Agreed, he's been a little too cocky for his own good but he sure as hell didn't deserve the treatment he got.

On the other hand, the Browns absolutely deserve to lose half their fan base and get stuck playing a season with Jacoby Brissett under center.

edit: Guess which team Baker gets to play against in week 1.

He's been way too cocky.

As far as the treatment, well, he can't be blamed for the Browns being total idiots, but he also has sharp limitations.  Not like he never had a chance.

And hey, $33M is $33M.  Plus a ton from endorsements;  some of that is him, and his brashness, being marketable.  But simply being a starting NFL QB is huge too.  Reports are he's pulling down another $10M in endorsements.

Note that the Browns are paying him $10M, and possibly more with incentive clauses.  Carolina's only paying him $5M.  So figure:  the Browns have to eat over half the contract, AND all they got back was (at best) a 4th round pick...in 2024.  That's the best the Browns could do...partly their own fault, to be sure, but it also says that no one else was chomping at the bit to take him, even on those EXTREMELY favorable terms.

If Mayfield got the shaft from the Browns, would you say that Darnold is getting the shaft from the Panthers?  OK, numbers say Mayfield's an upgrade...but not a major one, IMO.

A weird thing about this trade...both Darnold and Mayfield are in their walk years...UFAs in 2023.

Between Baker Mayfield and Deshaun Watson, the Browns are looking at paying ~$20.5M to quarterbacks who won't be playing for them in 2022.

But then the Cowboys are paying $20M this year, and $44M next year, for one who can't play....

EDIT:  and Carolina is paying over $23M for the stunning combination of Darnold and Mayfield, comedy act extraordinaire...

Cousins is getting $40M.  Wentz is over $28M.

Throwing away $20M+ at QB is pretty typical these days....

Yeah, but barring a QB on their rookie contract, they're getting off cheap.

Bungles: 8.6

Donkeys: 9.0

Jags: 7.6

Squawks: 7.2

Rams: 9.5

9 wins for the Chiefs?  Someone's expecting a pretty major dropoff.

And if no Watson, I don't see the Browns managing 5 offhand.

But hey, no one will remember bloviations this early.  Altho....................did y'all realize that the first camps open TOMORROW??  Rookies report to Bills and Raiders.  Several more teams, it's Tuesday.

Football isn't supposed to start while the Tour's still going, is it?

The tickets for the Squawks-Bucs game in Munich sold out approximately instantaneously.

“But the numbers we saw just now were absolutely crazy: 700,000 fans (!!) queuing digitally in our shop at 9:59 am. All tickets taken within minutes. Never witnessed a similar demand for any other sports event in Germany...”

So, a 9-8 season in Denver? Well, that should certainly silence the critics.

I mean, who doesn’t want to see the Seahawks get curb stomped by one of the actually good teams? ;)

In all seriousness, this looks like it would be a boring game.

Bah, all those numbers fall toward the mean...they wouldn't dare guess that some team will go 13-4 or another will go 4-13 - which will most definitely happen.  The real issue is whether Russell Wilson has some great seasons left in him...or not.  Pretty tough division too...at least on paper.

But you know this already.  :)

The Football Outsiders Almanac is a 500+ page tome derived from statistical analysis whose conclusions are incorporated into many mainstream football projections, so I'm not sure I'd describe it as "clickbait".
