Capitals' Alex Ovechkin ties Gordie Howe's record for most goals scored with one NHL team

It is a truth universally acknowledged that Wayne Gretzky is the greatest ice hockey player of all time. Gordie Howe is probably at (or at least near) the top of a very short list of candidates for #2.

and did it playing with 10 men in last 10+ minutes of extra time when their goalie got hurt and they had to bring in his backup. the end of that game was just amazing. Philly scored in the 10+ minutes of extra time then the LAFC tied it back. Turns out their backup goalie used to be the backup in Philly and is a PK specialist. He saved 2 PKs and the other was put over the net.

The World Cup of Hockey was scheduled for February 2024.  Today, that date has been scrubbed;  they're shooting for '25.  Several major issues...TV rights, player participation (it'd be middle of the NHL season), and not surprisingly, the role any Russian players might have.  But to me...asking the NHL and its players to totally disrupt their schedule more than for the Olympics, feels like a hard sell.  Same for the NHL's media partners.

Rafa Nadal lost in the ATP Finals to Auger-Aliassime and Fritz, both in straight sets, and with some other results, has been eliminated.  He's also lost 4 straight ATP matches in a row...US Open Round of 16 to Tiafoe, Paris Masters 1000 Round of 32 to Tommy Paul (he had a bye for the first round.)

Been saying this for a while, but one really has to wonder if his career is all but over now.  His body is simply not letting him play regularly, or train the same, and the results show it.

Ronaldo is proving that petty athletes exist in many sports.  Man U's trying to get his contract voided;  I presume they'd owe him some guaranteed money that he doesn't deserve after his recent stunts.

There are also, IIRC, serious grumblings about his play with the national team...selfish, demanding the ball, that sort of thing.  Making the team remarkably easy to defend.

You're not going to find me defending FIFA or anyone involved in its administration.  It is corrupt in ways most USers find difficult to comprehend, perhaps because USers are accustomed to organizational officials being less obvious in their corrupt operations.  FIFA is corrupt in a cultural way, the standard way of kleptocratic government officials in Africa, Asia, South America, and Louisiana: they don't know how to conduct their business in any other way.  Read about Michel Platini as he is/was as a FIFA honcho rather than a soccer player.

Last year's NWSL sexual abuse scandal involving women's soccer in the US displays a different sort of corruption and culture of illegal behavior in its administrative tiers, but it's still a culture of corruption and exploitation.

  • 2 weeks later...

I saw an interesting article today suggesting how to fix the game of soccer / football in six simple steps.

1. The field is too freaking big. Make it much, much smaller.

2. There are too many players. With the smaller field, cut the teams down to three attackers, two defenseman, and one goalkeeper per side.

3. Reduce the size of the goal to make scoring chances more exciting.

4. Allow unlimited substitution during the game. Furthermore, allow players to substitute without stopping play.

5. Cover the entire field in ice.

6. Give all the players sticks.

I didn't recognize the name of the author, but I sure like the way they think.
