Mental attacks vs automatons
Hi, If a mentalist attempt to hit a target wich is an automaton (but it's not obvious for the mentalist) with mental powers, does he knows automatically the target is an automaton when he uses his power, whatever the result of the attack (the attack acts as a discriminatory sense ) ? I.e, when the attack roll is made (whatever the result), the GM must say "you can't reach the target 's mind, it's an automaton" or can he simply say, "you didn't hit his ECV" or something else to let some suspicion about the target nature, or the mentalist is unaware of the fact and the attack is treated normally ? A computer question
Can a computer use a characters Foci (assuming the computer is built into the foci (a -0 lim in my games FTR). Ex: Armored Dude has a computer defined as part of his Armor, can the computer use the powers in the armor (for instance to activate the boot jets to fly are KO'd hero to saftey)

damage shield and area of affect
Good day! Read the f.a.q on both damage shield and area of affect, and didn't see the answer to these questions. 1. If I have a damage shield (say a vampiric cold so that anyone touching me takes cold damage), and someone comes over and hits me in HTH combat with the following power +7d6 HTH attack (flaming sword) would they still take damage from the damage shield? On one hand, it *is* a hand to hand attack. On the other hand, the attacker is using a flaming sword on my, not his hands per se. If I bought an EB to be an area of affect attack (say a cone). In combat can I reduce the size of that code (i.e. narrow the cone), or could I use the EB as a s…

Reduced Acceleration/Deceleration
TUV includes rules for improved acceleration and deceleration. Are there any rules to simulate decreased acceleration/deceleration? Meaning, how would you decrease the standard 5 inches/phase accel/decel. to 3 inches/phase? The Limited Maneuverability limitation didn't seem to apply. As always, thanks! Aroooo

Missile Deflection & Area effet Advantage
Bonjour, If Missile Deflection is built with the area effect 1 hex advantage, how manage it vs area effect attacks (1 hex, or radius centered on character, or radius not centered on character, and so on ....) Thanks !

Duplication Ranged Recombine
Evening, Since you can buy the advantage recombine at range with Duplication, can you buy an Increased Range adv on that adv? Basically I am seeking to increase the range at which a character can recombine. If you can, what would such a advantage cost? Standard +1/4 per 5x range? Thanks

Summon: Amicable
Summon with the Amicable Advantage at +1: can I make it leave at any time at will? Seems so. The creature can "leave whenever it wants or is coerced", while the +1 Amicable would seem to qualify as coercion. On a related note, aren't the EGO-based limits on tasks inappropriate for non-freewilled beings like robots? Hopefully, this is little more intelligent than my last question. I read the rulebook this time...

Dispell Followup
Okay, assuming the character wants (for what ever reason) to make it imposible to dispell it, can he use Inherent on it even though it still costs end?

Dispells on Long Instant powers
What happens if a Dispell is used on a Entangle that has already happened Ex. Glob man hits lasso chic with a entangle, Next phase Rat Man uses his VPP for a Dispell on ENtangles, can he dispell it even though the power is an instant that is not being used? Same question for summons Mage boy summons a demonling, Mage Girl goes the next phase and tries to dispell it

Newbie Endurance Question
Dear Steve I have just got FREd (and I love it!) but I am still trying to get my head around the rules. Just to clarify: natural movement that costs END (e.g. Running) has its END cost calculated from the total inches of movement, including (e.g.) the free 6" of Running. Is that right, or have I confused myself again? Thanks in advance!

Weight Decrease
Hey Steve; fractious players assaulting me with thier whacky character concepts again; a player wants to do the Gravity schtick and hit me 'which power lowers an opponents weight?" or something to that effect. which leads me to: Q: Is there a recommended way to decrease an opponents mass and only thier mass against thier will? This should be a real quantifiable reduction in mass, not a SFX handwave. Q: Is it possible to use Shrinking UAA to decrease a targets mass? RCMs and AF
1) Can you make multiple-maneuver attacks with Ranged Combat Maneuvers? 2) When making a multiple-maneuver attack with an autofire attack, does the autofire effect apply to each maneuver? For instance, if I make an Offensive Shot + Fast Shot + Far Shot with an AF 3 weapon and make my roll by 5, do I get 3 hits with each of the maneuvers? If not, what is the case?

Pushing/Aid: base or added damage?
Let us say that I push my 2D6 HKA (up to 2.5D6, for 10 END). Is this considered an increase in base damage (thus allowing a possible max damage of 5D6+1), or is it considered to be added damage (maximum still 4d6)? Similarly, is an Aid to my HKA considered to be an increase to base damage, or is it added damage? Thanks.

Extra Extra Limbs
Two related questions about the Extra Limbs Power: 1. I have a Champions character, The Creature, who has four arms and a tail. The two extra arms are fully manipulatory, but the tail has only limited manipulation. This costs the regular 5 points, right? 2. Suppose I have a Star Hero character from an alien species that already has Extra Limbs, but this individual has even more -- say, a four-armed Mon'dabi, or a six-armed character from the aliens with four arms (from the cover of TE; I don't recall their name). The Mon'dabi already spends (IIRC) 3 points for the tail; does this just upgrade the Extra Limbs to 5 points? The other guy already spends 5 points…

Breakfall after knockback
There has been an ongoing debate in our group about breakfall. If a character is knocked back, and fails his breakfall roll, can he, on his next phase, use breakfall to get to his feet as a 0-phase action? It has been made very clear that you can do this in situations other than knockback, but it seems to be only implied re: knockback. Thank you! Silbeg...

Casual strength
If a character has a strength of 50 is his casual strength: a) 25 45 a) is the number halved while, is half the characters strength, as 5p increase means your twice as strong. In 4th ed. it was a) but in 5th?

Advantage on an advantage
Is it possible to put an Advantage on another Advantage instead of the base power? For example, a character who purchases Explosion on his Str. The character wants to have Personal Immunity to just the Explosion part of the Str, but be vulnerable to Backlash from an Entangle for example.

Disadvantage for an invisible friend
Jack, an invisible, superstrong character is the imaginary friend of his Normal Dependant NPC, Jill. Consequently, we needed to whip up a disadvantage, but I have no Idea which to use to replicate the following effect: If jill recieves BODY or STUN damage, he automatically recieves the same. If her INT or EGO levels are lowered, his are by the same amount. He is only present in the real world when she is awake. He may never be more than 60 game inches away from her. I called it a 25 pt physical disadvantage.

Coordinated attacks 2
Hello, If 2 characters decide to make a coordinated attack, 1 with a grab, the second with a punch, how is considered the DCV of the target during the attack ? If, at the same phase & same DEX, the punching character wait the other successfully grabs (determined by a DEX Roll or a Teamwork SR), can you consider it's a coordinated attack ? Thanks

Hello, I have characters with 3-pts CSLs with coordinated attacks. Do CSL apply for all coordinated maneuver, or let say, 3 defined coordinated maneuvers ? Do CSL apply for DCV ? Do CSL apply for Damage ? Do CSL add with other CSL (i.e : 3 CSL with Coordinated and 3 CSL with HtH) ? Thx

Combining Powers
Sorry if this hasn't been asked before. I am trying to build a compound power... an 'Ultimate Entangle'. The idea being an entangle that resists virtually every attempt to escape from it or be freed from it. If successful, my victim will be entrapped for a considerable time, so I want to add a Transform power to the Entangle, giving her full Life Support if she doesn't already have it. Character example not "adding up"
I've been going over some of the character examples in the genre guide . I have two questions about the example character "Randolph Murdock" on page 35 of the genre guide. First. Under the "Powers" portion of the character. It lists "Martial Arts: Fisticuffs" but I can't find this in either the skills, powers, or martial arts sections of H5thEd. Then below this is a list of maneuvers. I have searched through the bookand the only place I can find the cost of the maneuvers in the examples of "Martial Arts Styles." The Second. For all the HERO GM's out there
Mr Long, I have really enjoyed this gaming site, and will continue to post things in the future. But, has anyone ever asked what advice you can give a starting GM? Is there any discussion board anywhere where people who want to become better GM's can look find some help? I have been a Champions player/GM for many years, though I see players who want to try GMing and have no clue as to what that takes. I'd volunteer myself to give advice and answer general questions, but isn't that your job???

Ablative follow-up
In the previous post you said this about multiple shots on ablative defenses: «Each hit that would reduce the Ablative Defense according to the Ablative rules at use in the campaign reduces it. Thus, five hits could potentially reduce the Activation Roll five steps, even if they all occur on the same DEX in the same Phase.» Would this include multiple shots from an autofire attack that does enough damage on every shot?
