I'm new to the HERO system, and haven't used it yet. But I've read through the book, and I know the system passably. But I still need some practice, apparently. My friend wants to learn it too, so I'm helping him learn it by doing an example for a game he wants to do. So here it is. This transhuman race has a bite that excretes a paralytic poison. The race generally uses it to hunt prey of many sizes. The race is vampiric; it eats blood. The poison in the bite can be extracted and used in other ways, poured in a drink, on an arrow, whatever (so Trigger, I guess). The poison must be able to get past the skin, but otherwise it can be used in many ways. The…

When buying a program for a computer, what level of detail (or how much info) is necessary when defining the program? Also, how much info can be included in a single program? I ask only because some tasks would seem to be more detailed than others yet the cost remains constant regardless of the difficulty. For instance, "Pilot starship from System X to System Y" would be a bit more complex than "Drive ground vehicle from Address A to Address B." Charlie

Given a setting/period with a strong class system (for example, England pre-WWII), would this be a valid Social Limitation? If so, what value would you give it?

I'm building a mage character who uses several magic crystals. The mage can use his abilities without the crystals, but only at very weak levels. The crystals focus and amplify the mage's natural magical abilities. Any mage can use these crystals, and mages are a significant minority of the population (cities have at least several dozen). Crystals are common enough that every mage has at least one, though it may be a poor/weak crystal. The natural versions of the powers are limited to 10 active points in the powers (2d6 EB, 5" flight, etc). The crystals are both Focus and Independent. Focus because he can't get the enhanced powers without the crystals, and indep…

Here is another one I am asking steve and thought I would get oppinions. Hello Steve I was talking to one of my players when the idea of a flash vs. Mental Awareness came up. Would a flash vs. Mental Awareness allow a character to reduce another characters DECV to 0 the way a flash vs. Sight could allow you to potentially drop a characters DCV to 0. If so then would you simply apply the rules for a regular flash or would you need new ones made up? Also could you then consider you other senses as non targeting senses for the purposes of rolling a non-targeting perception roll to get 1/2 DECV and OECV.

Keep in mind I'm stuck with 4e... Anyway, my mystic character in my PBEM game has a few XP to spend, so I want to purchess a Summon Spell (going for a lesser dragon). How is "Slavishly Loyal" done? Is it a power advantage or extra point I spend in the base cost?

While discussing X2 and one of its scenes, the subject of a powerful telepath controlling a group came up. Obviously, one way to do it is to buy Mind Control with AE. Another idea is to double the number of targets per +5 points. Now, would that be best as a separate Power, or should any mentalist be able to do it a la "spreading an EB"? So to represent mass Mind Control, I have the following options so far: OPTION 1: 60 Multipower 6 u 12d Mind Control 6 u 6d Mind Control, AE Radius This is probably the "purest" way per the existing rules. OPTION 2: 60 Multipower 6 u 12d Mind Control 6 u 6d Mind Control with 30 point…

Okay, so I'm getting ready to run my first campaign (in a long time) and I started reading up on money. I've checked out a few threads on the boards, as well as FREd, Star HERO, and the BBB. I understand that in Champs games, if you can reasonably have it, espcially on a middle class income, then there you go. But if it gives you Powers (i.e. a focus such as a gun or laser cannon) then you have to pay points. And in a heroic-level game, Star HERO for example; almost all of your 'powers' are bought as equipment that can break, be stolen, damaged etc. Well, it occurred to me that most characters are people too. They have lives and most will have jobs. This i…

I don't know if this sale is nationwide or not, but my local WOTC store is selling all non-WOTC published gaming books at 70% off. The manager said that non-WOTC published stuff just wasn't selling very well, so they were having this sale and were going to stop carrying so much non-WOTC material. I picked up the HERO System Resource Kit for about $8.00. It's something to look into if there is a WOTC store near you. Hero Games cheap!

I call to your wisdom, my fellow hero-system worshippers. I try to use 2-3 house rules on some powers and i would like to get some opinion/advice. 1) Clairsentience I'm thinking about extending the concept of fixed locations from Teleportation to apply them to claisentienc as an easier way to define close circuit TV cameras, or bugs. (i don't really like the way these concepts are done in the book) 1 fixed location (clairsentience) 5 floating location (clairsentience) The thing i wonder about is : if a PC has both clairsentience and T-port. will the locations be common or limited to one power? I mean : shall I use a "only for t-port/clairsen…

I'm having a hard time wraping my mind around the concept of Skill Levels. What do they represent? Isn't having points assigned to a skill already enough to represent expertise in that field? Why take Skill Levels at the 3+ point level? And if you buy it for a tight group, you have to switch where the bonus is going as a Zero phase right? Electronics to Security Systems, etc? Funny thing is I can understand penality skill levels just fine.

Okay, my character Shifter (A Teleporter/Martial Artist), is trained in every form of martial arts known to man. To represent this, the GM recomended I do a multipower, but I think a VPP would be more appropriate, so here goes: Martial Arts VPP - 30 Point Pool (Base 30) Control Cost (Base 15) Can change skills as a 0 Phase Action (+1) No Skill Roll needed to change Skills (+1) Limited Class of Skills (Martial Arts and CLS only) )-1/2) Total Cost: 60 Points Basically, my guy is a formerly trained assasin (was inspired by X-2), who while under the control of VIPER, was extensively trained in ALL Martial Arts (skills are the followign: Akido, Jud…

I need some help with this. I've been muddling with this for several days, and after going through forum threads and the rules, have not found a satisfactory way to do this. So, here goes: I'm working on the B5 ships, and I think I've settled on the armor 'scale' for lack of a better descriptive. Now, all the ship's armor is Ablative (-1). This works good for similarly sized ships fighting each other. But where it breaks down is Fighters against large ships: currently the fighters can't effect the larger ships because their armor is greater than the max damage of the fighter's weapons (so no ablative degradation). For most sci-fi genres that would seem fine, but in B…

A change in policy has made it possible for us to start selling our books one month after they are first available to retailers. So, you can now buy The Ultimate Vehicle , Terran Empire and Millennium City from us directly.

How do you simulate the "pot shots at the feet get them a'moving" schtick? A Pre Attack or Mind Control? A player brought me a Usable on Others, 10" Running, Ranged, Not Vs. Fully Resistant Def in his gun multipower which just seems strange since this would get Godzilla to move if he didn't have every point of PD/ED resistant and even if the UOO Not Vs. X conditions were expanded this would still make snail suddenly very fast. I want to tell him no but I want to give him an alternative. He at first wanted a DEX-based Mind Control (that I couldn't even get my head around).

The character concept I'm working on is a precognitive whose power has been "linked" to an experimental regeneration treatment he was given, so that his body immediately produces the best possible defense against whatever attack he's about to suffer from - raw damage, environmental dangers, etc. I've chosen to represent this with a Variable Power Pool, character has no choice regarding powers or when powers change, etc. My question is: Since the activation of the pool takes place outside the character's conscious control, do I need to also buy Zero-Phase Change and No Skill Roll? Or are these things implied by the limitations already taken?

My elf just incidently leveled a very large area of california forest and prime real estate. She has a magic VPP of 20 points and I was wondering what combination of what would be best to cast to make the forest regrow and heal the land? Basically I am looking for something to regenerate the land and make it green again and filled with tall trees and such. ChipDancer

I have a player who wants to make his force field so that if he moves (such as being knocked back, picked up by the villain, what have you) the FF will automatically turn off. At this point I'm presuming that means that he can't move with it on either (such as running). Apparently he's a mentalist who tends to set up camp in a spot and launch his attacks for the team from that spot. What level do you set this at? Sounds pretty limiting to me. Probably over a -1. Suggestions?

The well-worn barroom doors noisily slap behind Matt as he walks into the place. Dried blood and wet beer stain the floor and a thick cloud of stale smoke hangs at eye level in the dim light of yellow-burning gas lamps. The poker players and the drunks go quiet, sensing the coming confrontation. Gentleman Jim slowly rises from the card game, and straightens his San Francisco silk vest. Calmly, with the arrogance known only to those who never lose, he faces Matt. His hands do the normal things hands do; check his pocketwatch, straighten his tie, smooth his shirt sleeves - never straying far from his pearl handled revolvers. Matt peripherally notices two of Jim's hired guns…

A new player in my new campaign wants to build a gadgeteer. So far, he has a Variable Power Pool for his gadgets, that he can change only in a lab. Nothing difficult there. But the player wants to have a group of robotic minions that he can create from nearby electronic/mechanical items. For instance, if he's on the battlefield fighting some foe, and there's a nearby ATM machine, he can concentrate and the ATM machine will draw upon nearby materials and reform itself into some type of lumbering robotic creature that attacks the foe. He understands that in this case it wouldn't have a chain gun or other weapons (perhaps armor, as ATM's are built pretty solidly?) e…

I'm running a heroic-level game, where equipment costs money, not points. Most of the characters theoretically have incomes and their "bank accounts" are supposed to be incremented monthly. However, I usually run in a sort of timeless mode: time passes during a game and duration between runs is variable - I only declare a "new month, more money" when someone reminds me. And, of course, I have to keep track of how much money each character is supposed to have. This has become a bookkeeping chore. I have thought up an alternative and would like some opinions on it. 1. Define annual income (ignore tax issues). 2. Define "annual disposable income". This is what is…

I've read some of the old discussions about 4th/5th ed products and I'm still in doubt about getting this one or not. Specifically : how much material is new/altered here and what (globally speaking) are the differences between the two editions? Thanks in advance for your help!

I've always wanted to see a supplement with lists of first and last names for characters, broken down by region or nation, like the one for Oriental names on p. 114 in the 4th Ed. Ninja Hero... In lieu of this, since I can imagine what an undertaking that might be, do any of you have sources, such as websites, for names? Any input would be appreciated.
