When it is well written' date=' no. Unfortunately, LKH does not write sex scenes that appeal to me.[/quote']

For me, that's merely a guess. From what I've read, she writes like I did, back in middle school. I've read the sex scenes I wrote back then. That's quite enough to convince me I don't want to see how she writes them.

Danse Macabre by Laurell K Hamilton. A bit bloated to do 500 pages over a two day period but it is taking time for the character to realise what is going on and why.

And I think something is building in the background.

I read this series up to a book or 2 past Obsidian Butterfly. I thought the series had promise, but just got tired of the endless sex stuff. When Butterfly came out, it seemed more the type of story she seemed to start out to write (detective with supernatural powers, etc.), but as soon as Anita went back, back into bed with the Vamp/Werewolf/etc. she went. So I gave up.

Friends who liked the series gave up shortly thereafter, I believe. Part of it is that I read the first 7-8 books in rapid succession, not spaced out as they were written, and so the (what felt like) exponential rise in romance novel writing and the decrease in detective style writing was very apparent to me; whereas to them, it hadn't seemed as abrupt as it was.

I have to give her credit though, if you read the intro to book 1, she explains there that she doesn't know a lot about detective work, and therefore you shouldn't expect a lot.

I prefer Kim Harrisons Witch books or Dresden Files. Even the Sookie Stackhouse or Harper Connolly books seem better to me.

Death Masks by Jim Butcher. It's book 5 of the Dresden Files. I was drawn in by curiousity as I never got around to watching the series. I have to admit that the series does live up to the hype so far. It has that nice Film Nior Vibe that makes Detective Stories fun to read, and even though Fantasy isn't my first choice in genres, it meshes very well.

If/when the Dresden Files RPG comes out, I might be tempted to pick up a copy.

Don't expect too much from the TV show. It's marginally entertaining, but it doesn't capture the magic (excuse the pun) of the books.

The characters don't match the ones in my head. I thought it just might be me, but every Butcher fan I talked to has said the same thing.

As for the books, I'm planning on investing in cryogenics so I don't have to wait between releases.

Dresden Files is lightyears better than LKH's stuff.

Maybe that's why Sci-fi axed the series

Just reread Leigh Brackett's "Erik John Stark, Outlaw of Mars" I really love the old burroughslike solar system stories and hers are just about the best IMO. 9 out of 10 for me. Kind of Tarzan meets john Carter of Mars with some A.Merritt thrown in is the vibe I get.

Just finished China Miéville's Perdido Street Station. I see what the hype is about. The first 1/4 of the book was a bit slow, almost Gormenghast slow, though Miéville certainly is a master of descriptive, atmospheric writing. But once certain plot elements emerge, the book really takes off. This book would have rated a 10 except for the ending, which was a pointless failure. I'd give it an 8.9.

I recently finished reading Storm Front by Jim Butcher. It is the first novel of the Dresden Files. I got interested in it after watching the SciFi channel series. I enjoyed the book enough that I have aquired the next four in the series.

Right now I am reading Fox on the Rhine. It is an alternate history novel so I'm not really sure that qualifies as Fantasy/Sci-Fi. It is pretty good as alternate history goes. The main assumption is that the plot to assassinate Hitler works and the end of World War II takes a different turn because of it.

The Dresden Files is a very good series. Only one of the books has disappointed me thus far...and it really wasn't that bad. It was simply not as good as the others, IMO. Butcher redeemed himself in my eyes with the very next book and I have high hopes for 'Proven Guilty'.

I am enjoying Butcher's fantasy series (halfway throught the first book). The man is not a 'one-trick-pony' and is capable of successfully writing in two very different genres.

Well, over the last month, I read the entire run of the Dreseden Files, the Codex Alera and Academ's Fury by the same auhor. Also grabbed Off Armageddon Reef by David Webber. I read Songmaster by Orson Scott Card for my monthly book group.

If you like the Dresden Files, I suggest Something from the Night Side by Simon Green.

Just read David Gibbin's Atlantis. If I ever read another work by this author, it's because it's under duress. Cliché upon cliché, and a main character that just screams Mary Sue. But I finished it, because the premise was very intriguing.

Dzur by Steven Brust - I still love Vlad and enjoy Brust's dialogue, but as a whole the book left me flat. The plot was nothing special and the Deus Ex Machina at the end, while reasonably well done, was still an obvious Deus Ex Machina.

Mistral’s Kiss by Laurel K. Hamilton – No disappointment here, because I was expecting boring straight porn featuring an uber wench getting at least three new powers in a mildly interesting plot. About the only thing wearing thin for me is the last three books or so of the Merry Gentry series covered like a total of 50 hours, tops.

"The Nomad Queen" James Gordon White. Average "Sword and Sorcery" fare. First of a series but I don't have the sequel and I didn't think enough of it to bother to try tracking it down Just starting "Some Things Never Die" by Robert Morgan; the second of his "Teddy London" supernatural PI novels.
