This thread is for storing and sharing any ideas related to rpgs. The level of detail or completion doesn't matter. It's meant to be a place to put in ideas so you don't forget it, or want to revisit it in the future, or just because your players wouldn't be interested in the ideas. I got this idea when rereading my Rolemaster books. There are so many different types of spellcasters, most of which specialize in one form of magic. So I thought about a possible campaign where all magic must focus on a single aspect. There won't be generic wizards casting fireballs. There will be healers, oracles, alchemists, and other specialists. Magic will be more utilitarian …

One of the things I'd like to do (but not a resolution) this year is establish regular writing habits. Blogging is one way to do that. I figured I'd pick a couple of subjects and write at least once a week about them. Then I realized that the forums no longer have a blog function! So, we get this thread . . . I'll be attempting to post every Friday about the inanity that was my week in MMO gaming. I may mention other computer/console but non-MMO activities, but the bulk of my computerized gaming time is on MMOs, so there ya go. Feel free to jump in with anything you have to say related to MMOs, not just responding to my babbling. Create some new babble of your own…

The Take Aways I've had from this are Races are the rubber suit your character wears. Feats come from backgrounds. It's just a tweak. re-adjustment and overlay of 5e rules. That D&D Beyond will be your character repository, and that their Unreal Engine Gaming environment will most likely be subscription based, collecting from all participants and will duplicate a lot of Tabletop Simulator's features.

While updating various files in preparation for the upcoming Extra Life charity game event along with some conversations with people I know in the local rpg community, I realized that Hero System is no longer my "go-to" game of choice for superhero and fantasy as it was back when I was in high school and college. Since I now run sessions at local game events where players arrive and use a pregenerated character, player interest has leaned more towards rules light systems like ICONS that are easy to understand and pick up upon arrival. I haven't ran Fantasy AGE yet, but after some brief conversations with a few who are either new to RPGs or have played D&D, the impress…

Puffin Forest has posted and extensive review of the Second Edition of Paizo’s Pathfinder rules. In terms of crunch. It is a step away from the simplicity of D&D 5e, and that may have been a problem for him and his two game groups. I. Was mentally comparing his analysis to how gaming used to be, to how it is now. See what you think of this

Anyone here into Traveller, any era? Any system? I think the classic traveller setting is wonderfully made and intricate but tends to drive players to 'the frontier' for adventure. So much of the core doesn't get used as much even if there's a lot of room for adventures (often of a criminal nature) in the "civilized" regions. I liked the 2300 setting even if it wasn't technically traveller. But it was originally called traveller 2300. I think it has some of the best aliens ever designed for a sfrpg. Traveller interstellar wars is a good setting but apparently dead as sjg lost the traveller license. Traveller TNE has a lot of potential and is largely under…

Saw this posted on Facebook and thought I'd pass it along--it would be really nifty if there could be something like this for Champions.

Being more a fan of the superhero genre, I've often wondered at the general (roleplaying) public's seeming preference for the sword & sorcery genre. I base my theory on the huge amount of fantasy rpgs out there, although superheroes have quite a few. I also look at the number of superhero MMOs as opposed to fantasy-based games. I have a working theory, which I'd like to open up for discussion. Superheroes are about Protecting the Status Quo, Upholding The Law, Opposing Evil, Black & White (all of this is of course my opinion, and is way simplified as well). All of this is done in a world close to our own. Fantasy is about Adventuring, and a…

So which genre do you think is most in need of a fresh new setting? I’ve got that creative itch and thought I’d give working on a setting a crack. Now I just need a genre and can’t seem to settle on one so how about a little help?

5e D&D (this is non-negotiable) game. GM is a ~*Writer*~ with all the baggage that word implies. GM also likes swerves & Misery Porn. Hubby begs me to join "because they're OUR FRIENDS~!" The premise given is it's a high level game, where our toons are tasked with saving the world from Evil ASAP, with OOC reasoning we're cleaning up the mess from a previous campaign (that neither me nor hubby were involved in). Things are ok, for the most part, but there's hinky stuff in the background with someone hacking into our warforged barbarian remotely to give her a breath weapon to attack us with against her will, the elven ranger's higher-ups are being su…

My son is starting a D&D 5e group and we've been discussing GMing in general, as well as playing, and just roleplaying in general. We started sharing various YouTube videos with each other and using those as springboards for more discussion. He sent me the following video, and as I watched it, it really hit home how the Hero System really does some things really right. There's mention of how HPs don't seem to really represent damage well. How there's no easy way to determine lethality. And the importance of discussing the campaign setting with the players. These of course are all things that I, and I assume many of you take for granted as non-problems when it comes to…

I noticed that in recent years Chaosium relaunched its classic role-playing games in conjunction with updated versions of others. Of note was Super World, which I heard a lot of good things about in reflecting the style and feel of the superhero genre. I also came across similar reviews for its fantasy themed RPGs. More recently, Chaosium has released Basic Role Playing, which is arguably the counterpart to the core system rule book published by Hero Games. How is Chaosium Basic Role Playing compared to Hero System? I haven't read Chaosium Basic Role Playing or games under that system like Super World yet, but previously ran Pendragon (1st Ed.) many years ago,…

I keep seeing on rpol, people advertising for Pathfinder games. Does anyone here know Pathfinder? Is it hard to learn (compared to Hero Games)? Is it as flexible as Hero games? What do you think of Pathfinder.

I am in a debate with a friend. I like playing games like Star Wars, Star Trek, and other franchised universes. I like playing and running those universes because they are pre-built and recognizable, but I also like to play around and twist stories to my own liking. I see no problem, but my friend has the feeling that changing too much and it will no longer be that universe. To some degree, I think he is right, but to what degree? How much can you change Star Wars, Star Trek, Marvel, or whatever before it stops being what it and becomes it is. I personally think that is a personal opinion and in roleplaying games it should come down to group consensus regardless of …

Have you ever played or owned an RPG that received excellent reviews or was really liked by your friends, but you hated? While there were excellent RPGs I've owned that weren't my cup of tea in the past like Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay, RuneQuest, or Dragon Age, I never hated them. A few, though, stand out, but not in a good way: FATE Core System - I read a lot of good reviews and I bought some of the digital products to get started as an alternative to Champions and ICONS, but the narrative style of gaming was just too broad and vague for me. It reminded more of me playing soldier or knight in my backyard with my friends in whether or not we hit each other or …

Is pathfinder D&D or is it not D&D? When I look elsewhere for the answer, it seems to depend entirely on whether or not you play D&D, as in: D&D players 4e and up (and a portion of 3.5 players) tell me "yes; it's D&D with softened edges and a more White Wolf feel (not sure what that means: angsty? I don't know). Pathfinder players: a minority tell me it's D&D, while the vast majority tell me that it is absolutely not D&D. No one in either camp can defend their position in a convincing way. I tend to filter everything through HERO, a habit I picked up back when it was just Champio…

I've been buying more board games lately. Unfortunately, the difference in price between online stores and my local board game store are pretty wide: a $10 difference or even $25 on the bigger, higher-priced games. The local store appears to just have everything set at standard retail price. Meanwhile, I can easily find a lower price online with free shipping. I'm not even referring to Amazon. I mean like CoolStuffInc and other places online. So... why should I buy locally? I have an urge to support a local business, but I honestly can't bring myself to pay this much extra money, repeatedly, when I can consistently save a non-negligible amount. I d…

Recently, I developed a yen for old school revival gaming systems and have downloaded several PDF's for perusal purposes, but if I were to play them seriously, I would feel ethically inclined to make sure I owned a legal copy. A lot of what I have downloaded, I know is legal. Some I know, I should buy a legitimate copy, but there are some that are in a gray zone. They are scans of old books that are out of print, and in some cases, the original publishers are out business. The question is, how can I check whether a download is free and clear or would require some action on my part to make right?

OpenLegends is a OpenSource RPG System. I stumbeled over this only last year. But reading it I think there is some interesting ideas in this RPG System. Both for itself, and for similar mechanics in Hero. Indeed OpenLegends might even be a good learning/demo RPG Systems for Hero. A less granular way to learn a point-buy System. You can find the full rules here: https://openlegendrpg.com/core-rules/00-introduction But I will try to give a bit of an overview and talk about the particulary interesting parts. It it'score it is a cross-setting, point buy RPG system that has systems for social and physical combat. Powers, Talents and Co: D…

Hello everyone, Our Friendly Local Game Store has ended in-store gaming until further notice. I feel gratitude it is still in business in the recession that has just started. Are you still doing role playing games? Will you all meet in person, or will you practice social distancing and meet online instead? Live long and prosper!

When I look at the Hero System mechanics, there are only a few that in and of themselves really help capture the feel of the superhero genre. Knockback and the non-lethality of Normal damage come immediately to mind. By putting those aside, you turn Champions into the basis for other genres. But the game mechanics can start to have a samey/generic feel to them, as you go from genre to genre, precisely because you're using a common core system for them all. So how can RPG game mechanics capture the feel of, say, the science fiction genre? The most obvious way to deliver the feel of a genre is through the setting, and then through the flavor text attached to act…

Name and describe a TV character you would like to base a RPG character on. I'd go with Bobby Goren from "L&O criminal intent". I really liked him because he was a very good but flawed and troubled character. He had issues with schizophrenia and other inner demons which came along with his great intelligence. He was a mix of sherlock Holmes and columbo, with some real, serious issues like being generally asocial, schizophrenic and having rage issues. He also had hulking size which maybe kept him from being bullied too much as a kid. He was also apparently a "monster magnet" who attracted a lot of downright evil characters to him. Plus those cl…

"Old School" Superhero RPG Experiences...Guardians....Villains & Vigilantes/Mighty Protectors? 1 2

Based on what I've seen and read on various forums, "old school" gaming seems to be enjoying a bit of a resurgence in recent years across the different genres. Personally, I recently bought digital versions of Guardians and Mighty Protectors, which is Villains & Vigilantes 3rd Edition following decades of legal battle between creators Jeff Dee and Jack Herman and the owners of Fantasy Games Unlimited 😉. I never played Guardians but remember seeing it on display at my local comic and game store in the early 1990s and Villains & Vigilantes was my first experience in superhero RPGs in the early to mid 1980s before getting into Champions (Third Edition). …
