Let's say you have an FTL drive that relies on Hyperspace, Jump Space, or some other theoretical construct that gets you over a great distance by having you enter some other dimension linked to it and travel an experientially shorter distance. Normally I would imagine this would be written up on a Star Hero ship as merely a special effect of the FTL power. But I'm wondering if it might be an Extra-Dimensional Movement power instead in some campaigns, and here's why -- you may not be the only things there. Imagine everyone going through Jump Space goes through the same plane of Jump Space (or whatever you call it). This makes some sense -- your Jump Drive shouldn't…

Working on a SH campaign, and I'm trying to create some basic package deals that could potentially represent a player-character's background. My basic Marine (enlisted) PD (cost: 4 character points) Abilities: Combat Driving (3 pts), Concealment (3 pts), Demolitions (3 pts), Interrogation (3 pts), Martial Arts (Commando Training - 24 pts), +2 OCV w/ Martial Arts & Combat Rifle (4 pt levels; total 8 pts), Survival (3 pts), Tracking (3 pts), TF: Tracked Vehicles (2 pts), WF: Small Arms - SF (2 pts). A while ago I made a number of Stellaris "playthrough reports". The idea was to try something new and give you guys some ideas for a setting if you ever need one. Stellaris got a Update, so time to make a new one. While as usual the new empires are not quite "playable" yet due to a number of bugs/oversights, I will keep to a more traditional human Empire. Setting for Humanity: Humanity of Sol is mostly Unified under the Global Government of the UN and has been for around a century. About 100 years before gamestart they Started the "Ulysses Initiative". 6 Arkships with unstable but powerfull Wormhole generators. 0.5 Million colonists in cryosleep each. They were send…

I'm working on a premise for a Star Hero campaign, and is crossed my mind that Star Hero Complete would make a nice addition to the Complete product line. The idea has bounced around in my head for a few days now, so I thought I'd leave it here to get some feedback. If such a product were in the works, what unique elements would you like it to contain that would differentiate it from Champions and Fantasy Hero Complete? For example, Fantasy Hero Complete differentiated itself by including Ranged Martial Arts, and Talents drawn from Fantasy Hero (such as Turn Undead), but excluding modern skills (such as Bugging and Computer Programming). It had a more extensive c…

Okay as mentioned in my other post I'm working on a Star Hero/Fantasy Hero type campaign. Debating on completing it and releasing it as a product. I need a good name for the campaign, I've put a few in the poll. Please list any others you think of and we might add them to the poll. Here is a small PDF with some of the thoughts for the campaign. So, I just watched Valerian. And I do not know if it was a bad translation or those scenes landed on the cutting room, but I feel like I am missing a lot of Information to fully understand the Film. It was like I was reading a comic, but the Author Information boxes were missing. As if I am reading a comic like this, but can not 'hear' the Narator: http://www.schlockmercenary.com/2003-03-09 The pieces I am missing: 1. The Great Market. They said it is in another Dimension. But the way they represented it, it was more like a virtual reality. To use Shadowrun Terms: The glasses and gloves are "using VR". While the boxes are "Jacking into the Martix" (more effect bu…

Posting this here rather than NGD because I'm more interested in the implications for roleplaying than I am in debating what is/isn't canon. Also hoping to keep this from spiraling too far down into political commentary on the current state of our society. (Tho I do feel there are some parallels.) Most Citizens of the Star Wars Galaxy are Probably Totally Illiterate This blog post is a few years old but it's new to me. (It got referenced in a WaPo article yesterday for the Fourth plugging the author's new book.) Basically the author points out that in 8 SW movies we never see anyone reading for pleasure, and most people don't seem to read at all beyond "I know tha…

Can I ask questions about non hero games products here and can I recommend a good none here product I think SF RPG gamers could use? I don't want to cause trouble.

I'm hoping someone can help me figure out how to do something in 5th Ed Champions. One of the common things in sci-fi is the terraforming of planets, and I'm trying to figure out how this can be accomplished within the game. I've seen one other method listed elsewhere on this board (using Summon) but it seems more like that would create a new planet where none existed rather than changing one that was already there. Suppose we were starting with a Mars-like planet: 6800 km diameter, average surface temperature of -80F, gravity approximately 1/3 that of Earth. We'd like to terraform it into an Earth-like planet, which means the average surface temperature needs to incr…

Could people name some interesting aliens from whatever source they choose that they would recommend using in SFRPGs, even if it means pretty much cutting and pasting them into a home made universe. I'd start with the Kafer and Eber from 2300 A.D. I think both are plausible, believable aliens that are far from human in all ways but still relatable to to and comprehendible to humans. I can believe they could exist in the real universe given the care with whixh they and their origins and evolution were crafted. The kafer make great enemies, the eber could be good allies. The ceph from the crysis series. They are another truly alien species with a different but ratio…

Think Orion's Arm or the Culture sprinkled into traveller. Has anyone done this? First decision whether to allow Jump and Wormholes or just pick one FTL tech.

Did you know that your brain is actually two persons, with one maybe just a mute watcher being unable to act? Another things are musing about mind copy immortality and the continuity flaw. Schlock Mercenary delves into that. Originally only in passing: While they had these thought exercises, true immortility (of the mind copy&clone flavor) did not become avalible until recently. While they had awesome medical technology (as long as they put the head into a cryokit quickly), there was still perma-death. Indeed at least one person per storyline/book died. Including one of the persons in above strip.* But the current book is all about that problem. It i…

So I am planning on running a space/science fiction campaign. I have never run one before. I have been a fan of science fiction (books, TV, and movies) for +40 years. I am thinking about running a campaign that has the flavor of Babylon 5 (multiple races, jump gates, capital ships capable of jumping on their own, large setting) mashed with Firefly (crew with some common history trying to make things work out). The game would be 75% role playing and 25% combat. It would be gritty (weapons are lethal and limited resistant protection). Because I don't know how this will work out (we might play in it for a couple of months and go 'ick lets stop') I don't want to invest…

I'm putting together a vaguely Shadowrun-inspired ruleset for my next game, to be run when my current D&D session ends. Hacking is a key part of cyberpunk but it's important to make sure that the hacker has a reason to physically be with the team, not doing it from a protected outpost somewhere. In classic cyberpunk fashion, cyberspace is an actual place you can experience via VR. But you can also just be in the normal world and partially experience it via AR (you get "arrows" over your senses, usually sight). You get up to +3 SPD for being in VR, and while you're in AR you attack at 1/2 OMCV anywhere outside of your actual line of sight, as opposed to your normal…

So I was thinking about how the majority of science fiction campaigns I see out there aren’t. Science Fiction campaigns I mean, at least not by the definition I grew up with. Most I see are science fantasy carrying along magic, sometimes called Psionics. Though the vast array of Psionic Powers usually blows right past simple mind powers and right on through to the realm of magic. And then I got to thinking about those settings that actually throttle back and stay Science Fiction. Practically all of them have blown right past any wonder and discovery and populated the universe with a few to dozens of alien races. Many, if not most, treated like humans in a rubb…

I am trying to make a character with a wide specrtrum detect. Or perhapes a multipower of detects? that can find life forms, energy readings, radiation levels, levels of toxicity in water etc... The thing is this is a fairly open ended number of detects. Would a variable power pool be in order for something like this?

I have an idea I call the Long Sleep. In it, the human race has wandered out into the galaxy and found life everywhere, but none of it very intelligent or even self-mobile. They decide to fix it. Using Deep Time Sleep Modules (whatever that is), the Sleepers engineer a few viruses (virii?) and go into the Long Sleep to await the emergence of intelligence. A powerful monitoring system alerts the Sleepers to threats to their project planet, and awakens them in an effort to preserve the project. These projects can last millions of years. Ideally, each Sleeper Team consists of 12 specialists who oversee various aspects of the project. They have almost complete autono…

Just a thought: A Star Hero campaign that combines Star Hero with Fantasy Hero. Race - Same A Fantasy Hero, races would have their own planet(s) Magic - Magic would run on Mana, some planets and parts of space have it some don't Weapons - Technology based but Fantasy Based as well. Lazer Swords & Axes. Crossbows & Bows that fire lazer bolts and so on Ships - Star travel but he race would have their own version of starships with some common ships as well. Thought about using ships from various other games, such as Traveller as well. Creatures - Fantasy based creatures to encounter and new "space" type as well. Just a idea I'm kicking ar…

So, Stellaris patch 1.6 came out. Then 1.6.1 that fixed the AI not decalring war. Now I got mods that also deal with Terraforming AI bug (it terraformed colonies like mad and senselessly, resulting in tons of lost resources). Another thing is that the Stock Human Race Traits were changed. Together with the Traditions, there is now a totally new Playstyle/Colonystyle for them. Species: Human Species Traits: Adaptable (+10% Habitability) Nomadic (Quicker Migration, Cheaper Resettlement) Wastefull (+20% Consumer Goods cost) Government: Government Ethics: Fanatic Egalitarian "Beware always those who would be despots, under the false presumption that their…

I can't quite call this a recommendation, but some people might want to read this. Exoplanets, by Michael Summer and James Trefil, can't make up its mind what it's about. First off, it isn't all about exoplanets; some chapters are actually Pluto and the moons of the outer Solar System, now revealed as complex worlds in their own right. This material, and the material that is indeed about planets in other star systems is mostly fascinating; but sometimes it's frustrating because the authors neglect to explain how astronomers know what they think they know. Some of what they left out I already know from other sources, but a book for laymen should cover these things. Th…
