I'm building a power called "Gungate", which consists of a "naked" Indirect advantage that can be applied to up to N Active Points of firearms, allowing them to be fired through briefly-open teleportation gates. I want to add a couple of Combat Skill Levels, to represent the sort of "perpetual surprise" bonus that comes from a weapon that can open up on you from ANYWHERE. Is this a valid 3-point CSL?

I've tried the FAQ, the book, and a couple of forum searches, so I hope I'm not wasting anyone's time. 1) I'm trying to figure out if the Mental Group counts as a targetting group for the purposes of buying Invisibility. What is the exact criteria for determining what constitutes a targetting sense group? 2) If the criteria is "any group that has one or more senses that can be targetting senses at no extra cost, regardless of whether or not they are targetting 100% of the time" (i.e Mind Scan, Danger Sense), can you buy Invisibility against Danger Sense at the 3pt level (Invisible to a non-targetting sense) and be invisible to it as long as the person with Dan…

I recently did some research on Asperger's Syndrome (High Level of Function Autism) and thought it would be an interisting (and chalenging) disability to roll play. My problem is two fold: (1) how would I stat that on my character sheet? (would it be a pyhsical or psychological disability, it's a bit of both) and how many points should it be worth and (2) How much of Asperger's Syndrome should I roll play. Asperger's Syndrome has a gamut (sp?) of symptoms as a player which should I focus on? Any feedback is very welcome!

SPOILER WARNING ... I'm referring to something that happened in X2, so if you haven't seen the movie and don't want to be spoiled stop now! * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Okay, I think that should be enough spaces. How would you right up Jean's ability to hold off Scott's energy blast? How can TK grab something that is essentially light? That makes no sense to me. I can see it with water, since it's physical, but Cyclops' blast stymies me.

Okay this is what I am trying to do in the simplest form... I want to be able to "cast" a major change mental illusion that effects several opponents at the same time (or in the same phase). Now, I have narrowed it down to two options - 1. Buy Mental Illusions with auto fire (2-3) at +1 1/4 (because it's not an EB or a RKA) 2. Buy Mental Illusions with an AoE Are there any other options I am missing? I have a feeling it will be more expensive for me (from and END perspective) to buy it as an autofire, simply because I would have to pay the END for each shot. Where as the AoE would be a one shot deal in regards to END. Also I am only looking to do M…

I'm trying to iron out for my own benefit how an area effect ego attack would work for purposes of rolling to hit. I'd bug steve directly, but he gets plenty of these questions that he has to refere elsewhere. I'm trying to remember how the attack is resolved. If it's AOE then I'm able to target the hex? Is the hex dECV 3 also? (Seems kinda odd. Would seem like an easy way of hitting a mentalist whom you can't normally defeat in a straight up mind-to-mind ECV roll. But that's kind of the case with DEX and regular attacks AOE.) I managed to find a little snippet in the FAQ about being able to dive for cover against such attacks, which indicates to me that y…

I just purchased Conquerors, Killers, And Crooks, and and in the write up for Black Diamond saw that Hunted: -8, NCI, capture is listed as 25 points. When I work it out, it comes out 20 points, assuming Capture is the same as Harshly Punished. Where do the other 5 points come from? Is there a rule I am missing, and if so where can I find it? Chris

Something came up in the game I was playing in this evening when one of the characters, being attacked by a huge snakey monster critter, wanted to do that classic thing where one props open the monster's mouth with a stick — in this case, a staff. If you've seen "Return of the Jedi", when Luke was being chased around Jabba's pit by that enormous slobber-beast he stuck a bone into its mouth so that it couldn't bite down on him. That's the exact effect we were looking for. How would you resolve this? I was thinking along the lines of a Block, with the whole "stick in the mouth" thing being nothing more than SFX. But how would you deal with the ongoing effects — in…

Is it posable to buy followers and bases with a Variable Power Pool? I say, prehaps it is, as it would simulate the late Golden Age and early Silver Age villians rather well (especaly any Batman villian from that time period). But what does FRED say? What do you say?

How could you simulate the time-altering abilities of the people that are plugged into The Matrix from the outside? Abilities like those demonstrated by Neo, Morpheus, Trinity, and the others? In GAME terms, they can do things like make long jumps, fight really good (high OCV/DCV), and the like. But those things don't seem to capture the flavor of the setting. Any ideas for character creation within the Matrix universe? ~J

Since Steve doesn't seem to want to answer this one, I'll ask the peanut gallery. Does anyone out there feel that putting end reserve on charges could possibly be balanced? Would anyone ever allow it in their campaign?

I'm new to the HERO system, and haven't used it yet. But I've read through the book, and I know the system passably. But I still need some practice, apparently. My friend wants to learn it too, so I'm helping him learn it by doing an example for a game he wants to do. So here it is. This transhuman race has a bite that excretes a paralytic poison. The race generally uses it to hunt prey of many sizes. The race is vampiric; it eats blood. The poison in the bite can be extracted and used in other ways, poured in a drink, on an arrow, whatever (so Trigger, I guess). The poison must be able to get past the skin, but otherwise it can be used in many ways. The…

When buying a program for a computer, what level of detail (or how much info) is necessary when defining the program? Also, how much info can be included in a single program? I ask only because some tasks would seem to be more detailed than others yet the cost remains constant regardless of the difficulty. For instance, "Pilot starship from System X to System Y" would be a bit more complex than "Drive ground vehicle from Address A to Address B." Charlie

Given a setting/period with a strong class system (for example, England pre-WWII), would this be a valid Social Limitation? If so, what value would you give it?

I'm building a mage character who uses several magic crystals. The mage can use his abilities without the crystals, but only at very weak levels. The crystals focus and amplify the mage's natural magical abilities. Any mage can use these crystals, and mages are a significant minority of the population (cities have at least several dozen). Crystals are common enough that every mage has at least one, though it may be a poor/weak crystal. The natural versions of the powers are limited to 10 active points in the powers (2d6 EB, 5" flight, etc). The crystals are both Focus and Independent. Focus because he can't get the enhanced powers without the crystals, and indep…

Here is another one I am asking steve and thought I would get oppinions. Hello Steve I was talking to one of my players when the idea of a flash vs. Mental Awareness came up. Would a flash vs. Mental Awareness allow a character to reduce another characters DECV to 0 the way a flash vs. Sight could allow you to potentially drop a characters DCV to 0. If so then would you simply apply the rules for a regular flash or would you need new ones made up? Also could you then consider you other senses as non targeting senses for the purposes of rolling a non-targeting perception roll to get 1/2 DECV and OECV.

Keep in mind I'm stuck with 4e... Anyway, my mystic character in my PBEM game has a few XP to spend, so I want to purchess a Summon Spell (going for a lesser dragon). How is "Slavishly Loyal" done? Is it a power advantage or extra point I spend in the base cost?

While discussing X2 and one of its scenes, the subject of a powerful telepath controlling a group came up. Obviously, one way to do it is to buy Mind Control with AE. Another idea is to double the number of targets per +5 points. Now, would that be best as a separate Power, or should any mentalist be able to do it a la "spreading an EB"? So to represent mass Mind Control, I have the following options so far: OPTION 1: 60 Multipower 6 u 12d Mind Control 6 u 6d Mind Control, AE Radius This is probably the "purest" way per the existing rules. OPTION 2: 60 Multipower 6 u 12d Mind Control 6 u 6d Mind Control with 30 point…

Okay, so I'm getting ready to run my first campaign (in a long time) and I started reading up on money. I've checked out a few threads on the boards, as well as FREd, Star HERO, and the BBB. I understand that in Champs games, if you can reasonably have it, espcially on a middle class income, then there you go. But if it gives you Powers (i.e. a focus such as a gun or laser cannon) then you have to pay points. And in a heroic-level game, Star HERO for example; almost all of your 'powers' are bought as equipment that can break, be stolen, damaged etc. Well, it occurred to me that most characters are people too. They have lives and most will have jobs. This i…

I don't know if this sale is nationwide or not, but my local WOTC store is selling all non-WOTC published gaming books at 70% off. The manager said that non-WOTC published stuff just wasn't selling very well, so they were having this sale and were going to stop carrying so much non-WOTC material. I picked up the HERO System Resource Kit for about $8.00. It's something to look into if there is a WOTC store near you. Hero Games cheap!

I call to your wisdom, my fellow hero-system worshippers. I try to use 2-3 house rules on some powers and i would like to get some opinion/advice. 1) Clairsentience I'm thinking about extending the concept of fixed locations from Teleportation to apply them to claisentienc as an easier way to define close circuit TV cameras, or bugs. (i don't really like the way these concepts are done in the book) 1 fixed location (clairsentience) 5 floating location (clairsentience) The thing i wonder about is : if a PC has both clairsentience and T-port. will the locations be common or limited to one power? I mean : shall I use a "only for t-port/clairsen…

I'm having a hard time wraping my mind around the concept of Skill Levels. What do they represent? Isn't having points assigned to a skill already enough to represent expertise in that field? Why take Skill Levels at the 3+ point level? And if you buy it for a tight group, you have to switch where the bonus is going as a Zero phase right? Electronics to Security Systems, etc? Funny thing is I can understand penality skill levels just fine.
