.

I need stats for a Leopard (big cat) that I plan to use as a follower for a totem shaman that I plan to make. My Hero bestiary is deep in storage and .... I don't want to go digging for it. So if a kind soul give me a heads up for your average plains type leopard?
