Arrow Damage 1 2
by Gary- 32 replies

Why is arrow damage roughly comparable to handgun damage? According to numerous posters, Hero operates on a logrithmic damage system where each additional DC = roughly 2 times kinetic energy. A 9 mm pistol bullet has roughly 450-500 joules of energy and is rated as 1d6+1 damage in the book. However, arrows usually range from about 20 joules for a reed arrow from a light bow, to a little over 100 joules from an arrow from a heavy longbow. That would seem to imply that arrow damages should only range from 1 pip to 1/2d6. Anything wrong with my reasoning?

I have brother and sister Shadow Magi who when they are together have special powers. I want them to have to coordinate some powers and others are only usable when the other is within some distance (I'm thinking 2" or 4") What kinds of limitations should I use?

I'm appearing at RPG.Net's sponsored "Game Day" at Endgame in Oakland Saturday November 8th, and am looking for somebody to help out by running a demo or two (with luck, I may be able to play or co-run something) and hoisting the odd box. Benefits include free lunch and the opportunity to hob-nob with industry stars like Peter Adkison (who will no doubt be flogging GenCon SoCal), Chris Pramas (Green Ronin's head brain-in-a-jar), Aldo Ghiozzi (creator of Battle Cattle) and possibly a few more. Please let me know ASAP. Many thanks! dw

Hi there. It's me, with yet another question. I got this idea from the game Star Fleet Battles and I was wondering how to inpliment it in Heros. I have a continuous power that initially costs X END. Each phase that I keep it operating increases its END cost. So, in Phase 1, it would cost X END; in Phase 2, it would cost 2X END; Phase 3, 3X END... Phase N, NX END. How would I do this (assuming I can) Thanks MistWing SilverTail

Desolid and OIHID
by Guest Confusinator- 16 replies

Would you allow a character whose premise was the ability to turn desolid, buy a series of powers that affect solid, and then tack on OIHID for those powers, and saying they only work when the character is desolid? At first glance, I say yes. But on second glance I think that it may be a cheesy way of getting the affect solid advantage cheaper. But I am flip flopping. I think there should be some bonus for the powers only working when desolid, but OIHID is already at the lowest level, so it cant be reduced any.

I have the 4th edition bestiary, and have been planning to get the 5th edition version. But they apparently have about the same number of critters, so I'm wondering if it's worth the money, or if I can get by with 4th Also are the creature writeups "inflated" in terms of the logarithmic scale? Which is more accurate? MIke

I thought one of the major upgrades to 5th was making Change enviro worth points. But now it seems to be Too expensive. My confusion is based right now on one thing...what am I getting for the +1 vari advantage? I get the feeling that with the new adders, the +1 advantage is outdated...heres an example weather controll power... Change Enviro (-1 CV) 5 points Long lasting +5 points Muliple effects +5 points Variable effects +10 points Total caost 25 points REnd to 0 +1/2 Megascale (10 km per hex) +1/2 Total cost 50 points -1 to Char rolls/skills cost 8 each Temp levels cost 6 each so I buy -…

For a VPP with x2 AP limit, what advantage would you apply to the control cost? What about for a VPP with *no* AP limit? What should the advantage be? I'm thinking +1 for x2, and +3 for unlimited. Too low? Keep in mind that with only -3 in limitations, you could cram an 80 AP power into a 20 pt pool! And with -7 in limitations.... FWIW, I'm asking as a GM setting up a fantasy campaign. I'm thinking of having other means available to keep the balance. For example, if every power requires a skill roll at -1/10 AP, and using different skills for different magical "colleges," it's going to be very expensive for a heroic level character to use a 100 point power …

Instant Change and Linked
by Guest Confusinator- 2 replies

Hero Man has instant change to change him from Man on the Street to Hero Man in a flash of light. As Hero Man, he has an EC that includes Damage Reduction, Cost END to activate (making it a constant power) and OIHID. Hero Man wants his Damage Reduction to activate immediately upon change. So he decides to Link Damage Reduction to Instant Change. He can't use Damage Reduction before the Instant Change (OIHID), so he gets a reduced limitation value for Linked (-1/4). Is this correct? Seems like Hero Man is getting to save points for activating a power that only benefits him. I'm having a hard time seeing what the limitation here is.

Since LOS both cancels the Range Modifiers on an attack, and removes the Maximum Range from a Power, why are they both +1/2 Advantages? Melessqr

How damaged is damaged?
by Guest Kolava- 2 replies

I'm considering buying some "damaged" books from the online store, and would like the feedback of others who have done the same. Is "damaged" just a disclaimer to keep you from complaining if a corner is creased? Or does it mean I will be getting a soggy book with bite marks in it? Do you think it is worth the 5 or so dollars discount?

I have a character that has a base PD and ED of 6. I want to add 15 points of harded, resistant defense so I bought the armor power. Then I decided to make the base 6 of PD and ED hardened and resistant using damage resistance power. This would give me a total hardened PD/ED of 21. If I buy Hardened Armor 15/15 it costs me 56 points. Buying my base PD/ED of 6, with the hardened advantage, costs me an additonal 7 points. Total cost: 63 points. However, if I instead buy my base PD and ED values up to 21 each it only costs me 30 points. Then buying Damage Resistance with the hardened advantage I can get all of that converted into Hardened, Resistant defense …

Hello All. Okay, now for my dilemma. I am planning a campaign where the characters are essentially spirits that can inhabit other people. Basically the PC’s have two elements. 1) Element One This is an almost immortal spirit that has its own skills and attitudes. It is the base PC. 3) Element Two This is the host in which the PC spirit “lives.†The host has its own skills that the PC can use and even learn. For most of the campaign the PC’s will have the same host, but there is a possibility that the PC’s can change host. Now my question is how to best model this using the HERO system. How would you do it? What do you think would work be…

I want to create a heartbeat sensor that can detect heartbeats under up to 6' of rubble, or up to 50' of non-occluded space. What I want is something like an n-ray, but that suffers a penalty to PER rolls depending on the thickness of the obstruction. At first, I thought I could create a heartbeat sensor with a simple ranged, detect heartbeat, but that doesn't penetrate walls. Then I considered an n-ray for the hearing group, but that penetrates obstructions *too* well, and there's no limitation I can see that creates an n-ray of varying penetration. So now I'm considering a telescopic *and* microscopic enhanced normal hearing, but I'm not sure what…

I'm building an aid focus item (think cerebro) for my team's mentalist in our base. It's basically an aid station that would be "aid" for her Mind Scan so she can scan the city for trouble (or whatever). The Mindscan is currently bought up to 50 active points and residing in a multipower of 50 points. So, in order to add the aid points to the Mindscan, am I also going to need to buy an Aid for the multipower? Can I even do that? Ideas? Thanks..

Logarithmic math attempt at damage from the sun and nuclear explosions. Lets try this using my crappy math absent of things like proper energy terms such as newtons and jowls (please forgive the bad spelling) I will use the following assumptions as they must be made somewhere and we all know science is all about assumption anyway. 0 DC = Human Comfort zone 1 DC = First Levels of Human Intolerance (20^C or 36^F see excuses as follows) Humans Begin to take minor damage in temperatures outside of 0-40^C (32- With a human being comfortable at 20^C So lets pretend we have a tolerance of 20^C. (Although we know that we become uncomfortable way before these…

(Maybe this has been covered before, but...) First, I'm not sure that absorbtion is the right term, since 1) it's already the name of a specific power, and 2) it implies that the target character losses what the absorbing character gains, which isn't the case. Anyway, the NPC in question adds powers to her repetoir by consuming the genetic material of another mutant. Typically this would be done by drinking a bit of their blood. The problem is, there's no easy way to do this in HERO without giving the NPC gobs of XP every time she gets a chance to snag another power. I suppose there's the massive VPP, but that really doesn't have the feel. Any tho…

Recently, after a relatively successful get-your-feet-wet first adventure, I started working on the post-game paperwork (adventure recaps, etc.) I had kinda thrown the adventure together. Even though it went well, and everyone had a good time, I've still got a lot of work to do on fleshing it all out. I figured a good place to start would be those people and places which are most important to the players; DNPCs and Hunteds. Hunteds are easy. Most of them are straight out of the book. DNPCs are where I have the most hangups. I guess my question is this; How do you do it? Do you start with a given number of points, or would you go off of the examples for 'Ave…

I'm working on a character who's "power" is actually the droids he builds. So, for instnace, in combat rather than shooting a gun, he'll have 5 or 6 little floating ball robots flying around shooting or some such. Anyone have any ideas on a good way to build this?

Alright, new guy here and I'm just brainstorming some abilities with one of my future players. I wanted to get your ideas on how to build the following powers. 1. The ability to make inanimate objects harder\tougher. e.g. turn someone's clothing into armor. 2. The ability to walk on air, but not without effort and only across short distances. So here are my thoughts: 1. At first I had thought about using Aid to add to the DEF or Body of an object, but I'm thinking this is really a Transform ability. You turn someone's clothing into armor or you make a baseball bat effectively a lead pipe. 2. I'm thinking maybe Gliding with an activation roll …

Can gliding be used to represent weightlessness (I beleive it can) IF SO: Can a character take UAA on Gliding (Plus other advantages) to represent making something else weightless? and IF SO, would this allow a character to (assuming he has the mass for it) lift a battleship with a STR of 10? P.S. Working on a gravity manipulator

Hi There, I'm a long time fan of the system from way, way, way back when (81-82 ish). I picked up the hardcover 5th Edition rules recently and had a question on the megascale modifier. Could megascale, added to STR be used to simulate Superman-like feats such as moving planetary masses? And if so, would the planetary (+1 1/4) level listed on the table be the ricght VAL? Now, I know that the first response would be "use telekinesis for that" but wouldn't STR be as appropriate? I mean, characters with Growth receive some of the benefits of megascale in a not so megascale way (ie automatic AE style STR) so why not allow it to be applied to STR in a megasca…

Hello from RPG.net! I post over there as "Nero's Boot" (same as here LOL), and after reading the billionth pro-HERO thread over there, I decided to come over here and check your game out! At this point, I'm sold on the game. However, I have some questions before I dip into my wallet and buy the core rulebook. So what better place to ask than here, a board frequented by HERO fanatics! 1) Other than the genres mentioned on this site (supers, sci-fi, and fantasy), are there any other genres HERO does well? Would the system handle a mecha-based campaign easily? Could it do spaghetti Westerns? Could it do horror? 2) How intuitive is the HERO system? Is it…

Does anyone have any ideas on how one would duplicate the effects of a fever (or a disease that causes a fever)? How about any ideas on how to reproduce other common (real-world) ailments and symptoms? Thanks!

Instead of using Change Environment or Images, perhaps Transmit for Detect: light as a naked adder would work.
