I'm not sure how he does it.

Part of it is that my nonverbal daughter LOVES football. She will bounce, laugh, giggle, and even occasionally shriek when football comes onto the TV. She'll look up Super Bowl highlights on her Kindle when she tires of her usual PBS programs. She's even shown a preference for football over the various Disney movies lately. It's almost painfully adorable.

Oh, and she loves hockey, too.

WTH, Chad Kelly?

Former NFL QB and reigning CFL MVP, gets nine-game suspension after allegations by ex-coach

Quote

The CFL concluded Tuesday, after conducting a third-party investigation of allegations, that Kelly violated the league's gender-based violence policy. In addition to his suspension, the quarterback "will be required to undergo confidential assessments by an independent expert and attend mandatory counselling sessions conducted by a gender-based violence expert."

It's official.

Tom Brady will be Fox's new lead analyst.  His first regular season game (with Kevin Burkhardt) will be Cowboys-Browns, in the big afternoon window, as a national exclusive.  (Both Fox and CBS typically get double headers for week 1...the more games the merrier, if you will, but not this season.)

The Russell Wilson era continues in Denver, as the Broncos play at Seattle opening weekend and then host the Steelers in week 2.

Denver has consecutive road games three times: weeks 3 and 4 (at Bucks, at Jets); weeks 9 and 10 (at Ravens, at Chiefs - yikes!); and weeks 16 and 17 (at Chargers, at Bengals). They have consecutive home games only once: weeks 5 and 6 (Raiders, Chargers). And the bye week is in week 14.

Fantastic.

This is what happens when your PR people get too involved in uniform design...the Giants' 100th anniversary uniform.

I believe we have reached an all-time low....

EDIT:  I assert the PR department because the helmet's from '38, the jersey from '33, and the pants from '25.

In other news, the New York Giants are changing their nickname to the New York Canadiens.

Yeah, they're kind of a hot mess visually, but I love the audacity.

Have you forgotten these or has the image burned a hole in your brain?

The NFL schedule makers hate the Steelers.  Clearly.

Their last 8 games:  Ravens, at Browns (TNF), at Bengals, Browns, at Eagles, at Ravens, Chiefs (Wednesday...Christmas), Bengals.

They'd darn well better start fast...at Falcons, at Broncos, Chargers, at Colts...but that's starting with 3 of 4 on the road, not fun...Cowboys, at Raiders, Jets, Giants.

Today's wit from The Book of Face:

"Somebody should tell Harrison Butker that when women play on men's football teams, they play his position."

I find this fascinating.

Story in the Athletic today about first round QBs, and how often they pan out...or at least don't flame out immediately.  The marker for that is that they sign an extension to their rookie deal, with the team that drafted them...a pretty decent subjective yardstick, as the extension is where the big money kicks in.

They took data from 1993 to 2022, and organized it, not by draft position per se, but by 1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc. QB taken in that draft.

1st QB:  57% extended.

2nd:  35%

3rd:  31%

4th:  14%

5th:  33% (but a tiny sample size, only 3)

Particularly with the 1st QB, that's also the #1 overall pick...19 of the 30 years under consideration.  The #1 slot's rookie deal is the highest;  Williams is getting close to $40M.  That puts more pressure to stay with the investment.  The #1 pick is also very likely to start immediately.  One of this 19 is Trevor Lawrence, who hasn't signed an extension *yet* but still could.  Of those 18?  12 signed their extensions...so 6 didn't.

So even for the #1 pick QBs...1/3 don't cut it.

It's even worse for the QB1's that weren't #1 picks...only 4 of 10 did, meaning they drop down pretty much to QB2.

To me, this shows the desperation around the NFL to get the QB...and that teams *commonly* overreach to try to get one.  The 14% for QB4 is another indicator.  There's only 7 such, but only 1 of 7 is a compelling stat even with such a small sample size.  On the other hand, it's plausible that QB4 and QB5 might be going to teams where they're NOT expected to play immediately...but the fact is, those teams still used a first round pick.

Amusing Fact of the Day:

Only two quarterbacks drafted by the Denver Broncos have ever won a playoff game with the team.

Gary Kubiak was part of seven playoff victories as a backup to John Elway.

The only Broncos-drafted quarterback to win a playoff game for Denver? That's right, Tim Tebow.

They'll probably do it in a few years too.  Not like they have any interest but making more money.

The logistics are a nightmare.  It's a 16 hour flight from LA to Melbourne, and I think there's nothing appreciably shorter.  This almost demands something like, say, play Sunday, bye week, play *Thursday*, fly back.  Tennis players routinely take several extra days in-country before the Aussie Open, and IIRC, the schedule's relatively light after that, because the travel is still a PITA.  Can also make comarisons to MLB's starting the season in Japan...but that would *seriously* disrupt preseason prep, to have to travel so far for NFL week 1.
