Just wanted to let everyone know that our first new book in the Hero Plus line of e-books, Shades Of Black, is now available in the E-Books section of the Online Store! SOB, written by our own Allen Thomas, is a Champions adventure that pits the character against the evil Black Paladin and his followers. In addition to over 80 pages of text, the adventure has numerous maps (including a completely mapped out haunted mansion!) and three new villains. All this can be yours for a mere $12 -- so don't delay, order today! If you have any questions or comments, please post 'em in the thread of the same name on the Champions Message Board.

Ok, was doing laundry and watching "The Fellowship of the Ring" on DVD. As happens often I think about what is happening in Hero terms. Sauron basically has all of his powers locked into an OIF with the disadvantage Independent I believe. When he lost it, he lost all life force and corpreal body form. It takes 3,000 years for him to return to life powerful enough to start calling the One Ring again. (Discussion of the ring is worthy of it's own thread, but lets ignore it for now - the point here is how to get an inaccessible focus. Ok, since it is Inaccessible the only way to get it was to strike at Sauron's hand. How much body was needed To sever just the…

I was hoping to get herodom's opinion on a pair of limitations I'm considering. The first is a limitation to simulate supernatural foci that can be used by anyone, provided they have the force of will to use them. I wanted to use FrED's STR MINIMUM TABLE (page 328), replacing STR with EGO. I figured it would be fair, considering it costs more than STR does. BTW, could this be used in a superheroic campaign if the limitation were reduced (i.e. EGO Min 15-17 = -1/4)? Probably not, since heroic characters buy and find equipment, rather than aquire it with points. The second was for Invisiblity (only with the No Fringe adder) -1/4 Bright Ego Fringe. No fringe means …

I'm trying to start a campaign which uses a lot of Elemental Controls and I was wondering what more experienced Hero players thought of them. Why do ECs require things placed in them to cost endurance and under what conditions would you make an expception to this requirement? How do you handle defensive powers? It seems like if you bought a big EC, you would be forced to buy unusually high amounts of defense to meet the cost minimums. In a campaign where most powers are bought through elemental controls, nobody would be able to affect anybody. How do you handle characteristics placed in an EC? Do you normally just avoid this? Do you take No Figured C…

Has anyone ever used any of the Larry Niven known space races in their games? Many would be great in either space or supers games. I'd like to see writeups for Kzinti, Puppeteers, Thrint, Jotok, or basicly any other race he has used. I would espically like to see write-ups for Protectors, be they Pak, Human, or any of the ring-world races. Thanks ahead of time for the help.

I'm trying to simulate the "Omni-gadget" from the DC Heroes RPG (2nd ed.) not a powerful one, but it is going to be extremely flexible. To this end, I'm going to make it a small but very versatile utility belt (figure 20 active points). Now the snag. In the DC game, if you wanted to change the power the gadget had, you spent the requisite Hero Points and voilá, you had the new gadget. I'd like to do something along the lines of having the VPP be a blank slate and then state what gadget (or gadgets) are in the pool as it becomes necessary. Once stated, the gadget is "locked in" (i.e., he can't change/redefine the gadget without returning to his base). The spe…

To be able to fit a baseball into orbit (with a bat) and wreck (well, damage) something the size of the Hubble? Seriously.

I've a question regarding Energy Blasts and Ranged Killing Attacks, and the reasonable magnitude thereof. I'm converting a large number of blaster-type weapons from another system (Rifts). Most give damage in d6 increments, so for the sake of convenience, I'm just doing a direct translation of 1d6 MD to 1d6 RKA. (I'm reading SDC as Normal damage, MD as Killing damage. Easier that way.) At low levels, this works out fairly well. A Hero Colt .45 is a 2d6-1 RKA; a Rifts C-18 laser pistol, which fills roughly the same niche, is 1 1/2d6 RKA according to my system. However... at higher levels, I've got things like fusion blocks (a kind of bomb; most powerful is a 40d6 KA) …

My players and I are a bit confused on the use of the Power Advantage Cumulative with the Suppress Power. The description for Suppress describes it as open ended and cumulative (page 145), which would leave no reason to add Cumulative to the power. The Adjustment Powers text, however, cites Suppress as a power that might use Cumulative (page 75). Similarly, Drain is used in a sidebar example for Cumulative in the Power Advantages section (page 163), despite the fact that the FAQ disallows the pairing (Drain is already open ended). Is this all a big mix up, or are open ended Adjustment Powers usable with the Cumulative Advantage? And if so, what is the effect?

I having a physics brain-fart and need some help. I know the rate at which an object falls is 9.8m/sec^2 (or 32.2 ft/sec^2 in English) I am just having a hard time remembering how it works. If I do not have this right, please set me straight. I drop an object, and for one second, it will move at a rate of 32.2 feet/second. On the second second, it is now going 64.4 feet.second. On the third second, it is doing 96.6 feet/second. Is this right? Or am I way off? And at which speed does one hit terminal velocity? All I'm trying to do is figure out (roughly) "If I drop someone from this height, how long do the heroes have to save them?"

Ok, I've looked through TUV and Fred (but didn't see it mentioned), I have an idea how to do it but I was wondering if there might be a better way. Armored vehicles (tanks, APCs etc) have terrible awareness of whats going on outside when they are closed up inside the armor, this is why most tank commanders ride around with their head sticking out of the turret even when bullets are whizzing around (and also why guys on the ground can run up and toss explosives on or under tanks). The examples in TUV do not make any mention of this. What I was thinking of doing was adding a PER penalty, which is reduced when the position is unbuttened, so for example all crew members …

Okay guys, needin some help here. Here's the situation. Say this character has an EB, Offensive Damage Shield with Autofire 5. Would you say that I use the HTH attack roll to determine how many of the autofire attacks hit? Or, if the character hit his target, would all 5 attacks hit since it's a damage shield? Cat

I recently purchased and read through several of the new Champions 5th edition books. The characters "Nightwind" and "Jade Phoenix" are interesting, but very "experienced". Some years ago, back in 2nd and 3rd edition, I read about combination manuevers in "Danger, International", at least I think that was the book. Anyway, my GM allowed my character "Nightwatch" to retain the Combo maneuvers I had purchased. Would these manuevers be allowed in a standard game/convention? My reasoning for keeping them was that Nightwatch had received special training (akin to Yengtao)but his abilities were of a purely physical nature, no Chi' or special effects. What's the general op…

Hiya, I've got a character who has armor that is OIF Clothing. Suggest for me some ways to simulate the fact that it's rarely the same outfit. Special Effect. Do I just have her wearing a different outfit and write it off as a special effect that it's a different outfit with the same properties? Images. Just buy images for it with a focus and the set effect that it just changes the look of the clothing? Variable Effect Advantage. Some sort of advantage? 5pt duplicate foci. This could get expensive to cover an entire wardrobe. Thanks in advance.

In contemplating a build for a particular character who really is That Darned Good at parrying incoming attacks, I figured that extra Speed with the Limitation "Only To Block Or Missile Deflect" would be appropriate. However, I'm still a newbie (if apparently not an "incompetent" one anymore ), so I'm not sure what level of limitation that would be. My best guess would be -1. Opinions? -- Pteryx

Okay. There is a creature that when you are within a certain range of it you grow tired very quickly as your "life force" is drained away. I really don't want to do a BODY drain, because it really doesn't do damage until after a period of time. I would say it is more like drowning. My first thought was a CON drain. This would take into effect END and once the CON and END goes negative you start draining STUN and BODY as with drowning. What do you think? Or should it just be a straight END drain?

I'm looking for a way for my character to fully heal minor cosmetic injuries, such as bruises, minor cuts and scrapes, minor bullet wounds, contusions and the like, much faster than normal humans. She's already got Healing (Regeneration) to cover actual BODY damage. What I want is for her bruises and other external effects of the superhero lifestyle to fade completely in mere hours instead of days, and to leave no permanent mark. (She wants to keep that 20 COM, not look like an escapee from a horror movie.) How would I go about creating flawless skin? A cosmetic Minor Transform(Damages Skin to Flawless Skin) seems the most obvious way to go about this, but is there …

This is a bit of a rules question but it has a follow up. Can a character abort to become desolidified? This would make someone nearly invincible for 40 points, so I'm guessing the answer is no. If you can't, how would you simulate the ability to avoid attacks by becoming desolidified? DCV? I vaguely remember a thread about this but I can't find it with a forum search or check on the FAQs.

Okay, how would one build (IN FOURTH EDITION) a power that neutralizes the powers of anyone caught in the Area of Effect. This is how I THINK it is done, but want a double check: Power Neutralization: Drain xd6 (10 Pts per d6) Drains Points of Natural* Powers Ranged +1/2 AoE: Radius +1 Increased Area x4 +1/2 Affects all powers Simutaneously +2 Continuous +1 Concentration: 0 DCV -1 Increased END: x3 -1 AP per d6: 60 RC per d6: 20 *Natural Powers are defined as any power/special ability that is not enclosed in a Focus (Power Armor, Guns, Etc). Someone wanna help me out here?

Hi Hero Guru, I know long term memory changes are probably best done with Transform but...what about short term memory changes that require END? 1) Should I be using Mind Control, Mental Illusions, or Transform? My initial thought was Mind Control with the Telepathy option. 2) If I don't want the target knowing the source of the power or noticing the effect. Do I need to buy Invisible To Mental Senses at 2x cost (i.e. 2 x 1/2 = +1)? Should I just go for +20 effect? Will either work? See what I mean? Thanks Gents!

I was wondering why TUV and SH do not seem to have options for force fields or walls that are weakened by attacks and then are directly recharged by a set recovery rate or by spending END. For example, A 50 ED force wall on a starship gets hit by a laser cannon for 30 Body, so now it is down to 20 ED until recharged (either at a steady rate of recovery or by using the ships power source and using energy that may be needed elsewhere). This seems more like the way shields work in most Science Fiction movies like Star Wars or Star Trek (or at least the computer games based of these movies).

Ok, every once in a while I have trouble conforming my screwed up thoughts which I consider "common sense" to the cold logic of the game rules. Ultimately, all these decisions are left up to the GM. But i'm interested in a general discussion given the following scenario: Villan A has a necklace, which is considered an Inaccessible Focus as part of her powers. Now, FREd says that this type of focus cannot be hit with a Grab or taken away while A is in combat. This is where I get confused. I can understand how a necklace (or a ring, for that matter) could be considered inacessible, because in the difficulty in its being removed. However, I can also see, that …
