    Champions Now Information

    The first wave of role-playing design was its own Renaissance, marked by greatness of all kinds. If you were playing then, you'll remember. And if you weren't, you'd be amazed at what that wave held. One of them was Champions, the Super Role-Playing Game. Hero Games is proud to present Champions Now, to be created by pioneering game designer Ron Edwards, author of Sorcerer and co-founder of The Forge. Ron will revisit the original three editions of first-generation Champions (1981 to 1988), recovering the power of this foundational era of superhero roleplaying. With this announced, I thought it might be prudent to explain what Champions Now will – and won’t – be. Is This The Hero System 7th Edition? No. This is exactly what it says it is: a version of Champions inspired by its earliest roots in 80’s gaming, yet updated for the 21st Century. Technically speaking, it’s not even a “Hero System” product, because Champions predates the Hero System as an independent game engine, which was born out of it. Does It Replace The Hero System 6th Edition? No. Nor the fifth or fourth editions, either. Each of these versions of the Hero System has its own feel, style of play, storied history, and large number of support products. We still sell them, support them, and will continue to do so. (I’m personally still publishing Hero System 6E material.) If you like them, please continue to play them. We wouldn't ask you to do otherwise. Is This First Edition Champions? No. Well, not exactly. A lot has happened in roleplaying game design and theory in the last forty years, and Champions Now will take this into account. Unusually for a version of Champions, Ron is placing a large focus on character play and development through play, but far less on mechanical character creation. This is his vision of Champions, informed by the important work done by himself and other small press game designers over the last decade. It isn’t simply a reprint or our version of an “OSR” game. Why Ron Edwards? Besides being a Champions fan from way back, Ron is considered by many to be the father of the “indie” game movement of designers who self-publish their work, which often focus on collaborative storytelling and narration. He is also the author of numerous interesting essays on comic books and roleplaying games, some of which are going to find their way into the pages of Champions Now. We thought it would be interesting to see what Ron would do with the early versions of Champions that he loves, and he thought it would be interesting to spend time after the successful conclusion of the Kickstarter project including you - the backers - in what that will eventually mean. They are: Blaster Brick Everyhero (meaning universal) Gadgeteer Martial Artist Mentalist Metamorph Mystic Speedster Weaponmaster Additionally, cards are numbered to allow the game master or player to select matching numbered files from the CCCC Hero Designer Character Pack (or CCCCHDCP) and plug them into Hero Designer to create their hero! This character can then be customized, balanced, or otherwise altered to more specifically meet the player's needs. It's worth mentioning that this deck is designed to produce a point averaged 400 point standard superheroic 6th Edition Champions character. This means that the actual point value of the Ability assigned to a card may be, in actuality, slightly higher or lower than the card indicates. Don't be overly concerned. Roll with it! This problem can be solved later using Hero Designer. Or not at all, as it won't affect game play in any measurable way for a novice player. And speaking of novice players: this product is really for them, as well as for more experienced players and game masters looking for a tool to help convince reluctant gamers to try Champions. To help those who are new to the Hero System (Champions) jargon, one side of the card contains a simple explanation of what the card does, the other statistical rules information (or “writeups.”) In cases where the writeups are too large to fit on the card, additional information is provided by card number in the electronic portion of the product. AND speaking of the electronic portion of this product, it contains not only additional, expanded card descriptions and HD files, but also a print-suitable version of the card deck so the purchaser can print additional decks or cards at home when needed.

  10. The 1940s, as World War Two ravaged the world, were full of strife and horror. It was a time for heroes, when men and women stood to battle for what they believed in. It would be a long while before the United States was drawn into the war. A few of her citizens, who wanted to fight for one reason or another, went off to form fighting groups, risking their United States citizenship. Some went on, later in the war, to become such groups as the Fighting Tigers and the Eagle Squadrons of Britain’s Royal Air Force. By August of 1939, the Axis started gaining chunks of the world in its conquests. Unknown Eagles is about a special group of women and men who might have formed groups of what, to some, might look like mercenaries, but who were in truth units of special agents made up to fight against the enemies of the free world.

  12. Welcome to the Hero Plus System Sourcebook, Bright Future Edition. Many of you know of the comic book and comic strip Bright Future, and many readers have expressed interest, in a role playing sense, towards the Bright Future world. Thanks to Hero Games, we have put together notes and outlines for the Bright Future world.     Champions Now Playtest Update

    Ron Edwards has been working away on Champions Now, extensively playtesting his vision of Champions with numerous fans. Some sessions and partial sessions of his initial recent play of the first-generation rules with very little alteration can be seen HERE, HERE, and HERE. Be warned that the the recordings are incomplete and very rough, as he was working through different options for the right tech at the time. All the sessions of his extensive game using the Alpha rules (which kept altering as they went along) are HERE, while Robert and Abby Baldwin’s Alpha game with Ron is discussed HERE, and the direct link to their blog describing the game in detail are HERE.     Forgotten Enemies #2 (PDF+CP)

    Many villains are always in the news; many are always on our minds. Some, however, have not been seen for years and to some this means that they are retired, in jail, or dead. Only if this was in fact the truth! But it isn’t.     Blast From The Past! Haunted Heroes (4th Edition) PDF

    I didn't know it existed either until a few weeks ago, when I received Michael Satran's Hero System collection thanks to the efforts of some mutual friends, which contained a floppy disk of it. It seems to have been a very early electronic-only Iron Crown era Hero System product (#HH4). It's 78 pages, and was written by Edwin Millheim, Grant Scheiber and Krista Fells. It was developed for Hero Games in 1998-99 by Meridian Designs Freelance Group. It has both Hero System and Fuzion System write-ups, and is intended for use with Champions campaigns in which the GM wants to interject Horror elements.
  22. Haunted Heroes is set up with a multitude of short adventures, adventure seeds, characters and backgrounds, creatures, artifacts, items, and the horrific. All of these have one thing in common: the supernatural and the horrific. From spirits and mad scientists to creatures that hide in the dark recesses of the heroes. nightmares, all of these reside within these pages. Within, a game master will find dozens of things from the darkness to use as they are presented or incorporate into their own campaign. However, Fantasy Hero is not a stand-alone product; to use it the player must also have the HERO System Rulesbook (4th Edition), which contains all the rules for the HERO System.
