WWYCD: Social Media Disappears

Mark Rand

Arctic Fox laments that all her mean girl posts have suddenly vanished. She wants the tech geniuses to fix this!

Pogo being a member of Gen Z curls into a ball and whimpers ;) After she recovered, she'd proceed to make up with it by talking everyone's ear off about all her opinions.

Eel feels oddly pleased and wonders why?

Aspirant worries that it's a plot to silence Canadian voices!

Lady Heart: Upset only that hir options to view anime has shrinked.

John "Sunburn" Roberts: Ponders if this would affect his job as color comitator for SNN ("the Super News Network, with former superhero John "Sunburn" Roberts on color comatory and former supervillain Doctor Benton D'Ark on the other side.")

Maximum:  "well this sucks!  How are people going to see this incredible jawline now?!"

Panther will find her "other" job much more difficult: when you're looking for confidential information, people will just _give it to you_ once they start blogging.

Jack Brass is going to have a much more difficult time with his social reform efforts.

Martin Power: "oh, thank _God_!"

Social Media seems to be everywhere.  What would your character do if it all just disappeared, sites and contents?

Most of my players would cheer at the loss. Character-wise, probably investigate.

The Felix 9?  The catman assassin from the 4th Edition Allies book?

The one and only. He was originally my P. C. Used mostly in Carl arigney’s epic play by post that spawned from an article in Alarums & Excursions.  There is a 6e version of him.

Now that I'm done making fun of Tennessee (it's no fun when everyone is doing it!), and seeing that Hermit's serial characters are making an appearance; and also seeing that we need more content around here, I'm going to play, too!

Demigoblin knows what's happening, and has a contingency plan. Meanwhile, he's going to brood myster-- Hey, cut it out, Charlotte! Okay, okay, he's upset that he can't watch all his pop culture reviews and critiques. Implicitly Pretentious is on a total DCAU kick right now!

Maid of Gold is super-pissed off that this happened right after she posted her first ever thirst trap on TikTok so no-one could see it. No-one.

Twelve is going to miss social media because of its potential for organising. Amazon has a union! 2023 is right around the corner! Let's get out into the community and register, enroll, and inform! Oh, and maybe also he was going to look at some prof--! Hey!! This thought will be continued at some future date when Twelve catches Maid of Gold and makes her give him his phone back.

Carnadine doesn't care about stupid social media. It's so slow and boring! What she cares about is all the article and thesis sharing sites somehow counting as social media. She can't even get on Academia.edu! And she has 2 TB of data from a statistical study of genetic anomalies on 23andMe buffered! And her hard drive is full somehow! Wait, there's an external drive they're taking apart at school got to go get it Bye! HiitsRoseI'mbackdownloadinganalysingWheemathfun!

Fairchilde doesn't care because he certainly doesn't have a completely-contrary-to-terms-of-service underage Tindr account that he would be using appropriately if he  had it which he doesn't.

Queensfist is still a child of the Seventies. For her, social media is a party line and, okay, okay. She's already punched Bruce in the shoulder for pulling that stuff. It didn't really hurt, did it? Still getting used to the wuxia stuff, honest, okay, I'm sorry, you're coming to lunch, right? So, anyway, her first main point is that she's scared out of her pants of Facebook because it's like this invisible world where she might run into her old classmates, and, first, school drama, second, they're all old now what with the time travel and everything and it makes her think about death. Her second  main point is that someone let Rose order her own coffee even though there are rules, and someone knows that she's going to be impossible until the caffeine wears off. Dora.

I wonder if Mechanon could be behind this?

Companies like Google or Facebook seem like they could be used as vectors by Mechanon to carry out a scheme. Maybe a form of psychological programming using subliminal messages?

I'd make an Elon Musk joke, but it turns out that Musk is over. It's all Biden now and I don't want to make Simon cross.

JRSKA would be livid - her OnlyFans is one of her more amusing pastimes. When she catches up with whoever is responsible, the results will only be pretty to other Slaanesh cultists.

R.O.V.E.R isn't really equipped to understand social media, but it would certain affect the operations of his counterpart S.P.O.T - social media is one of the data sources that AI uses to select ROVER's next target.

Vitus : "And you're wasting my precious time with this *why*?"

Hero Shrew: "Oh, I thought our PR rep had locked me out of the team's social media accounts again. Huh."

Ripper K(and for that matter Felix Bethke) Who's loosing the most money and how much can they pay us to fix it?

Zero: "Have you any idea what it's like to be a telepath in the same room as an addict going through withdrawal? Now multiply that by 10 million."

Kestrel will laugh her tush off... she was born in 1924 (though she sure doesn't look it). She's never been a fan of the current culture, with its "influencers" and "personalities", trolls and misinformation purveyors. It's not just pervasive, but she believes in many cases it's actually insidious to cultural stability. She believes people are entitled to an informed opinion, not just any opinion, no matter how ignorant. People shouldn't turn whiny celebrities into heroes, no matter what their stripe, and not all points of view are created equal. She's also not a fan of "instant celebrity". Even superheroes are not immune. She thinks some supers are publicity hounds, which to a WWII Brit like her is unseemly. Mere bravery in the face of evil is not sufficient reason to lionize someone. To Kestrel, character and the test of time still mean something. She will attempt to guide her students at Ravenswood (and even a few of her fellow adult heroes) how to live life without it.

Nimisha (Ms. Shadowgamer's PC) will be less affected as a Post-Mill/ Gen Z than most, because her parents were both supers and still public figures (Dad: Secretary of DOSPA; Mom: former supermodel and now a consulting geologist and the wife of a Cabinet secretary), and she's listened to her parents and their warnings of the pitfalls of social media. She doesn't post selfies or blather on about particularly banal topics, or even exciting ones - in or out of her secret ID. She won't be thrilled, especially if it takes out a big chunk of the Internet with it, but she'll adapt quicker than the majority of her peers. Her younger brother Hammer will be less adaptable - he's not as smart, nor as wise. (Which is why his 'rents monitor his posts far more than his older sister.)

Casey will be the most affected, as he uses social media as a communication tool, and no one on the Internet knows he's a car...he's unfortunately also the most suggestible, but his "owner" has set up guidelines to prevent or at least create a check against the worst of the misinformation and trolls.

Baavo Thunderstruck would host a cash-bar seven day long bacchanal and try to sell commemorative medallions of both the bacchanal and "The Day Social Media Died".

ATW would recreate everything from stolen backups. Probably would reveal all the source code from all the social media companies and trash a number of prominent corporations by revealing secret communications, since the opportunity has presented itself.
