HeroGM
If you can find the old DRAGON magazines you might like to look these up. Mainly put up as a suggested reading list for the fantasy people here.
archer
That list flips the author John Norman with his character Tarl Cabot.
HeroGM
I thought that looked a little funny. I blame dragon and D&D for giving me my reading habits.

John Norman thought he WAS Tarl Cabot so it works either way. (BDSM nut-job of the first order) Lawnmower Boy
Lord Liaden
Tarnsman of Gor wasn't bad for a ripoff of Burroughs. But yeah, Norman went off the rails rather quickly after that.

But yeah, Norman went off the rails rather quickly after that. I think I got through the first book and about half of the second. And only managed that much because I'd spent part of my very limited funds on the books (which made me feel obligated to make the attempt) and I hadn't had access to anything to read for a couple of months over summer vacation (which made me somewhat desperate for anything at all to read). I honestly wasn't expecting Gor to be on the list. I looked up the author and character names so I could post a joking complaint that they weren't included on the list. Oops. Ternaugh
Archive.org link to viewable versions of old issues: https://archive.org/details/DragonMagazine260_201801 Alternatively, it might be possible to find the CD collection of the first 250 issues that was published in the Dragon Magazine Archive, though probably not at a reasonable price (one copy on Amazon is going for $770.14, Noble Knight Games has two copies, starting at $175). The files are in PDF format, and there was a search engine that would install for Win9x OS.
assault
Up to a point, the Gor books can be read as a "Spicy Stories" version of Burroughs. A lot of the Spicies had BDSM overtones. But most of them were short stories, and didn't keep rehashing the same misogynist garbage over and over and over again.

Yeah, I read a few of them wa-a-a-y back in the day, just to see what all the fuss was about. The most interesting thing tome was how the hero, Tarl Cabot, was initially horrified and repulsed by the sexual slavery aspect of Gor culture--but very quickly came to see it as right and proper. Probably easier to come to see it as right and proper if you aren't the one who's the slave.
HeroGM
And that reminds me I still need to see the movie. Yes, movie and Jack Palance is in it so go figure. When I first saw the articles or made me want to go and read the books so I understood the characters. Zelazney, Howard, and Lovecraft was the first. C.J Cherryh came next. When they did the article on Kurtz' Deryni (a race of psionic mage's) I went to waldenbooks and picked up the first series and loved it. Because of X2 (Castle of Amber) I picked up what I could find then of Clark Ashton Smith's works. [Note: they have gone back and collected all of his works. The Houston library has copies, may want to check your local one]

Tjack
If you’re planning to watch the Gor movie, just skip the middleman and watch Porn. Same storyline with better acting. But seriously folks.... I saw the list but what exactly is or are “Giants in the Earth”? I don’t think I’ve ever heard the term before. I know of the phrase “He bestrode the Earth like a giant” but I don’t know if that’s the same thing.

Characters from different fantasy stories were written up in D&D terms. See here for more info.

I don't have the King James Version to hand, but it tells how the sons of God married daughters of men and their offspring were the Nephelim: paraphrasing, "And there were giants in the Earth in those days, the mighty men of renown." So, a phrase for legendary heroes. Dean Shomshak Amorkca
Lord Liaden
King James Bible version, Genesis 6:4 -- " There were giants in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them, the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown." I was going along, perfectly content in my daily life, assuming that no one had ever tried to make a Gor movie, much less that they are easily available to find. Someone PLEASE tell me there's a Gray Mouser movie and fifteen sequels out there that I've never heard about....
Ninja-Bear
I couldn’t find the sequel to Gor though. 😢 I personally enjoy lyes the movie. However I’ve been told on more than one occasion that my tastes in movies are...odd. 😁
