With respect, characterizing this story as emblematic of "a lot of knife attacks in Toronto" is rather misleading. Violent crime in Toronto is low compared to most major North American cities. Total homicides in 2021 (latest figures I could find) were 85, one of the highest counts for the city over the past 30 years. But that's out of a population of 2.7 million.

 

This incident involves a swarm of young girls, but one confirmed murder victim. The group of girls may be connected to other acts of aggression in the city, but that remains to be confirmed. Nonetheless it is appalling, although not surprising to me. Aberrant behavior can crop up anywhere anytime, and Canada certainly isn't immune.
