OK, I've been playing since FIRST edition, and generally can work out the rules for myself. However, this one has sat wrong with me since 5e came out. What am I missing? A 350 point character spends 150 points on Duplication. He gets Telkekinetic Sidekicks as listed on page 101. These duplicates should have 250 points and be identical to the originating character as they are not altered duplicates. But the base character has 350 points, not 250, so they can't be identical. More to the point, only the base character pays points for duplication. The duplicates, therefore, should only be 200 point characters - they have all of Base Character's points, less …

There's an item in my game that can teleport people back to the entrance of any area they've entered. Should I build the ability to return to an entrance as a fixed location, a floating fixed location, or something else? This is what I'm using so far: Escape Rope: 40" Teleportation, 8x Mass, 1 Fixed Location (back to the entrance), (AP 101); OAF (-1), 1 Charge (-2), Charge Does Not Recover(-2), Can Only Teleport To Fixed Locations (-1), (RC 14).

Last one for tonight - what is the rationale behind prohibiting dice being more than double DEF and vice versa? A character can have an entangle with only 1 DOD, or one with no defense, which would just as easily be accomplished by eliminating this restriction. Plus, entangle with no defense costs 4 points per die, when an extra d6 of entangle costs 5 points. Ent w/ 1 BOD is only -1/2, meaning I'm paying 6 2/3 points for +1 DEF instead of 5. Is there any logical reason for these costs to vary? I suspect a lot of these answers are derived from playtesting in the design process, and look forward to your insights. Thanks Hugh

Yes, I'm getting all my 5e Q's out now that I've registered... In general, I think Adjustment powers got slapped down in 5e as a reaction (or overreaction) to perceived abuses. Looking at some of the issues: 1. I could buy Absorbtion (or Aid) applying half to the stat I wish to raise, and half to Absorption to increase the maximum. This simulates unlimited absorbtion/aid. Why not just allow this as a +1 advantage? 2. Transfer now cannot be used as a drain if max points have been transferred. Why would someone not buy a Drain and a linked Aid? The Aid would also be self only, and limited to points drained. Seems to me that's much cheaper than a Tra…

Is there a limitation for a power which normally works well, but will occasionally "go off by itself"? Something like Havok's power sometimes fireing without him wanting it to, or Don Knott's six gun firing as it's holstered. "No concious control" does not seem to fit, usually the power is under control, with just an occasional "oops!" If there is not, should there be? I'm thinking of -1/4 to -1/2, depending on how long it would take to recover the END or charge the accidental discharge burns. All feedback and opinions gratefuly considered.

Basically the spell makes a person sleep for a week, but the power only kicks in when the target goes to sleep (basically, the user hits the person with the spell, and when they fall asleep they don't wake up for a week). I was thinking Mind Control w/ Trigger (When Victim falls asleep) and AVLD: Being Awake. Tack on Disad: Only to make person sleep for a week for -1/2 I think... Of course, it would have to have a continuous charge for one week What would ur take on this be?

I see this limitation often in the examples but I haven't been able to find it in FRED. What's the deal? What exactly does it mean "Real Weapon"? How are the other weapons not real? How come the example Bow & Arrow doesn't take it? In what way is it limiting other than being descriptive? Perhaps its' part of some other limitation but I didn't see it. Can anyone help me find it or give a definition of the actual limitation? I am not sure beyond "focus" and "independent" you would really need to define here.

I'm building a martial artist for one of my players. The character's primary weapon is a staff. I've built the staff as a multipower, after deciding that the character can use it in a number of ways. One of these is a "Staff Vault," in which the character can leap great distances using the staff to vault. I decided to build this as Leaping 10". The question is, what power limitation should I use to represent the fact that he needs a running start, in his intended direction of travel, to use his leaping? I've heard that using more than one movement type in a Phase is forbidden, but in this case it seems natural. Any suggestions? I'd been thinking of Extra Time (Full P…

Isnt leaping a bit overpowered? Or at least the length of the leaps. Say a character is jumping across a ravine or maybe at some sportinging event. A reasonbly fit npc for example can jump 2" in combat, horizontally. This means he can do it 4" non combat. So, most npc's or characters arent that far off from breaking the world record (which is 8.95 meters or so afaik?). My fantasy hero PC with 100 total pts + a bunch of experience with strength 18 can jump somewhere along the lines of 7" non combat? Which is just MONSTROUS. Is my math correct here, or did I miss something?

Wish me luck. I start a Champions campaign tonight at a FLGS with players who are completely new to the Hero system. Long time D&D players, and can even feel it in their characters (one wants to be a Demon/Dragon Multiform - I have talked him down a bit), it should be interesting. Luckily (I guess) I got to make their characters for them after they gave me basic ideas of what they wanted. I have found that, in order to avoid massive brain hemorrages, it is easiest to start out with basics - do not include such things as levels, do not have any 'real' range modifiers, and keep to the basic EB and RKA's. Next session, I will probably introduce Range modifiers a…

I hunted through the forums and FAQ, but didn't see anything specific to this question: How would you build a device with multiple parts (powers) that all ran off the same continuing fuel charge? (Not dissimilar to an END Reserve.) The Spiderman web shooters was close, but not quite. I know I could just give all the powers the same limitation (1 Continuing Fuel Charge), but that seems to me like each part had its own fuel supply. And a large END Reserve with no REC seems clunky to me. I want to build a space suit - life support, mag boots, radio, etc, that all draw off the same 'battery' that lasts for, say, 8 hours. Aroooo

Something I came up with talking with Xandar about our current game, there is no power that suitably emulates gas effect weaponry or spells. So I came up with the following idea, and thought I would post it here for discussion and polishing ideas from you all. Gas Effect- A.O.E/Duration Mod (+1 1/2(?)) The power under this effect will affect a radius of hexes much like the normal explosion AOE modifier, but on the first segment of activation would only affect the Target Hex, each segment thereafter the effect spreads out 1 hex in a radius pattern, until its full AOE is reached (would be the same as normal Explosion). On the next segment after maximum area is covere…

I'm at work, lazy, without FReD, so I am posting here my questions as I doodle a character on Hero Designer. I have created a speedster character that already has a double KB HA. I want to create a type of 'sonic boom' where when he runs by multiple targets, they take a knockback from his passing. Would just doing a Multiple Move-By with standard HA damage (including KB) be appropriate? Also, about Megascale movement, if I create him Flying, only while in contact with surface, at a MegaScale of 20KM, does his turn mode suck? "Nice speed there, Jim. And you made a pretty design on that wall..."

Okay... how do I go about figuring XP awards in a 75/75 level game? The game is Modern Day Horror (translation: Monsters in a Moder Day setting). I was thinking that find magic items and gaining Contacts would be one way to handle it... but I'm not gonna load the PC's with Magic Items (doubtful there will be even 1 item per adventure). And what about XP for encounters. For example, the first encounter will be a pack of 8 Dire Rats (built on 25/25). How do I calculate XP for that? What about 4 Zombies built on 75/75? A Necromancer built on 75/75 with a 25 XP Bonus? Majorly in need of help here...

I've got an idea for determining the relative combat power of characters. Before I post it, though, I was wondering if there was anyone out there with more programming ability than me who would be willing to turn it into a GUI-based (or, heck, text-based!) application, because it's pretty calculation intensive. In general, the idea is that it takes two characters and applies a couple of formulae to determine the relative combat power. A GM could also use the campaign's average CV, SPD, DC, and so forth to see where a character falls in relation. Any takers?

I'm trying to create an advantage that gives familiarity with all possible weapons for a martial arts themed game. Based on the campaign world I'm going to make and the cost of buying the familiarities the normal way, I've estimated the advantage's value at 30 points. Has anyone else tried to do this yet or seen it done?

Inspired by a thread on the Champions board, I went through the FAQ and pulled out stuff that I thought was above the level of interpretation -- new Adders, restrictions on powers that might not have been clear in FREd, etc. This is *my* interpretation of what's most valuable or useful. This is not an official company interpretation and has not been reviewed or approved by Mr. Long. Obviously, everything in here is subject to change, as the FAQ evolves. My intent is to update this as the FAQ changes, but for the most up to date info, check the FAQ. Some of the names for the Modifiers, Adders, etc. are made up – the FAQ doesn't give a name, just a rule. FAQ Summ…

I'm planning to run a campaign in the Champions: the New Millenium setting, but using Hero 5th for the mechanics. I'm in the process of converting various characters from that setting, including some that never had write-ups. One has me scratching my head a bit. I have an approach for it, but I'd appreciate how others would do it. There are four psionic villains collectively known as PSI. Besides their individual psionic abilities, they can create a "construct" called Psion. Normally this would be a straightforward summon, but the construct gets more powerful the more of them use their abilities to create it. Thoughts?

I'd like some GM advice on adding items to the battlefield for players to use during fights, or even during non-combat time. One former player used to have a great visual sense of what items would be in a given room (chemical lab, night club, bank lobby, etc.). His character was somewhat underpowered--a skill-centered martial artist--but he used the environment brilliantly to his advantage. The really nice thing was, he'd suggest or ask if an item was there and it always made perfect sense. I've had other players who suffer either from (a) lack imagination or (b)a lack of common sense. I've experienced far too many, "it's a chemical lab so there must be …

Ok I have a ranged killing attack (1d6) with which I would like to use martial arts maneuvers (the special effect is a bow with arrows appearing). My questions are this... is it legal to use a killing attack with a martial art move and how do you figure damage? Also any ideas for some sort of entangle type effect (i.e. pinning someone with arrows to the floor or wall)? Could I make it a martial attack or would I have to make up a new power for it? I have bought the weapon skill bow and all the maneuvers would be the new ranged martial arts attacks. Help I'm lost : (
