Some character concepts

This is for a medieval-ish game. They are kind of related, but thankfully no game is ever going to completely ride the rails. The categories can overlap to various degrees.

The Barbarian: not necessarily the Full Conan, but a pirate, mercenary and general scoundrel for pay. May have followers. If you have the cash, he or she has the warband, and isn't bothered by silly prophecies.

The Claimant to the Throne: This person is the disputed heir to a probably minor kingdom or title. Their (male?) rival is good at swords, horses and generally being a popular aristocrat of the less cerebral kind. The Claimant might be being paid to stay away, or may be being fobbed off on the Church (equivalent). They could even be a spell caster. If they could get enough support/wealth, they could potentially seize the throne/title, when it becomes vacant.

The Student: Universities exist. However, they are essentially just high schools for wannabe priests and a few other rich kids who aren't planning on taking vows. You can learn Wizardry here, if you are keen. Was your character involved in the Anatomy Scandal? (Anatomy is considered to be a Dark Art, essentially indistinguishable from Necromancy. You know, secretive practices involving corpses and parts of corpses etc...)

The Witch: Magic at its more practical, less scholastic, level. Its social acceptability depends on the social status of the practitioner, plus what they actually do. May engage in prophecy.

The Sorceror/Sorceress: Someone who practices magic in socially unacceptable ways.

The Priest: You probably didn't attend University. It's quite likely that you move your lips when you read. You may be a serf, whose duties involve tending to the local church rather than (or as well as) working in the fields. Or you may have been sent out from a Monastery to care for the souls of the lay people. (You may actually have some serious literacy skills in this case.) Your level of faith and knowledge may vary wildly.

Some of my further options are a bit off, so I will omit them.

Feel free to make your own suggestions. I've generally assumed that everyone is human. I haven't paid much attention to the smelly bourgeois riffraff yet, although city states should actually be important.

The Returned Soldier: Your liege sent you to war and you managed to survive. Maybe you won some accolades, maybe the lords took all the credit. You've learned the tradecraft of the soldier and those experiences will always be with you. If you're lucky, you even managed to return with only a few scars, a little coin, and some gear. Where does life go from here?

Second Son to a Noble.  Your brother will inherit, what will you do?  Mercenary?  Priest?  Mage (if smart enough)?

Daughter to a Noble.  (this is dependent on the status of woman)  Marriage?  Convent?

Tradesman.  Merchant.  New markets.  Travel. (Marco Polo)

Fantasy isn’t my usual cup of tea, but you’re missing a basic spot in your line up.

The Rogue.  Whether he’s a sticky fingered street rat or a high class gambler and con man, he moves through the back alleys of the city like a Ranger does the forest.  He knows everyone and everyone knows him. Every hustler, bartender, strong arm robber and low life likes and trusts him....just not too far.

The Hunter:  He usually hunts animals and has good wilderness sills, but can be just as deadly against humans.

The Knight Errant:  He is a poor knight but without the lands or family to support himself so he must seek his fortune where he can find it.

Heir to a magical legacy:  He is descendant from a magical creature and has inherited a portion of his ancestors power.  The ancestor may have been an angle, a demon a dragon a fey or anything other magical creature.  He does magic but not the typical spell casting of a wizard.  Instead of learning his magic it comes naturally.

The Avatar: Has been summoned by some super natural entity.  As long as the entity believes the Avatar is following their directives,  then the Avatar will maintain some portion of the entity's ability.  During periods of stress,  the Avatar can summon greater abilities at a price determined by the entity.

The Woodsman: Formerly lower nobility that was stripped of their title and has since retreated to the nearby forest. Has learned to live off the land and wield a sword.

The Fool: A former jester that's now hiring themselves out as an adventurer. He brings an unusual spin on bard-like abilities to the table.
The Smith: Child of a blacksmith that can make any blade known. And can swing them better than most warriors.

Sellsword: An impressive warrior with a mixed reputation. They can help... for the right price.

Pact Mage: Made a deal with a few otherworldly beings for amazing power. Unfortunately payment is coming due.

The Chi Master: Trained in the martial arts for years, they're out in the world for the first time and looking for new experiences.

Don't forget the noble Daughter who hides as a man or, depending on the situation, tried to prove she's better than one.

Aladdin....sure.  That’s why I used the phrase “street rat”.  But there was also some Maverick and Lando Calrissian in that description too.

The Torchbearer!

:D

Just some thoughts:  We started with some rough character ideas then quickly devolved into a list of Character Classes.

Where are the characters?!  Sure, there are a few spread throughout; I don't want to discount them.

And today I think I may have learned that Aladdin was a woman.....

The Pugilist: Life in a big city isn't always easy. When you are born at the bottom you have to learn to fight, or die. Maybe you joined a gang when you were young and fought in turf wars, tempered your skill in numerous bar fights, or maybe you got lucky and had a mentor to harden your fists. Either way, you grew up tough and managed to survive. You've managed to save a little coin, maybe it's time to look for better employment, and at more than your fists as the solution to every problem...

The gardener: not the sharpest tool in the box, the gardener has plenty of sharp tools in his box. And he's not afraid to use them on anyone who hurts his friends, showing that he's had plenty of practice to build both his muscles and his skill with his tools. Sure, once he's shown his loyalty and bravery someone will probably take him on and train him up, but he'll never forget that deep down he's just a humble gardener who people keep on mistaking for a "real" hero. (He's probably a decent herbalist on the side as well, although he'll claim that he's not a "real doctor")
