The entire reason he set up the confrontation was he had run out of time and the charm hiding Morgan was about to end. When that happened he would have the entire council in his livingroom. Both. A must read for anyone running Terran Empire, but overall I wasn't impressed. Part of it was due to the "science marches on" effect in which certain elements seem so dated (the use of microreader 'tapes', everyone smokes, no women in the space navy, and so on) the rest was due to (IMO) disjointed action scenes that didn't quite make sense. Written in 79 and refreshing read. Sometimes I like a plain good yarn without the writer trying to impress everyone with his knowledge in this or that field. Also finished Turn Coat. The usual alternate history of important figures bringing us to a crisis set in Southern California with a road trip excursion. Having hit Las Vegas, Long Beach and San Francisco in previous books, Palm Springs was probably an inevitable choice. Powers returns to his private life for the first time since Anubis Gates to give us a sessional college literature instructor co-protagonist. He's not done with spies, so a semi-sympathetic Mossad team helps out in a battle against against another conspiracy that achieves new depths of evil in the Powerverse by aiming to control nothing less than time travel, and with it gaining the power to banish all the redemptive guilt that drives a good Powers protagonist. Finished up Eye of the World this morning. The first book of the final three will be coming out in November of this year and I want to brush up on the details. I think, with all my previous work on a HERO conversion of the setting, folks will guess that my review of the book will be generally positive. I will say that if Mr. Rigney (Robert Jordan) had maintained pacing similar to this very first book, there might have been fewer naysayers and Wheel of Time haters. This is the fourth or fifth time I have read the book and I was able to see it in a different light. I remember the first time, I was caught by the creative prose in the opening of the first chapter. The way the wind was described as almost hostile. It sort of dawned on me (though it was probably always there) that wind plays a pretty significant role as metaphor in the series. There is more, but I would have to start a new thread to get into all the details. Suffice to say, I had as much fun reading EotW this time as any of the previous times.
