BlackWyrm is proud to announce a new line of dry-erase starship maps, designed by Ryan Wolfe of Ki Ryn Studios. His starship work has been seen in the Serenity RPG, Battlestar Galactica RPG, and some BlackWyrm Games books as well. We'll be rolling out these starships one by one over the next several months, and we have three great ones to start you off. The Jo Lynn and the Gryphon are on 36" x 18" vinyl mats, and the larger Drake is 48" x 30".

Dozens of free PDF's of West End Games RPG version of Star Wars. Rule books, Sourcebooks, adventures, guides, races, planets, ships, characters, even a couple of "choose your own adventure" solo books. Also some conversions of WotC's d20 Star Wars into the West End Games d6 system. Had no idea all of this existed until a few minutes ago but it looks like most everything Star Wars that WEG published. http://www.starwarstimeline.net/Westendgames.htm

I was watching a drone racing competition on TV and decided it had a place in my science fiction society. After all, people in the future will need entertainment like we do today. And it looks futuristic, especially with all the trappings. Despite movies like Rollerball and Running Man, I don't see a lot of ultraviolent sports in my future society, although combat sports will still be around. Maybe robot combat will be a popular alternative, as will virtual reality combat, like the old BattleTech Centers in the 1990s. Laser tag is still around, even though it's past its heyday. Of course, there's more to entertainment than sports. …

I'm probably (hopefully) going to be starting up a Star Hero in the next several months so I need a decent starship's deck plans. No while the move Prometheus left a lot to be desired, I did find myself taking a liking to the ship itself. Same with the Raza from Sci-Fi's Dark Matter. I liked the show for a bit, up until the last few episodes, but still like the ship. My problem comes from, probably, my lack of Google-fu. It is weak. I can't seem to find decent plans for either ship. So, I'm turning to herodom at large for assistance. It might be a little bit before I can make it back to the boards but then, it's going to be a bit before my game star…

Re: Gemini Ascendant Campaign You are a sad, sad "BIG" man... I worked on Milo last night but am not quite satisfied with the result so far. I will have a very rough first WIP posted today. Next week it Caspar, and TaRang... then finally around thanksgiving Shr'Kaak and Wade... provided the GM lets us live that long

For folks who pay attention to FFE, yes, I'm that Don McKinney... legacy Traveller errata, Mongoose Zhodani book, etc. My local gaming group wants to return to HERO, but the last time we all played was 4th. Looking to combine my T5 and other efforts, since everyone but me wants to give HERO a new shakeout. So, is there anyone who has done some preliminary work on converting TH to HERO 6th, and is there enough interest that I would start collecting TH errata/material. Sadly, I know a TH CD is not an option.

I understand why there are lightsabers in Star Wars; the Jedi Order is (or was) a part of the setting. But there are other examples of swords in scifi. Klingons have the bat'leth. The Narn and Centauri have their own blades. Traveller, Warhammer 40000, and Halo all include swords in their arsenals. But why? Swords aren't used in combat nowadays, and they aren't about to make a comeback in the battlefield anytime soon. Why would they make a comeback in the far future? The Traveller rpg has some explanation: Swords are used instead of guns to prevent damaging internal systems when fighting on board a starship. They are a feature on sword & planet…

When we start thinking about the great expanse of space and what kind of beings might inhabit it, one thing we tend to do is think of how dangerous 'the other' could be. We do this on earth, of course, when we discuss how humans aren't the fastest, strongest, most poisoness, etc. But what if we have it all wrong? What if we are just about he pentacle of dangerous beings? The following is a joking short of an alien anthropologist discussing humans. Enjoy! Soar.

Inspired by the thread, "Something All Sci-Fi Gamers Should Have," in which a D20 product involving over one thousand science fiction weapons was brought up and discussed. In response, it was suggested that we meet that challenge by building 1000+ Sci-Fi weapons with HERO as a free resource for all HERO players. It looks like it's up to me to start this thread, so here goes. This thread is for posting the builds. Use the above link to discuss the building of the weapons in the original thread. Follow the format I lay out, but don't be afraid to suggest a possibly superior format. Also, don't be afraid to take what one person builds and modify it into something else -…

It's patchy and needs a lot more work, but for any Trek fans who want to use the info, I've posted TrekHero.pdf at http://rbrucecom.tripod.com/ I've got package deals, Federation races, some weapons, tricorders, etc, but there's lots of work to go. Any CONSTRUCTIVE criticism appreciated, but REMEMBER that it is very much a work in progress getting all my notes from 20 years ago hauled together and converted to 5E.

I'm working on an Enterprise-era reboot fic w. a new crew for the NX-01 and an altered Trek timeline. Let's face it, in canon, Kahn was exiled in... 1996. In fact, I'm only saying its set in 88 AFC [after first contact] w.out saying what year first contact happened in. I'm also updating some themes while trying to stay true to what made Trek fun. In some ways, Roddenberry's 1960's zeitgeist-standpoint on ethics and utopia leaves me utterly cold. For me, Trek's writers and actors made it work despite the creator.I want to focus on a classically (not radically) liberal optimism about of man's future and technology. And on Space Action! and Boldly Going! So, anyways, I'm loo…

Another list I'm compiling, figured it would be right at home here on the Star HERO forums: Marcus The Impudite's List Of Preposterously Dangerous Design Flaws Starfleet Vessels Should Never Have Been Allowed To Leave Spacedock With: 1) Lack Of Seatbelts: Yes, Starfleet ships come equipped with Inertia Dampeners; but if I has a nickel for every damned time they've been knocked offline and the crew has been jostled around like the balls in a Bingo hopper, I'd be independently wealthy. Cars have seatbelts. Airplanes and helicopters have seatbelts. The frickin' space shuttle had seatbelts. It's a tried and true safety technology, so it's highly illogical for starship…

Science fiction is a work of imagination. It's a speculation on what society may be like in the future. The thing is, I notice how almost all SF shows seem to be a variation on a theme. Most campaigns are filled with aliens both friendly and hostile, blasters, and travel across the galaxy. Star Wars, Star Trek, Babylon 5, whatever; it's almost the same thing once you strip it down to basics. And yet, I hear a lot of complaints when I try something different, say, a near-future campaign that has a few advancements in technology, but is otherwise similar to today's society. This is what I've heard: "WAAAAAH! Why is the space military based on the Air Force? That's n…

This thread is similar to the Random Links thread in the NGD. It's for scifi-related videos, articles, pictures, etc. for topics that don't quite fit anywhere in the threads here. If you find something interesting but don't really want to start a new discussion about the topic, feel free to post it here.

One of the things I seem to have trouble conveying to my players is how things appear in my games. How do buildings and spacecraft look? What are people wearing? After all, Star Wars and Star Trek look quite different from each other. My game, being set in the near future, wouldn't resemble either one. I was watching 2001: A Space Odyssey the other day and pretty much everything clicked. Clavius Station and the Discovery One would be perfect for my game, as would the space station and space plane. Other visuals would include Babylon 5, as O'Neill Cylinders do exist in my game. The uniforms look good too. Military spacecraft look like the Cold Navy line of miniatur…

This project has a new name. It is now: HERO: Combat Evolved This is it, the official "Thia got off his rear and finally started putting this into HERO Designer" HALO thread. I hope you all enjoy what I've got coming; when this is done (and now, finally, i can do it with far less pain) I'll be contacting Arooo to have him put it up on StarHeroFanDom. For your consumption, I give you, in this first post: -- Human Arsenal, in .hdp format. For those of you who do not have HDv3, please pick it up, however, I am more than happy to post individual weapons for those who really really want them but don't have HD. This group includes: MA5B Assault Rifle [Halo 1…

The AI Rebellion. A staple of sciene fiction, so it propably will make a appeareane in a Star Hero Setting. Computerphile is a nice channel and right now, they have a number of of things on the Mater of how AI could go utterly wrong. And I mean actuall scientific examination. First a minor mater of terminology, as there are 2 types of Robot/AI wich are easy to mix up: - AI as part of the Engineering Deparment. Also "Smart Technologies" or Dumb Agent AI. This was a huge success. This is what we have now, in Computer games, your Diswasher, your Selfdriving car. - AI as part of the Cognitive Science Deparment. This was a complete disaster.…

So, I'm running a Star Trek game on Hero. The PCs are crew members of an Ambassador Class ship (think Enterprise C) in 2380 (post Star Trek: Nemesis). I am assuming that the ship has civilians on board like the Odyssey class ships we saw in Next Gen, both dependents of Starfleet personnel and civilian contractors. My question is: what do the civilians on board a starfleet vessel do to pass the time and feel productive? The only examples I can remember from Next Gen are Wesley Crusher, a teenage genius who became an acting crew member and later a starfleet cadet; Keiko O'Brien, a biologist who passed the time teaching; and Guinan, who ran the bar/lounge and was not a depen…

Shadowcat1313 and I have gotten the okay from Traveller's Marc Miller to put together a PDF of TravellerHERO. It'll be writeups of all things Traveller for use in HERO/Star Hero. Shadowcat1313 and I (and a few other Traveller gurus he knows) will be collaborating on this effort, and the file PDF will reside with Shadowcat1313's files on StarHeroFandom. No details on the when yet, I've just built the cover and stylesheets in InDesign, and we have to get the content written and collected. Long Live Star Hero!

This February, the Wachowskis are poised to set trends once again with their first Space Opera epic; Jupiter Ascending. It looks fantastic. 3 trailers have been released so far. Check them out. It releases February 6th. I plan to catch this one at the theaters. I saw trailer #3 in front of The Battle of Five Armies and it was the most impressive thing I've seen on the big screen in a long time. (visually) On a side note: The Wachowskis are delving into subjects that drive conspiracy nuts crazy. With The Matrix it was about the nature of reality and humanities place in it. With Cloud Atlas it was reincarnation and the role of past lives and the trans…

Posting this here rather than NGD because I'm more interested in the implications for roleplaying than I am in debating what is/isn't canon. Also hoping to keep this from spiraling too far down into political commentary on the current state of our society. (Tho I do feel there are some parallels.) Most Citizens of the Star Wars Galaxy are Probably Totally Illiterate This blog post is a few years old but it's new to me. (It got referenced in a WaPo article yesterday for the Fourth plugging the author's new book.) Basically the author points out that in 8 SW movies we never see anyone reading for pleasure, and most people don't seem to read at all beyond "I know tha…

Hi all. Well im new at Hero system. But love the rules. I will try to create an Star Wars universe (Old Republic) Normally we play the D20 star Wars Saga edition (Old Republic) I'm about to convert, the characters from D20 to Hero. And here is my question! How would you convert an Jedi Master? (in d20 he is a CL13(the max CL-lvl is 20 in that game)) This is my idea until now. Characteristic Max for Human 20 Skill Max 16 Powers, weapons , Amour and Items - No limits (but they can spent CP to tune the weapons esp. A light saber Killing attack hth 2d6, could be 2d6+2 CP spent 5) Charter starting points 125cp Complication 50cp Characte…
