NFL 2024-25

Recommended Posts

So, the WR position market has now been completely reset, with Justin Jefferson getting a massive deal...larger than any non-QB.

Which makes another position where salaries have become insane.  Edge rusher and left tackle are also WAY up there.  I think there's a serious side effect:  dynasties may be close to dead.  Or at best, they'll last a handful of years now.  Because you simply can't pay everyone...not at the extreme levels so many positions are now seeing.  The NFL's cap is a lot harder than any other league's, particularly at certain points in the league year.

The main reason the Patriots dynasty lasted as long as it did was that one of the key players (Brady, natch) was willing to play below market value for much of his career.

On the other hand, a big part of the reason the Broncos have been basement-dwellers for the past couple of years—and will continue to be for the next couple of years—is because they spent so much on their next Quarterback Of The Future that they didn't/don't have much left for anyone else.

Part of the argument for the Seahawks' decline was they sank too much into the secondary...arguably, also for too long...and didn't have enough left over.  Especially after Wilson's rookie deal, which let them pay the Legion of Boom.

Can argue that Rodgers allowed regular-season success...but led in part to the post-season letdowns.  Despite winning 2 MVPs.

The Pats were also good at getting players to sign for less than the nominal market value for quite a while.  Brady was WAY less, but hey, 15% less on a number of your other big names, lets you share the wealth.  And from a personal financial standpoint?  What's the real difference between, let's say, 4 years for $40M, and 4 years for $32M...say, $20M guaranteed for both?  Oh...maybe a 3rd Maserati...or you get the 'regular' Cosmograph Daytona, not the tricked-out one.  I'm not sure that's repeatable today, tho;  NOT going for Every Dollar You Can was never common, but now I suspect it's pretty much DOA.

Vikings 4th round draft pick Khyree Jackson killed in a traffic accident when the car he was in, was struck by another car, which continued on to strike a third car.  The report says

Quote

“Investigators believe alcohol may have been a contributing circumstance in the crash.”

and the strong suggestion is, it's the driver that struck the other 2 cars.  2 others in the car with Jackson were also killed;  their car was forced off the road and hit multiple tree stumps.

Former Raven Jacoby Jones died Sunday, according to a report from the NFLPA.  Jones' most notable achievements...catching the game-winning bomb from Joe Flacco, to shock the Broncos at Mile High.  It was one of the worst defensive calls and/or blown coverages *ever*...one on one corner playing press coverage on the last play of the game.  He followed that up with a receiving and return TD in the Ravens' SB win.

Jones was........

40.

Cause of death has not been reported, but the tone of the stories I've seen has generally felt like...this wasn't a huge surprise.  Stroke, cardiac arrest, ruptured aorta...yeah, fine, all of those are entirely plausible...but generally they'd be a huge surprise.  So I'm mildly curious, but...if we never know?  It's none of our business.

It's a tragic loss for his family in any case.

Little factoid just dropped on SC.

The Jets have not made the playoffs since 2010.

The factoid is...

...they are the only such team in the NFL

...and the NBA

...and MLB

...and the NHL

YES...every team in all 4 major US pro sports has made the playoffs since 2010...I presume this includes the play-ins in the NBA and MLB...except the Jets.

MLB:  Tigers, Angels (2014)
NBA:  Hornets (2016);  Pistons, Spurs (2019)

NFL:  Broncos (SB 50), Panthers, Falcons (2017)...and no one else is more than 3.

NHL:  Sabres (2011).  Could be argued to be the same, just from season timing.  Red Wings are next (2016).

To be sure, SOME of this relates to the number of teams making the playoffs, and to the variability within each sport.  The NFL has only recently expanded the playoffs.  Same with MLB...but baseball's a far more random sport.  NHL and NBA have always had very large playoff fields.  (The percentage of players/teams that should advance has been a subject of academic discussion.  Too many, you devalue the regular season;  too few, you risk making the regular season too random, as single games may become too significant.  Best example of the latter, the 4 team CFP.  Suggested...somewhere between 25 and 40%.)

Still....nice nugget.

And hope it continues.  Any team putting up with Queen Aaron deserves it.

I'm watching the preseason Hall of Fame game because, well, it's on.

Having seen the new uniform set in action on the field, I have to say the new look for the Houston Texans is ... unfortunate. The blue looks like black—it looks more like black than Chicago's uniforms, actually. The red doesn't provide much contrast. And the horn-style shoulder stripes look like something straight out of the Arena League. On a scale of 1 to 10, I give this uniform set an F.

You do realize...there is such a thing as turning off the TV....

I'm looking at some stills, cuz I was watching baseball...nothing in life is less meaningful to me than an NFL first preseason game, especially this one...

I'm gonna say, you wrote Texans...but meant Bears unis?  Because the Texans' jerseys look like pretty classic navy blue.  The Bears pants do appear to be a couple shades darker...I'd still say navy, but it is definitely approaching a blue-black.  And the stripes *everywhere* are hideous, not just the shoulders.  They look like guide markers...cut here for even thickness.

Ahhh, my bad, didn't look closely enough at the caption.

Yeah, the bullhorns aren't great, and the red stripes...ugh.  My first thought s a bad slash across the black hide.  And yeah, those letters and pants are black, not dark blue. The red number outline...yeah it's hard to see but I'm not sure that's a bad thing.

I agree with Old Man, with the exception of those shoulders.  In the spirit of the Olympics, those are a fall.  1 point deduction.  8.8 for the overall execution.  Styling difficulty is low tho, so the overall score's just...meh.  They're definitely not a crime against sightedness, at least.
