Why do the ships in Terran Empire have two FTL drives? Okay it's a given that Terran Empire is a space opra style setting. I'm pretty familiar with this type of setting and I can't ever recall seeing this before. I have no problem about the idea of different races having different FTL drives. But that's not what we have here. We have one race using two different FTL drives at the same time and in the same ships no less. Why? I'd really like to know why Jim or Steve or whoever, decided to do this. Preferably by whoever made the decision. I could see the idea of the Empire using one drive in the 25th Century and switching to a more efficient one…

I am about to run a conversion of the star wars universe in Heroes. I am having trouble trying to figure out how to run modifications of equipment and droids. I was wondering if anyone had run into this problem and was looking for suggestions. Right now I have that equipment has a body value and a DEF value which is equal to the active points /5 which is huge for laser cannons that are multipowers. I want to represent that modifications are tricky business. In general I also want modifications to cause some sort of problem, quirks and the like. So far I have the idea to add a characteristic, or use the body characteristic. The character rolls their mech…

Okay bare with me here. I have a group that is...well...let us just say that they aren't to excited about playing a science fiction campaign. I on the other hand would love to GM a good sci-fi campaign my problem is that I don't know what campaign to use. The system should be obvious. No, I have Star Hero and Terran Empire. I haven't decided if I want to use Terran Empire or not, but I am thinking about it. So here I am planning to start a sci-fi campaign and looking for a setting when I thought this would be a good question for the HERO boards. What do you like in a science fiction setting? What do you look for as a player? What do you look for as a GM? Wh…

I don't own any of the new SF products HERO has been putting out besides STAR HERO. However, I've been developing something that might go into Digital Hero, so I was wondering: what format is used to describe an alien race as a whole (as opposed to a single character) in something the TERRAN EMPIRE? Is it a simple variant of the creature layout seen in the HERO SYSTEM BESTIARY?

As I sat here over my cup of coffee, I began to think back to the 'Project 3000' thread that set out to gather all of the names used by everyone for supers. Well, as I've been working on several SH campaigns and settings in various stages of development, I found myself looking through the same old links and the same books on my shelf. More and more I was starting to wonder if I had exhausted all of my potential targets for mining ideas. Instead, I thought, why not start a thread similar to Project 3000 that lists all of the books, movies, videos, DVDs, magazines and all related media in one place. At the very least it might make the idea seach a little easier for peopl…

My idea was an attempt to define a society not by a single tech level but by specific numbers related to the technology level of five basic areas. these are: Communications: 0. Pre-linguistic; no true language exists to allow communication between individuals. 1. Face to face communications; "spoken" language has been developed 2. Recorded language ; "writing" 3. Some form of signalling over a distance had been developed 4. Codified laws, political society has been developed 5. Mechanical distance communication (telegraphy) developed 6. Modern communication equivalents 7. Distance communicationm technology inherent (HRRP through implants) 8. Virtua…

I'm trying to design an alien species with a hive memory. This is not the same thing as a "hive mind." The individuals all have their own sense of self, and their own thoughts. They keep their own memories through their own lifetimes. When they die, however, their memories pass on to the next generation. My question is, how would you write this up? My first inclination is to go with some form of Clairsentience, but I'd like to see what other minds come up with. (If there are any questions about more specifics on the species, I'll be glad to fill in whatever I can. I'm only holding back now because I'm using a borrowed computer and this non-ergonomic ke…

Anyone out there ever want to play a micro campaign based on shows like Twlight Zone or the Outer Limits? I've alwasys wanted to do light sci-fi/horror using a world where weird things just happen. Like the Legacy series did for the supernatural. Characters 'generaly' stay themselves, but have to deal with ever stranger events day-by-day. This would be a very episodic game. With a lot of down time between sessions. (In the game world.)

I've been throught the Dune tread, but the shields in Fading Suns don't exactly work the way they does in Dune. So, if I can pick up somethings in there (the basics), it seems that it needs more. First, it doesn't explodes when one use a beam weapon against them. Then, I think that sucha shield should be something like 25 PD for 50 ED (it stops all the high vellocity projectiles, but the most powerful ones). Also, to stike the bearer with an HTH weapon, the oponent should use the hold his stike option to hit. That means that he used his weapon slowly enough and the shield don't work. If I remember well FS rules, the PD and ED should be less if mor…

Does anybody else think there is a problem with Star Hero gravity? In Star Hero, each G requires +5 str to operate effectively. However, G forces are linear, while str is exponential. 10G is 10 times the force of 1 G, but requires +45 str to operate effectively. Basically, a super that can easily lift a 70 ton tank can barely function in a 10G environment where he weighs about 1 ton. Shouldn't each doubling of G Forces require +5 str?

I've been lurking here for a while, and I haven't seen this posted yet, but this site was on slashdot earlier this month, and it's very cool as a resource for starships. http://personal.nbnet.nb.ca/merzo/ It has starships from almost anything you can think of, in scale. The images could be useful for counters if you like. Very cool for research - check the links page as well.

I made this post elsewhere (http://www.herogames.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=2700) but will make it here. I am moving forward with the project as part of a website of non-d20 gaming resources. I've been reading all the posts/threads about folks working to convert their favorite book/TV show/game setting to FREd and realized that what we all really could use is one place for everyone to put their work. What I am proposing is to host such a site. The ground rules would be: 1) I will not make any decisions on the specific conversions unless I am involved in that particular project. 2) The site will acknowledge all copyrights. 3) The site wi…

I picked up Terran Empire a while ago. And while I'm happy that I have a copy, I'm a bit ambivalent about the setting. To be clear, there's a lot I like about it: I like that the setting has so many built-in opportunities for stories and conflict. The different feel of the various monarchs suggest very different types of campaigns. There's some really nice art. Some of the nicest AD pieces I've seen, for example. The variety of the aliens is very impressive. I particularly like the fact that there isn't "a" bird-like race and "a" lizard-like race. I think the main problem I have is that I don't know what an environment in the Terran Empire looks like. Do people d…

Does anyone else find that the damages in Star Hero are too low? They range from about 3D6 RKA for a low level attack to 10D6 RKA for a high level attack. Contrast this with a .50 cal which does 3D6 RKA, and a 120 mm tank shell which does 8d6 RKA. Granted all the Star Hero weapons have mega range, but the damage is fairly wimpy. Then again, the Ewoks did crush elite stormtroopers (is that an oxymoron?) with spears and arrows...

Terran Empire mentions the existance of an Imperial Aristocracy but gives us no details. So I was wondering: What are the titles? How many points do they cost? What kind of authority do they have? How big are their holdings? Are the titles the same throughout the Empire or do they change from region to region? And so on. An expansion of this idea might make a good DH article.

Although it does not make stuff using the guidelines for Star Hero, I just wanted to let you know that Heaven & Earth (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/HEMailingList/) is one killer app. It generates material based on MegaTraveller rules, and generates everything from the sector map (note: sector, not just subsector) down to planet details. Nice and graphic, pretty customizable. I have used it for most of the many, many years of my space based heroes group... -Scott

The help I need is in justification for campaign feel. My friend is planning to run a Star Hero game, and he wants Martial Arts to be a major part of it, but he wants gun to work just as well- the kind of fight he is looking at (in general) is where the two groups shoot each other for a bit, then close and go to Martial Arts. Now he is a stickler for realism (or at least justificiation), and is trying to figure out why people don't just keep shooting. Techinical or social fix ideas would be appreciated. The ideas we have had- "New Bushido" a social / moral code that you don't shoot first, announce your intentions, HtH is better than guns ect. A velocity shield…

Other than a fairly rudimentary cost list in the TE book, there's no real indication what various levels of the Money perk/disad represent in the book. This is likely to be problematic for me in the near future, as I want to accurately gauge what kind of payment a potential employer would offer my group, and I am fairly unsure what would be good. Any help? Steve & James? Anyone else? jk

p.122: "...of Larry Niven's 'Known World' stories..." That should be "Known Space". This book rocks, BTW. My copy of GURPS Space is totally going on ebay.
