I'm not sure what kind of heroes are required for this investigation (thus the "Other Genres" listing) but if you need a plot seed, check out this article about the real life New Jersey Lagoon Blob: http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?file=/gate/archive/2003/08/08/MNoddblob.DTL know of any others?

One of my favorite subgrenes of anime and fantasy is the stories of people from our world who are drawn into a different one for any number of reasons. They can be ordinary people, but posess abilities they do not know in the other world -- they don't think they're hero material, but somehow they are. How would you work this trope in HERO? The very nature of HERO System character design prevents you from designing a character with powers he or she doesn't know about. But how would you play a character who has mystic, superhuman, or strange powers but doesn;t even know it in a system that encourages you to know what your character can do down to the last detail?

Teen heroes in RPG campaigns often display an alarming tendency to ignore their hormones in play. I'm wondering if there are possible ways for players of teenage PCs to roleplay the things real teenagers go through in addition to adventuring -- like falling in and out of love, having to make up an explanation why you didn't make your date without revealing you're really part of the sentai team that stopped that giant monster from trashing the city, magical girls who get crushes on their protector-type characters, that sort of thing.

Hello all, I'm relatively new to the HERO System, though I've played Champions in the past, I've never gained a complete grasp pf the game system (haven't played it enough at this point). With the release of the 5th Edition, I decided to get back into it. So on to the question: I want to create a game world that is fantasy in nature much like a Fantasy Hero game, but I want to keep the feel as "super heroic" as possible (i.e. change KA's to Normal attacks, etc.) and I want the players to be representations of various forces of nature, essentially low-powered avatar's of nature gods. I don't want them to be equals to say a Champions super hero but I wa…

Years ago (and I do mean "years ago") I started doing conversions from popular media to HERO. The first two I did (and I'm not sure which came first) was Battle Angel and the M-66. Well, I finally have gotten to them in my quest to convert all 450-475+ adaptions on my website to 5th Edition. So, here's the 5th Edition version of the M-66. Note the color text hasn't been changed much from the original write-up, which is why it might seem sparse and/or primitive compared to what I try to do know. But hey, I had to start somewhere. Enjoy. M-66 ANTIPERSONNEL AUTOMATIC INFANTRY ROBOT Val CHA Cost Roll Notes 40 STR 30 17- Lift 6400 kg; 8d6 HTH Damage 26 DEX 48 14- …

I've gotten my group hooked on Hero by running an "Iron Kingdoms" game using it. Now some of them are pressuring me into doing an Alternate WWII game with superheroes (basically "Godfire" but for Hero.) I have a great deal of knowlege of WWII being that my other hobby is Historical Miniatures. Still, the problem is, I am being held back by knowing TOO much of the reality. Even light super powers would disrupt everything. The Super Heroes would have to be extremely limited in number - otherwise I would have to reinvent the entire war. Nope, not on my watch. So where do I begin? My initial thought is to look at all the big turning points during WWII and figu…

How would you guys try to recreate the Final fantasy VII style of tehcnofantasy game (where the character start out somewhat above average and, as they adventure, become world-shakingly powerful). besides, I'm wondering how you can possibly carry around that whopping great sword without attracting all kinds of unwelcome attention....

A friend of my and I got into a discussion on hidden swords and different ways of hiding them from plain view. While we both agree the best way to handle Katana Space ala BESM or Highlander was to buy Concealment (with GM permission of course) with the limitation Blades Only (-¼ to -½ depending on whether it was all blades or only a particular kind), we were having a problem on how to best to deal with blades summoned or even pulled out from one own body. I know of 2 examples in anime; Anthy and Arashi where swords are pulled out the body (though I am not sure if Arashi counts as I do believe the sword remains apart of her and thus not worth any Foci limitation. Also…

I was trying to come up with something I /can't/ do in Hero, and this was about the only thing I came up with. Most if not all of the game is pretty straight forward, it's either Pulp, Magic, Tech or Heroic level stuff, but then come the possibilities.... I had one thought on how to do the possibility spending. Make it a VPP with restrictions like Opposed skill rolls, side effects (Possibility storms) etc. Can anyone else think of a way to do the possibility spending/storms?

Uh, hello. Welcome to my first post on these boards ever! But enough about me, i need a lil help. Im running a Martial Arts game using hte ultimite MArtist, (and im new to heros) I have a couple rule questions/concerns. Dodging. I need a way for this not to be such an arse saver. +5 ish DCV!? for only 1/2 and action and 1 END? Am i missing something? Or is that true. Should it be true, what do you guys recomend to make it less devistating? Ive been toying with the idea of a variable dodge. Spend end upto your dodge. So if you want to do a full dodge, 5END, if you think 2 will do it, 2 END. This will be done Before numbers are tossed around the room. …

Should pets or other beasts of burden if used as companion be paid for in character points or through money? It seems more natural to do it through money (after all, in real life you pay for your pets and utility animals), but on the other hand there's an argument to be made that you do give up some of your life experience in training, playing with, and just being with your pet or other close animal (like a cowboy with his horse). So, money or paid for as a follower?

For thsoe who've seen the anime... I just watched all 13 episodes and took 14 pages of notes. Conversion data and world info to follow in the upcoming weeks. I'm wondering if Arucard is going to break 1,000 points... I'm fairly sure he's going to shatter 500 and am pretty sure he will hit near 750.

I've been following discussions about LXG. I've been writing up my own pulp flavored game for a while now. The question I have is: When does pulp go from being a heroic game to superheroic? Or does it ever? I can see advantages for going superheroic once you reach a certain level of power (and suspension of disbelief). Let's take Quartermain for and example. I can think of three ways to write up incredible shooting. 1. Heroic game. Lots of range levels, OCV levels, levels with rapid fire, ect. 2. Heroic game. Use naked advantages useable on any gun. things like AP, no range modifier, autofire, ect. 3. Superheroic game. "Rifle mastery" multipower. …

For Fathers' Day my kids got me a DVD collection of "Speed Racer" episodes. The animation was much more primitive and cartoony than I had remembered (we're talking 1967 limited TV animation) but the characters and story lines were as vivid as ever. In our translations from anime to HERO System we've usually focused on superheroes, space conquerors, or giant robots. But "Speed Racer" provided a lot of action with characters who had to be 50-point normals. (I assume they got a certain number of extra points in order to build their specialized vehicles.) The Racer family and friends battled crooked drivers, smugglers, industrial spies, and plain vanilla gangsters while …
