"Old School" Superhero RPG Experiences...Guardians....Villains & Vigilantes/Mighty Protectors? 1 2

Based on what I've seen and read on various forums, "old school" gaming seems to be enjoying a bit of a resurgence in recent years across the different genres. Personally, I recently bought digital versions of Guardians and Mighty Protectors, which is Villains & Vigilantes 3rd Edition following decades of legal battle between creators Jeff Dee and Jack Herman and the owners of Fantasy Games Unlimited 😉. I never played Guardians but remember seeing it on display at my local comic and game store in the early 1990s and Villains & Vigilantes was my first experience in superhero RPGs in the early to mid 1980s before getting into Champions (Third Edition). …

Here's a fun exercise for our gamification pleasure. One person will state some race, class, archetype, or essentially anything else that they desire for the next person to describe. However, it cannot be used in the traditional manner, there needs to be something that is different from conventional manner. For example, a taboxoxi could be written up as some form of demon-sprung warrior. First up: elves

Long story short: a player in my latest campaign (high Medieval-themed fantasy) would like to play a pre-teen mage focused around direct-damage spells. In all the time I've ran tabletop games, I have never had anyone request to play a character who has yet to reach adulthood. Some might think that, with the staggering amount of unorthodox dramatis personae out there in the wider gaming community, reaching a decision on so mundane a concept would be trivial. Some might think that; I thought that. After all, I enjoy fiction where the protagonist - or at least one of the protagonists - is an unusually talented/skilled youth that either shakes up the establishment or takes up…

With NaGa DeMon upon us (National Game Design Month) I'm going to write a setting using the Metahumans Rising system. Had a few different ideas for settings so I threw up a poll on Twitter, if anyone is interested, give us look and a vote. Ultimate Fighters Vs Street Warriors Heroes are martial artists from around the world. Each fighting for their own reasons. They are the best, but something more sinister looks in the shadows. A High Octane Gonzo Adventure setting. PSI: Paranormal Special Investigators Far Sight, telepathy, telekinesis, each hero has a gift that sets them apart from the everyday people around them. The institute pulled y…

We’ve done articles on martial artists and we’ve done articles on mutant animals, clearly there is only one place to go next. Over the coming weeks we will be hosting a series of public polls to decide the various campaign elements. After we have collectively decided on everything going into our stew pot, we’ll put everything together for our shared setting along with some interesting NPCs and locations along the way. The first poll is now live. Time Period and Broad Setting https://housedok.com/ummac-poll-1/ If you want to contribute to the polls before they go live: Patrons get to see polls early, and contribute to the options. https…

The Article At 13th Dimension Saw this on Facebook and thought I'd pass it along. Champions does get a mention here, albeit not a particularly favorable one. But there are some seriously old-school games noted here.

Does anyone know where I can find "usable" deck plans for 20s-40s merchant ships? I can find literally dozens on Pinterest and similar sites. But they are all low resolution and I cannot actually read the compartment labels. Any guidance would be appreciated.

Hope it's okay to post it here, this is not mine but I know folks are on the lookout for books and $20 is decent price. https://www.facebook.com/groups/RPGsalestrades/?__cft__[0]=AZUgi2XG_oaOuCcUpSTcgUbJ99on-F3LOBgMQxk5-H25BXXQglCeHnbXkCWxbQBho4A7qc7ae99ijrW6F3x6Q5NwV1N7fPtF9SRVqoz_htQTs-PzL5Cjlu289Io1YSf5Fqd9cy0GuPE3nHM9Q6JlYoEreC67Q6V5iA3h3yrFnuEYTm7q2O-I2DOnKG6942wEOoWmyGctrHZ0QFlqLu00Ug3GdvOh-UD5FAcqvBWaBZS5kg&__tn__=-UC%2CP-R I am not certain if you have to be a member to see the posts, the group is Role Playing Games & Miniatures (Sales & Trades ). Again, not my book, not my group, just posting in case someone is looking. As alway…

7th Sea 2e

Some friends are discussing doing a 7th Sea game (2nd Edition). Has anyone looked at it? I've flipped through my friend's copy and it seems a bit different from 1st (which we used to play way back when). I've noticed they've changed the continent and opened up the "New World" for players. Any feedback would be appreciated.

I wonder if I fired the proverbial "golden BB" (shooters of LBX-10s in Battletech will understand the term) at a longtime friendship. The shorter version: there's someone I've known since second or third grade. Recently I invited him to join our D&D group. The short version: it did not go well. The longer version (and apologies in advance, there's a good bit to the story): I invited this friend of mine to join our bi-weekly D&D group. Let's call him "new guy" or NG for short. NG's other gaming group had started puttering out by that point. Also, I knew that NG had some real-life issues that were hitting him kinda hard. I thought that enjoying some…

How can I create a dc heroes hack of any comic book series featuring the golden age public domain super heroes?

5e D&D (this is non-negotiable) game. GM is a ~*Writer*~ with all the baggage that word implies. GM also likes swerves & Misery Porn. Hubby begs me to join "because they're OUR FRIENDS~!" The premise given is it's a high level game, where our toons are tasked with saving the world from Evil ASAP, with OOC reasoning we're cleaning up the mess from a previous campaign (that neither me nor hubby were involved in). Things are ok, for the most part, but there's hinky stuff in the background with someone hacking into our warforged barbarian remotely to give her a breath weapon to attack us with against her will, the elven ranger's higher-ups are being su…

So which genre do you think is most in need of a fresh new setting? I’ve got that creative itch and thought I’d give working on a setting a crack. Now I just need a genre and can’t seem to settle on one so how about a little help?

Artbreeder.com is a site using A.I. and sliders to generate art, by "breeding" two pieces of art to make a hybrid, that can be subsequently bred to other pieces. Then you can save the art. High Rez files are available if you pay a few dollars/ Euros a month. It's not very useful for Superheroic content, but Heroic games Modern, Sci-Fi and Fantasy. IT also does Landscapes, and facial portraits. A lot of concept artist use these as a base, for paint overs. and because the art generated for your save has never existed before, so it's yours to use as you see fit. Copyright free (unless you copyright it yourself). This could help the artistically impaired for generating Campa…

This thread is for storing and sharing any ideas related to rpgs. The level of detail or completion doesn't matter. It's meant to be a place to put in ideas so you don't forget it, or want to revisit it in the future, or just because your players wouldn't be interested in the ideas. I got this idea when rereading my Rolemaster books. There are so many different types of spellcasters, most of which specialize in one form of magic. So I thought about a possible campaign where all magic must focus on a single aspect. There won't be generic wizards casting fireballs. There will be healers, oracles, alchemists, and other specialists. Magic will be more utilitarian …

So, the other day I saw Darren Watts post about his podcast Explain This Comics Guys. Up till this point every podcast I ever tried have been horrifically bad. If they managed to touch on anything actually interesting, usually by accident, it is usually quickly buried under pathetic attempts at humor. But ETCG was a pleasant surprise. It covered an actual topic with the information delivered in a concise and intelligent manner. Any commentary actuality applied and reinforced the presentation. So here I am. This is posted in the General Roleplaying forum because that is what I'm looking for. A good informative podcast…

At times I find it amusing to create titles for sessions or adventures (a set of several sessions with a single resolution). Sometimes I pass these on to my players; often they're spoilers so I'm the only one who sees them. It happens also that I will change my planned course when I decide the title that wasn't right was cooler than my plan. Examples: Nowhere Beach Going for the Mister Gold {Mr Gold was the alias of the villain} The God of Music's Back-Up Band A Conversation with a Dragon Backwoods Gangbangers If you've done the same kind of thing, consider posting your titles for others' possible use!

I kept getting ads in my social media feed for a role-playing game called Amazing Tales, advertised as a game for kids four years or older and their parents. So yesterday I went over to Drive Through RPG and bought the PDF version for $6. It looks like a lot of fun. The basic idea is this: Choose a setting--a magical kingdom, a starship, a pirate ship on the high seas, whatever. Have your kid(s) make a character by choosing a name and describing what the character looks like. Then have the kid determine four things the character can do well--sailing a ship, finding hidden things, swordfighting, whatever. There is no skills list in the game; the skills are what…

Just curious if anyone else here is using Talespire as a VTT? Just curious. It's a rule agnostic 3D VTT that I have been loving since 2020. I can't remember if I have already posted this question here. If I Have I will understand if the Mod delete this.

I've been doing a fair bit of gaming in Middle-earth lately. I ran a MERP game via Tabletop Simulator (there is a bunch of MERP stuff in the Steam Workshop) a few week ago, and I'm trying to get a regular campaign going. Using Tabletop Simulator is one option; a live rpg session is another. I had come up with a bunch of house rules last year. Some are taken from the rule book; others are modified. MERP HOUSE RULES UNARMED COMBAT (BRAWLING AND WRESTLING) These rules are mainly taken from the rule book with few modifications. 1. Fist/kick (brawling) attacks use the Tooth & Claw Table (AT-5) to attack and the Unbalancing Critical…

So, while perusing the various racks at my local comic and game store, online stores like Drive Thru RPG, and stumbling upon game reviews by lucky chance, I've come across various new and also obscure superhero RPGs. I was wondering if others had experiences reading the rules or playing them and seeing how they match up against Champions. Some examples: Brave New World - Superhero gaming is a dystopian U.S. Aberrant - Published by White Wolf Guardians - This version is based on the D20 system from D&D 1st Edition on the premise of, "What if Gary Gygax focused his energy in the superhero genre instead of the fantasy genre?" …

So it has been a week since all the rumors and tweets started about FFG laying off (not only their video game line which was confirmed) but also all (or a large amount) of their staff in their RPG wing. A few (now) ex-employees confirmed that their had been cuts to the RPG but no one (that I could find searching) said how many or what it meant for their games going forward. Does anyone on here know more about what might be happening with them? I played a Star Wars campaign a few years back and actually grew to quite like the system and their books. Very nice quality and kind of surprising/sad that a company that big/popular with such a major IP ca…

I’d poster elsewhere on the site about playing Elder Scrolls Online but I didn’t care for it. Downloaded Neverwinter and a couple hours in I’m really enjoying myself. Does anyone else here play? Any advice for a newbie?
