This is long. Sorry. It’s written from the perspective of a Champions type game, but I think the issues have broad applicability, whatever the genre. I think it would be useful to have more discussion of the thinking behind game mechanics so we’re aware of the issues they can present and how we can use them to heighten playability. I’ve never really been a fan of the Killing Attack mechanic in Hero, even after the 6e changes, but maybe I need to re-evaluate my position. I decided to run identical characters against each other, but one using a normal attack and one using an equivalent DC KA. The results were interesting. I’ll get to them later. …

If someone was exceptionally fast in water, say 40m, and they swam straight up at maximum speed, how far would they go up after breaching upward out of the water?

I am looking to build a necromancer and want to create the ability to speak with dead. My first though was to use clairvoyance but that does not really work that well. The other way I am considering building it is to use transdimensional telepathy. I only want to be able to talk with the dead person so I probably only need to get surface thoughts. The communication only limitation looks like it would also fit this. I have bought a detect soul ability that has the perceive in a single dimension adder to allow me to see dead souls. What do you think of using telepathy to speak with the dead.

I cannot find the abilities that zombies have like Takes No STUN and No Hit Locations in Hero Designer. Where can I find these powers/abilities?

How would one build the ability to cut through a tree in a single blow? Is it just having enough damage dice, or would it involve an advantage like Armor Piercing? I was watching Blue Eye Samurai, and there are scenes where Mizu slices through a thick tree trunk (and others where bisecting armored humans happens). Is this just a matter of having a lot of damage dice, or is something else going on?

How much Strength would it take to knock a rooted tree over? I don't mean a young tree; just your average tree you see outside your window or in a forest.

Just wanted to think as to how players feel about the complexity of Hero Games. I personally like the extra items that you can do with Hero Games and feel it's combat system is one of the best out there. But could character creation be getting up a bit to far? What do you all think?

Basis for an information gathering specialist. HRRH, with discriminatory and analyze...I don't figure there'd be much argument about how well he could process the signal. Oh, and a great Cryptography roll, to break secure transmissions. But there's a lot of radio traffic out there, so if he wants to find a specific transmitter....... Sounds like Mind Scan, for the Radio class of "minds"? Make sense to folks? The Machine class is too broad, he can't read a computer. A radio typically has no EGO...for purposes of finding here, I'm thinking --the MDCV base would be 3; unfamiliar minds, and number of minds, apply. --for determining …

In a stereotypical martial arts movie, a student has to prove himself by quietly and slowly walking across rice paper. What minus would you give to the Stealth roll for this?

So as part of me filling out my world. I have been building magic items so far it has been streight forward untill this conundrum came up. How would you build a sack that looks completely normal on the outside as a sack but when you open it a ladder appears in the mouth to which you can climb down into a 8m x 8m room. This room can be used for storage or whatever. It is considered to be on another plane of existence rather than just shrinking. In which you can come and go freely unless someone outside has closed the bag shut. Which would be anything from simply closed shut with a hand or turned upside down. You can breathe normally here and the weather is cons…

How would you build a surface or an object that Clinging doesn’t work on? Some sort of drain on clinging built as a damage shield? Perhaps a Change Environment construct?

So I have been trying to create a spell that does an AOE that heals allies while at the same time knocks back undead. So far this is what I have got: Healing 3d6 AOE 4m Radius (Selective), Does Knockback Incantations, Gestures (Both hands), Requires Divine roll (-11), Knockback only works against undead and Demons Is this correct? The heal doesn't have to do damage to the unded, just knock them back. If I selectively heal allies in the radius does that mean the undead are not effected by the heal so therefore are not knocked back?

Howdy HEROdom! I've been looking more into HAPs for my upcoming campaign, and kind of dig the rules in the APG where Luck adds to the HAP roll. That said, how would Unluck work in the same respects? Would this subtract from the initial roll? Get roll by the GM to use against the player with the Complication?

Here we will present a situation that you might find you in. If you have the ability to accept, will you go for it? If yes, what repercussions will occur? If not, how reject? Recommend time for response will be one week, but if sufficient response comes in, can change earlier. Let's start: can get on the TARDIS, what is your decision?

Gang: Our game has a Max AP and I have a player that was going to make some followers. I'm not sure about the maximum CP that you can use for the NPCs (followers). In my game, the characters are at 350+ CP and I have made 75AP as the Max AP in the game. Being that if you used raw 75AP as the max, would mean the NPC followers would be a max of 375CP NPCs...literally more than the character themself. Is there an official RAW on this, or is there a good rule of thumb?

I've recently started toying with the idea of limiting the amount of regular PD/ED that characters can have but allowing them to buy additional PD/ED versus Stun Only (-1/2) instead of using the power Damage Reduction with that limitation. This would allow more BODY damage to occur with normal damage attacks, which seems like it would better fit some genres, like martial arts campaigns. Has anyone ever used this in a campaign?

In my last session of my CU campaign, the PCs were in Faerie and entered Dracula’s castle, expecting to meet the Count and slap him around for information on a case they’re working on (all the PCs are 700+ Points). To their surprise, the arch-lich Takofanes was waiting in the throne room when they burst in, with Dracula acting as his right-hand man. i opened things up with a PRE attack, using Takofane’s bonus PRE from the crown he wears (120 PRE total!). Rolling an 89 (putting everyone on the team in the +40 range), the three supers were immediately overwhelmed with fear (and two ran away in blind terror, leaving the group’s paralyzed with fear supermage to Ta…

I have been trying to crunch some numbers on the effectiveness of Damage Reduction vs. just buying extra PD. Now, As DR stops a percentage of incoming damage, it is more cost effective in campaigns with larger average attacks. However, for "average" supers campaigns, It seems that DR is break even at best in cost effectivness compaired to just buying extra PD or ED. Some examples: Lets say that the campaign standards are 12d6 is the average normal attack and 2 points per dc is the average defense. That means the average attack will do 42 points, average defence is 24, meaning average damage per hit is 18 stun. Lets say a character takes 20 points that they would…

Would it break the game if I allowed my players and enemies to attack at anytime they wish during there phase rather than forcing them to attack at the end. I wasn't sure why this is a rule.

This might be something I'm simply overlooking, but how would you pull off this effect with Tunneling: Character can move at normal speed (16m/Phase in this case) through up to... say... PD 6 material. For every +1 PD they can Tunnel through, their move is reduced by 2m. The only thing I can think of is a Multipower, but that feels very kludgy. The idea seems pretty reasonable to me. Thoughts?

With this current talk about Hero rules, I got thinking about something seldom discussed. If some ability ever were to get reduced to some value less than zero, would there be any effect beyond simply shutting off? With the primary characteristics, even at zero, they could still possess some kind of ability, but what about powers and skills? Are there any other considerations that should be brought out by going negative?

So, I was thinking about de-coupling Skills from Characteristics. Skills would all be costed similarly to General Skills from 4th/5th, 3 points for 11-, +2 points for +1 to the Skill, and Familiarity at 8- for 1 point. Then, what good are Characteristics? Complimentary Rolls. So, a higher Characteristic would result in better odds of boosting the skill with a Complimentary Skill Roll. Moreover, many Skills can logically be governed by more than one Characteristic. If we think of real world Acrobats, we tend to think of: Gymnasts, Circus Acrobats or Parkour. All of these, especially the two former, tend to be very physically strong as well as coordinated. So, A…

In the hero discord a discussion has come up about if a character has multiple powers that apply the same type of defense (For example, a force field that provides PD and normal PD) and only one of them has the Impenetrable advantage how does this apply overall. For some reason I remember discussion and/or a rules clarification about this but could not find anything. If someone could help direct me to an old post addressing this it would be appreciated
